HAT-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 28, 1911.
Patented J an. 6, 1914:-
Serial No. 662,833.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARION LOUISE BAG- LnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in hat-pins and particularly to improvements in lock hat-pins of the type shown and described in the patent granted me April 11, 1911, No. 989,223; and an object of this invention is to simplify and to cheapen the construction of such lock hat-pins and to increase the readiness and convenience with which the parts of the hat-pin may be engaged with and disengaged from each other.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of this invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure 1 is an elevation of my new hat-pin, the lock-head being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line A-A of Fig. 1.
The shank a at one end is provided with a suitable head I) and at its other end is formed with a pair of branches 0 which meet in a sharp point (Z. The branches 0 are resilient and may be readily pressed inwardly toward each other, as is shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. Each branch 0 is formed near its middle with an inset, notch or indent e. In the inner wall of the circular opening or mouth of the sheath or lockhead f, there is seated (Fig. 2) a circular bead or locking ring g, which is adapted to enter the insets e. The lock-head f is further provided with a cup-shaped seat h which serves to position the hat-pin and to arrest and limit its inward movement so that the locking ring 9 will readily engage in the insets e 1n the branches 0. The cupshaped seat It also serves to grip the branches 0 of the hat-pin and thereby to aid in retaining the latter frictionally in the lock-head 7.
I claim:
1. The combination of a hat-pin the penetrating end of which is formed with a pair of resilient outwardly curved branches which diverge from the shank of the hat-pin and then converge and meet in a sharp point, each of said branches being formed with an inset; a sheath having a flaring mouth at the base and in the inner wall of which is seated a circular bead-like ring adapted to engage with said insets to lock said branches 1n place; and an independent funnel-like seat which extends within said sheath inwardly from said ring and is shaped and arranged to engage frictionally said branches and arrest the same automatically in looking position; said branches lying in their locked position partly outside of said sheath.
2. In combination, a hat pin split longitudinally near its pointed end, the sides of said split portion being separated and resilient and formed on their outer surfaces with transverse notches or depressions, and a shell adapted to receive the point of the hat-pin, the inner surface of which shell is formed with a recess, and a ring secured in said recessed portion in a plane transverse to the shell, the inner edge of said ring being adapted to enter said notches when the pin is passed through the ring.
3. In combination, a hat pin split longitudinally near its pointed end, the sides of said split portion being separated and resilient and formed on their outer surfaces with transverse notches or depressions, and a shell adapted to receive the point of the hat pin, the inner surface of which shell is formed with a recess, and a ring secured in said recessed portion in a plane transverse to the shell, the inner edge of said ring being adapted to enter said notches when the pin is passed through the ring, said shell having a flaring mouth forming a guide for the pin.
Signed at Alameda, California, this 20th day of November in the presence of the two undersigned witnesses.
MARION L. BAGLEY.
