SANITARY DRINKING MECHANISM.
aCitizen'of-the United States, 'residing' at Chicago, in the county of Cook' and State` of Illinois, have-invented certain'new and 'useful Improvements in Sanitary Drinking Mechanism and f I `-following lto be a full, clear, and exact de'- sc ription ofthe same, reference being had .to .the accompanying drawings, forming part'of this specification, and'to the ligures and letters. of reference marked thereon.
.The object'of the' present invention is to provide a means whereby sanitary drinking in rural school house-yards, etc.
fountainsmay be practically combined and used in connection with an ordinary pump and domestic lwell such as are commonly found in rural districts, the invention being more -especially vadapted for -use where numbers of `persons are in the habit of drinking at the pump orwell,
for instance,
The advantages of, and,`in fact at this day, almost necessary for employing sani tary drinking fountains, are well` re'cog nized, and in many of the States of the Union lawshave been enacted forbidding the use of common drinking cups for general public use, either .at school houses or elsewhere, thus requiring individuals. to carry their own drinking cups or that means shall be provided whereby the general' public may drink without liability of spreading communicable diseases.'4 The sanitary drinking fountain 'has practically solved the 'roblem wherevera pressure system of drin (ing water has been installed, but up .to this time .no solution ofthe difficulty has beenoffered where the drinking water is derivedv from an ordinary well by means of the usual pump for raising water from the well.
In accordance Withvthe present invention provision is made whereby the pump may be utilized to force the waterinto a small pressure tank against a head of compressed air, and the pressure thus created is utilized to force the water vertically from the nozzle or bubbling l-valve of the drinking cup, the
discharge of water, being, however, controlled by a suitable self-closing valve, whereby the supply is conserved.
Referring' to the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is an elevation of a pump and sanitary fountain' 'mechanism embody- Speeicaton oi: Letters Patent. Application filed OctoberA 19, 1911.
.do hereby declare' the ing the present improvements, tl-iewellebe ing shown diagrammatically as *though yin section; vand Fig. 2 is a detail sect-ion on an enlarged scale of a preferred-form of selfclosing valve for controlling' thedischarge of water from the tank ,throughitliebubbling valve of the fountain.. f`
In said drawings the letter'rA.v .indicates a-force pump,of ordinaryconst-ruction hav-4 -ing a vaived discharge spoutB and a 'de,
'pending wellpipe, or tube'C with-the'gusual cylinder C containing a,l pistonadapted'to be Operated by the pump handle A fon-*lifting the water from the well and discharging it through the spout lB.l In accordancewith l`the presentI invention thereishungv at'one side of the well pipe C and.preferably-ion brackets D avertically arranged tank E. a capacityT ycommensurate The tank E has with the. demands to be made uponf the apf paratus, and at the bottomit'is connected through al pipe F with the'well pipe fC at apo-int above the cylinder CCI-'Inthespipe F there is included a cheekV valve-indicated at I+" whereby water vforced lfrom the through the pipe F into the bottom of the tank E is held against ,reverse'movement, or, in other words, it will be forced into and held by the tank E against the air pressure therein., From the bottom of thev tank E, a pipe; G leads up through the well 4platform H and terminates in a bubbling valveor cup I, preferably located in the usual basin K which serves to carry olf the waste. In the pipe G there 4is interposed a self-closing` valve L, and inasmuch as in the present device it is desirable .that no water should be allowed to stand in any pipe or part exposed above the'platform where it may freeze, the'valve L is located at the '-loxer end or portion ofthe pipe G, and in ad ition to controlling the flow of water from the tank E to the cup or bubbling valve I, it is provided with a drip opening Z', through whichthe discharge end of the pipe G will be emptied when the valvel L is closed. 'For operating the, valve L a long valve stem M extendsup above the platform H and into convenient position for being operated in the ordinary Way, the said valve is preferably invariably of the self-closing type and is shown Awitha closing spring L in Fig. 2.
The tank'E is at the upper end provided With a removable plug e and at its lower bubbling valve or jet by any one who desires p to obtain a drink.
denite relation to each other inthe brackleiiectually discharge, practically all of the,
screws or other ordinary fastening means.
end with a drain cock e, whereby it may! be einptied and air admitted at the upper i end, this being a convenient provision for i insuring the sufficient body of air 'Within the ltank to give the desiredlpressure and 'to Water from .the tank before requiring the pump to be operated to supply more Water.
ln operation it is obvious that by closing the spout B of the pump and operating the handle A Water Will be forced into the tank E, thereby compressing .the air in the tank, and that by the manipulation of* the valve L, the vfat-er may be drawn off through the The Whole. apparatus is of sueh formand construction that it may be readily installed in connection with. an ordinary pump and it is preferably sev arranged that the tank E, together with the lower portieno the pipe4 G and valve-stein M are all mounted in a ets l) and the brackets D are provided with eyes d through which thevvell pipe C may be passed and the Whole supported by col lars cZ secured to the Well pipe@ by set -laving thus deseribedmy invention .what l elaiin as new and desire to seeureby Letters Patent of the United States,'is:
1. In an apparatus suh as described7 the combination Witha force pump having a depending Well pipe, laterally extending brackets on said Well pipe, a pressure tank 2. n an apparatus such as described, the
einbination with. a 'force puinp having a depending ivell pipe,` a bracket connected with said Well pipe, a pressure tank inountf ed on the bracket and at its lovver end in eoinniuiueatlon with the Well pipe, a check valve interposed between the Well pipe and tank, a discharge pipe leading .from the lower end of the tank toa point above the' tank, a bubbling cup atthe upper end, said discharge pipe, a valve controlling said discharge pipe and having means in proximity tothe bubbling cup whereby it may be opened, a drain cock at the bottoni of the tank, an airinlet opening at the top ot the tank, and means whereby said air inlet opening may be closed, substantially as described.
