acitizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Oileans and State of Louisiana, have invented "invention is the provision of a ,rail joint which may be re ed and which, when in assembled position, serves to clamp the rails in a peculiar vise-like manner.
The foregoing and other objects'of the invention will hereinafter be more-fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicatecorresponding parts in all'theviews, and in which i F igure 1 is a transverse section of arailwa -rail showing in elevation a preferred embodiment of-this invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3 ,is a transverse section of a modification of the invention taken on'a line corresponding to the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig 4: is a similar-view of a further modification on ,a line corresponding to the line 4--i of Fig.

Having particular reference to Fig. 1, it
will be noted that this invention comprises a pair of bars 10 and 11, each-adapted to embrace, by wed ing act-ion, a slde of a rail- R, and each incliiding a base plate extending beneath the base flange 12 of the rail.

The space 23 may be maintained between said p ates by any suitable positive ll'lttlllS such, for instance, as loose washers 24 and lugs '25 formed on either of the base plates and extending into contact with the other.
As. shown in Fig. 1, I provide the base pla'te'21 with an integral lug or rib 25 exouter portion of the heel extension 16 of the i bar 10. If. desired, however, the washers and lugs may be omitted, allowing the plates 17 and 21 to engage each other, the neck 22 being made short enough for this'purpose.
The base plate 21 is preferably extended laterally along both of its edges so as to pro: vide flanges 26' tl1rough which any suitable type of fasteners may be driven or passed in order to secure the structure to the cross ties (not shown), these flanges being provided with vertical holes 26 for this pui' ose. The horizontal extensions 16 and 19 o the bars are provided with rows of vertical holes 27, and the portions of the base plates 17 holes 17 and 21', respectively, in vertical alinementwith the holes 27. Through these Several sets of alined vertical holes are passed any suitable form of clamping members, such as bolts 28 or screws 28' for the purpose of drawing those portions of -thejoint members which have engagement with the rail into close gripping cont-act therewith. 'The vertical portions of the bars 10 and 11 are also provided with bolts 29 which extend rail for the purpose of binding these parts in the positions indicated. It will be observed, therefore,that the fastening devices cooperate with parts of the rail joint which are so spaced as to rovide a peculiar viselike clamping effect y reason of the spaces referred to.
