LEONARD B. WILSON, F BELLEVUE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COLLAPSIBLE CARTON 0R BOX.
`Application led December 15, 1911.
To all whom, 'it may (fonce/v1] Be it known that I, LEONARD B. WILSON, of Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Cartons or Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide a new and improved collapsible carton or box particularly designed for use in the transportation of eggs.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a box or device of the character described having a plurality of yielding or resilient lcells or compartments each having a raised inclined bottom portion.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates an application of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a collapsible carton or box constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a cross sectional view; Fig. 3, a cross sectional view showing the position of the parts when the box is collapsed; Fig. 4, a blank from which the carton or box is made; and Fig.- 5, a side view of a separable strip employed in connection therewith.
As illustrated and as preferred, the collapsible carton or box constituting my invention comprises a vertical front Wall 1 and a corresponding rear wall 2, each of said walls being formed with slots 3. In addition to the front and rear walls, I pro# vide a centrally disposed and longitudinally extending double-walled partition 4, which partition is connected with the respective front and rear walls by raised inclined bottoln portions 5 and G.. Said bottom portions 5 and 6 are provided with a series of slots 7, and the partition 4 with a series of slots 8, the latter constituting a continuation of the slots 7 of the respective inclined bottom portions 5 and 6.
9' and 10 designate cover portions respectively projecting fro-m the upper edge of the front and rear walls of the box.
Entered in the slots of the members above described, and extending transversely of the box, I provide a series of strips 11, said strips 11 being provided with engaging heads 12 adapted to engage the front and rear walls, as particularly shown by Fig. 2.
IVhen the parts are assembled, as shown by Fig. 1, that is to say, in operative posi- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion ready to receive the eggs or other articles to be packed, the structure comprises a plurality of yielding compartments or cells each having a raised inclined or 'sloping bottom portion on which the eggs rest. The construction also provides two supporting edges on which the box is adapted to rest, z'. e., the'edges formed by the juncture o-f therespective front and rear walls with the inclined bottom portions.
It will be noted that the construction is of such a character that it may be readily col' lapsed into the position shown by Fig. 3.
The front and rear walls, together with the intermediate double-walled partition, the sloping bottom portions and the cover portions are formed from a single piece of suitable material, such as cardboard. The blank from which the box is formed is particularly shown by Fig. 4, and in addition to the slots above referred to, is formed with a series of parallel score lines af-a, 5 5, c-c, and d along which the piece is folded to form the members above set forth.
What I claim is:
.1. A collapsible carton or box comprising front and rear walls, a vertical partition interposed therebetween having its lower edge disposed in a higher plane than the lower edge of said front and rear walls, a raised inclined bottom portion respectively connecting said partition with said walls, and appropriate end members, substantially as set forth.
2. A collapsible carton or box comprising front and rear walls formed with slots, an intermediate partition also provided with slots and formed of two vertical adjacent vwalls, inclined bottom portions connecting the respective walls of said partition with said front and rear walls, and a series of transversely extending strips entered in said slots, substantially as set forth.
3. A collapsible carton or box comprising front and rear walls formed with slots, an intermediate partition also provided with slots and formed of two vertical adjacent walls connected at the top, slotted bottom portions connecting the respective walls of said partition with said front and rear walls, and a series of transversely extending strips entered in said slots, substantially as set forth. 4. A collapsible carton or box being substantially rectangular in cross section comranged to limit the lateral displacement of 10 prising a front and a rear Wall, a centrally said Wa1ls,substantially as set forth. arranged vertical partition of less height In testimony whereof I afix my signature than said Walls formed integral therewith in presence ofjwo Witnesses.
