STOCKING.

JULIA mama FOSTER, or ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIA R. FOSTER, a citizen of .the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of. Fulton, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stockings, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in stockings, and more par ticularly to stockings which are provided with devices for preventing the raveling or running of broken stitches.
An object of the invention is to provide means which encircles the stocking at a point adjacent the welt at the top of the stocking, which means ties together the loops in the knitted stocking and also binds said loops against the face of the fabric strip, so that when a thread or yarn is broken at a point above said non-raveling protecting strip, the
loops below said strip will be held from raveling through the locking or binding together of the loops by said protecting strip.
In the drawings, which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention, Figure I is a diagrammatic view of a stocking having my improved non-raveling strip applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view, with parts of the stocking broken away to showthe protecting strip; Fig. 3 is also, an enlarged sectional view showing the strip and the stitches for securing the same to-the body portion of the stocking; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal view along one of the lines of stitching.
The stocking l is a knit stocking of the usual construction, and is preferably formed with a welt'at the topwhich is secured to the body of the stocking at the line 2. Secured to and encircling the stocking is a strip of fabric 3, which is preferably formed with selvage edges, and said strip'is secured to the stocking by a line of stitchingt passed through the strip and the stocking adjacent the upper edge of the strip and a line of stitching 5 passed through the strip and stocking adjacent the lower edge of the strip.
' This strip of fabric is preferably nonelastic. The stitches passing through the strip and the stocking will encircle theloop's forming the Wales in the stocking. Each stitch may encircle the loop in a single wale or may encircle the loops in a plurality of wales, theessential feature being-that a loop Specification bf Letters Patent.

in each Wale shall be encircled by the stitches so that all the loops in a course are secured.
The stitches encircling the loops tie the loops together, and also clamp or bind the loops against the face of the strip of fabric.
It is well understood that when a thread or yarn in a knitted stocking is broken, cerof courses, which results in a raveling or running of the released loops to a greater or less extent through the entire length of the stocking. In my device, if the yarn or thread is broken at a'point above the fabric strip 3, the loops in the succeeding courses will be released from being interlocked by the thread loops in the above courses. As
soon, however, as the loops in the courses bound or clamped to the strip 3, are released by the breaking of the thread above the strip, these loops which are clamped to the face of the strip will not release any of the loops below the strip, as they stay in loop form locked and held by the lines of stitching 4' and 5, which clamp or bind said loops against the face of the fabric. It will thus be seen that my non-raveling strip prevents 1 the running or raveling of the released loops to a point in the stocking below said strip.
I am aware that prior to my invention,
lines of stitching have been placed in a stocking for binding together the loops for preventing raveling. These lines of stitching depend entirely upon the looking or binding of one loop to another. In my improved device I do not depend solely upon the binding of the loops together by the stitches inserted therein, but said loops are also clamped against the face of the fabric strip by the lines of stitching, and, there fore, I am able by my device to much more effectively hold the released loops and prevent further raveling or running of the released loops.
While I have shown my fabric strip as secured to the inner face of the stocking, it Will be obvious that said strip may also be secured to the outer face of the stocking if desired. Said strip may be attached to the stockingeither at a point above the knee, or at a point below the knee, the essential feature being that said strip shall be attached to the stocking at a point below where the garter clasp is secured to the stocking, as the breaking of the threadsor yarn forming the stocking is most often caused by the garter fastening. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a knitted stocking 4 having the usual Welt at its top, of a nonraVeIing protection therefor comprising a strip of fabric of substantially the same width throughout and encircling said stocking below and adjacent the Welt, and a line of 15 1 In testimony whereof, I aflix my signa- 20 ture, in the presence of two Witnesses.
