To all 1072 one it may concern Be it known that I, WILHELM ENDLEIN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Elberfeld, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spanners or Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spanners or wrenches, and has for its object to provide a spanner having cooperating jaws located at each end and simultaneously adjustable relatively to each other to concurrently accommodate nuts or bolt heads of different dimensions.
My invention will be fully described hereinafter, and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings in which Figure 1 is a face view of my improved spanner with parts broken away; Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof; Fig. 3 is a cross-section thereof on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 1 is a face view of a slightly different form of my improvement.
In the drawings, both forms of my improved spanner or wrench comprise a main section 5 having members 6 and 7 spaced apart and maintained in spaced relation either by means of spacing blocks 8 secured in position by means of rivets 9 as shown in Fig. 1 or by means of integral walls 8 as shown in Fig. 4, the blocks 8 or the walls 8 whichever may be utilized being located at each end and at opposite edges as illustrated best in Figs. 1 and 4. An auxiliary section 10 is slidably mounted between the members 6 and 7 of the main section 5 and projects beyond the same at opposite ends, said auxiliary section being provided at each end with gripping surfaces 11 and 11 which cooperate with similar gripping surfaces 12 and 12 formed at each end of said main section 5. In addition to the above, the main section and the auxiliary section are provided with surfaces 13 and 13 which extend respectively from the surfaces 12, 12 and 11 and 11 preferably at an angle thereto, and constitute therewith jaws adjustable to different degrees to accommodate nuts and bolt heads of different dimensions as will be more fully described hereinafter. tially parallel with each other and extend 1 instance the member 7 is provided with slots 11 and 14 located near each end and having a series of preferably oppositely facing notches l5 and 15" formed in one longitudinal edge, and which may vary in number to meet the requirements of individual cases as shown in Figs. 1 and 1 and which in any event correspond in number, size and arrangement in each pair of slots in the same The longitudinal direction of these slots is always such as to extend substantially at right angles to the surfaces 11, 11 and 12 and 12, so that in Fig. 1 said slots extend substantially parallel to the axis of the wrench while in Fig. 4 the corresponding slots are inclined relatively to said axis. Pins 16 and 16 are located on the auxiliary section 10 in such a manner as to extend into the slots 14 and 146 said pins being adapted to cooperate with said notches 15 and 15 to secure the sections 5 and 10 in an adjusted position and against relative movement in a lengthwise direction. In order that said pins 16 and 16' may be maintained in the notches 15 and 15 against accidental re moval, I preferably provide springs 17 which have one end in engagement with opposite edges of said auxiliary section 10 and 1311611 other ends seat-ed against the inner surfaces of the spacing blocks 8 or integral walls 8 and as shown, comprise leaf springs secured upon pins 17 a extending between the members 6 and 7 of the main section 5. These springs 17 or their equivalents exert a pressure tending to move said pins 16 and 16 into the notches 15 and 15 and consequently prevent accidental removal of said pins from said notches and yet permit such removal when the same is desired for the purpose of adjusting the jaws.
When it is desired to adjust the jaws all that is necessary is to press the auxiliary section 10 relatively to the main section 5 transversely in opposite directions at each end and transversely rock the sections relatively to each other against the tension of the springs 17 until the pins 16 and 16 have been moved out of the notches 15 and 15 of the cotiperating slots 1 1 and 14 As soon as this has been accomplished, the auxiliary section 10 may be moved lengthwise of the main section which movement will cause the surfaces 11 and 12 to approach each other and the surfaces 11 and 12 'to move away from each other, or vice-versa, according to the direction in which said auxiliary section is actuated, the pins 16 and 16 meanwhile moving lengthwise of the slots 1 1 and 141. As soon as the desired adjustment has been secured, transverse pressure is removed from said auxiliary section whereupon the springs 17 will immediately return said pins 16 and 16 to a notch and 15 and consequently again lock said main section 5 and auxiliary section 10 against lengthwise movement relatively to each other. It will be seen that with the above operation the jaws at each end of the spanner or wrench are simultaneously adjusted. In the preferred form of my im- -provement, the notches 15 and 15 in the slots 14: and 1 1 and the coperating pins 16 and 16 are so positioned relatively to each other and to the respective jaws that the distance between the surfaces 11 and 12 will differ from the distance between the surfaces 11 and 12 each time an adjustment is had. Thus when the parts are in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4 the surfaces 11 and 12* will be as close together as they can get in the particular implement while the surfaces 11 and 12 will be separated to a maximum extent. If the pins 16 and 16 are now transferred to the next adjacent notches 15 and 15 it will be found that the surfaces 11 and 12 have approached each other, while the surfaces 11 and 12 have been moved apart. In either of the adjustments so far described, as well as in any others which may be had in any particular implement, the jaws at one end will always be set to accommodate a nut or bolt head of different size from that for which the jaws at the opposite end will be set. This adjustability of the respective jaws may be in any predetermined ratio, the illustration in Fig. 1 showing a spanner capable of being adj usted to fit six different nuts each varying of an inch in size from that of the others. In Fig. 1 the spanner is shown as capable of being adjusted to fit seven different nuts or bolt heads each being of dififerent size than the others. Thus for instance if it is desired to span a inch nut, the auxiliary section 10 is moved and the pin 16 is positioned in the center notch 15*, the pin 16 bein at the same time located in the center notch 15. WVith the parts in this position, the surfaces 11 and 12 will be properly positioned to accurately span a nut commonly known as a 1} inch nut or a bolt head of corresponding size, while at the same time, the surfaces 11 and 12 will be set to accommodate a nut known as a inch nut or a bolt head of corresponding size. In order to facilitate the adjustment I may provide indicating characters adjacent to the various notches, the characters in the illustrations being such as to indicate the size of nut which the jaws will span when the pins 16 or 16 are in position in the various notches. Thus in the form shown in Fig. 1 the notches 15 are marked respectively 1 g and while the notches 15 are marked g, and t, indicating that nuts known by the six different sizes may be accommodated. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a different arrangement is illustrated, that is, three of the four notches 15 are marked respectively 5%, and while the four notches 15 are marked respec tively 9;, s, and a, indicating that the jaws may be adjusted to accommodate these seven different sizes of nuts or bolt heads corresponding thereto. l/Vhen the pins 16 and 16 in this latter form are located respectively in the notch 15 marked 3- and the notch 15 which is unmarked, the surfaces 11 and 12 will be approximately in engagement with each other, which is the reason for not marking the one notch 15 It is, of course, to be understood that any variety of adjustments suitable for any particular purpose may be substituted for those shown and described.
It will be seen that my improvement provides a double jawed spanner or wrench in which both sets of jaws are simultaneously adjusted to each other to accommodate a different nut or bolt head, and that this adjustment may be eifected by simply first pressing the auxiliary section 10 transversely of main section 5 against the tension of the springs 17 and then sliding said auxiliary section 10 relatively to the main section 5 until the desired adjustment at one end or the other has been had. The two sections 5 and 10 are automatically locked together the moment transverse pressure on said section 10 is removed owing to the fact that the mo ment this occurs the springs 17 will return the pins 16 and 16 to one or the other of the notches 15 and 15*.
Various changes in the specific forms shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim: a
1. A spanner or wrench comprising two adjustable sections, a jaw carried by one section, a converse jaw carried by the other section, one of said sections being provided with two series of inclosed notches, and projections on the other section adapted to cooperate with each series of notches to lock said sections in an adjusted position, said sections being movable transversely of each other to disengage said projections and notches.
2. A spanner or wrench comprising two adjustable sections, a jaw carried by one of said sections, a converse jaw carried by the other section, one of said sections being provided with two series of inclosed notches facing in opposite directions and projections on the other section adapted to cooperate with each series of notches to lock said sections in an adjusted position, said sections being capable of a rocking movement transversely of each other, whereby said projections and notches are disengaged.
3. A spanner or wrench comprising two adjustable sections, a jaw carried by one of said sections, a converse jaw carried by the other section, one of said sections being provided with two series of inclosed notches facing in opposite directions and projections on the other section adapted to cooperate with each series of notches to lock said sections in an adjusted position, said sections being capable of a rocking movement transversely of each other whereby said projections and notches are disengaged and resilient means for maintaining said projections in said notches.
4:- A spanner or wrench comprising one section having parallel members spaced from each other, a second section slidably mounted between said parallel spaced members, cooperating jaws at each end of said sections adjustable relatively to each other as the sections are moved and a plurality of means for locking said sections against relative movement, said sections being capable of a rocking movement transversely of each other whereby said locking means are engaged and disengaged, said locking means being so positioned relatively to each other as to secure predetermined adjustments of each set of jaws differing at each end each time said sections are relatively moved.
5. A spanner or wrench comprising two sections slidable relatively to each other and also movable transversely to each other, cooperating jaws at each end of said sections adjustable relatively to each other as the sections are slidably moved, one of said sections being provided with a series of notches near each end, pins on the other section adapted to cooperate with each series of notches to prevent a sliding movement between said sections, said series of notches and pins being engaged with and disengaged from each other by the transverse movement of said sections and being so positioned relatively to each other as to secure predetermined adjustments of each set of jaws differing at each end, each time the sections are moved, and springs arranged to maintain said pins in said notches to permit said transverse movement of said sections.
6. A spanner or wrench comprising two sections movable relatively to each other, cooperating jaws at each end of said sections adjustable relatively to each other, as the sections are moved, one of said sections being provided with a series of inclosed notches near each end, pins on the other section arranged to cooperate with said notches to maintain said jaws in their adjusted positions, the cooperating notches and pin at one end being positioned relatively to the cooperating notches and pin at the other end in such a manner as to secure predetermined adjustments of said jaws differing at each end each time said sections are relatively moved and forming semi-hexagonal spaces adapted to fit upon nuts or bolt heads of different standard sizes.
7. A spanner or wrench comprising two sections movable relatively to each other, cooperating jaws at each end of said sections adjustable relatively to each other as the sections are moved, one of said sections being provided with a series of inclosed notches near each end and facing in opposite directions, pins on the other section arranged to cooperate with said notches to maintain said jaws in their adjusted positions, the cooperating notches and pin at one end being positioned relatively to the cooperating notches and pin at the other end in such a manner as to secure predetermined adjustments of said jaws diflering at each end each time said sections are relatively moved and forming semi-hexagonal spaces adapted to fit upon nuts or bolt heads of different standard sizes.
