ter-sunlr in said concaved faces, as clearly shown in the drawings, while the nuts 21 are engaged with the shanks of said bolts on the outer faces of said spring arms to secure said strips 19 in position thereon.
. In practice, to apply this device to use, the car is raised and supported by a jack, so that the weight of the car no longer rests upon the journal, and the packing is then removed from the packing box. Assuming that the parts of my improved device are all set up, the arms 14 with the emery grinding strips thereon are adjusted over the collar 3 and the journal. The structure of the device is such that the arms will spring tightly about said journal and the concaved inner faces 22 of the strips 19 will fit snugly thereon. The outwardly loo ed portions 15 of the arms 14 are, obvious provided for the reception of the collar 3 on the axle and a beveled recess is provided in the outer end of the axle at a central point thereon to receive the conical end 11 of the main drive shaft 9. Power is then applied to said drive shaft through any desired means (not shown), which will, obviously, cause the head piece, formed by the disks, and the spring arms with the grinding strips thereon. td be rotated on the end of the axle. This rotation of the device will, obviously, grind and polish the journal to the desired extent. Of course, it will be understood that, although emery strips are described and shown in connection with the spring arms 14, strips of other material, or in fact, other separate devices, may be applied to said arms forgrinding and polishing purposes.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects .of the invention and while It have particw larly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is chvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of c0nstruction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a disl'rflikehead piece having a plurality of radial channels therein, a plurality of angular spring arms having portions thereof disposed in the channels of said head piece, means to secure the last mentioned portions of said angular arms in the head piece, a plurality of grinding strips secured to the inner faces of said spring arms, and supporting and driving means for said head piece.
2. A device of the class described comprising a disk-like head piece having a plurality of radial channels therein, a p1u-' rality of arms looped and bent laterally at their ends to formshanks thereon, said shanks being disposed in the radial channels of said head piece, means to secure the shanks of said arms in the head piece, the arms proper projecting from said head piece being adapted for springing movement with respect thereto, a plurality of grinding strips removabl secured to the inner faces of said projecting spring arms, the inner faces of said strips being concaved for engagement with a curved surface, and a drive shaft removahly engaged with the central portion of said head piece.
3. A device of the class described com-. prising a head piece composed of a trio of disks suitably secured together, the central of said disks being provided with a plurality of radial slots to provide channels in said head piece, a plurality of angular spring arms having one of the bent portions thereof disposed in the channels of said head piece, means extending through one of the disks of said head piece and adapted for engagement with the last mentioned portions of the arms to secure the latter to said head piece, grinding strips removably secured to the inner faces ot the projecting portions of said spring arms, the inner faces of said grinding strips being concaved for engagement with a curved sur face, and supporting and driving means for said head piece.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ai'li'x. my
signature in the presence of two witnesses.
