APPARATUS FOR FORMING AND PREPARING CHARGES FOR DYE-VATS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented aan. ci, rara.
Application filed February 28, 1910. Serial No. 546,415.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN T. PsAnsKr, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Forming and Preparing Charges for Dye- Vats, of which the following is a specification.
In operating dyeing machines generally, and particularly of the type set forth in my Patent No. 955,993, issued April 26, 1910', it is very difiicult to compact the material to be dyed, especially when such material is cotton, into the space which it is to assume in the dyeing machine, particularly where the operator wishes to utilize the entire capacity of the machine, so that the present invention has been devised for obviating this diiiiculty.
This invention, therefore, relates to improvements in appliances for use in connection with dyeing machines, and relates particularly to a device which is herein Atermed a filler for a dyeing machine and which is designed for the purpose of facilitating the packing of a large volume of material to be dyed so that it may be placed with great ease and facility in the dyeing machine.
More specifically the invention relates to a cylinder having mounted in the walls thereof and preferably near the bottom suitable temporary supports which are arranged to receive a bottom preferably the false bottom of the dyeing machine, such as shown in my copending application above referred to, and to hold the same in place in the cylinder so that the material to be dyed, in a loose condition, may be placed therein, and owing to the volume of the mass of material before it is compressed into the place which it would occupy in the dyeing machine, the cylinder is provided with a cover in the form of a weight which is adapted to be let down upon the material to compact the same into the proper shape and size to enter the dyeing machine. To facilitate the shrinkage of the mass or the compressing action, a suitable steam coil is arranged above the base which receives the cylinder and this steam coil is adapted to deliver steam to the underside of the false bottom and to permit the same to pass up through the material causing it to shrink rapidly as the weight descends. When the weight has caused the of construction hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l shows my device applied to a dyeing machine tank such as shown in my patent referred to; Fig. 2 shows the device after the material has been placed in the same; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the space occupied by the material after it has been compressed.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and construction of part-s may be employed so long as they possess the necessary characteristics, but I have shown in the drawings one embodiment which is very effective, and in that construction, l represents the tank of a dyeing machine which may be of any suitable construction, 2 represents the false bottom, 3 the distributing member, 4: the cover, and 5 the nut engaging the bolt 6 which is secured to said distributing member, the nut serving to hold the central distributing member tightly against the underside of the cover.
The device itself comprises a cylinder or casing 7 having a shoulder 8 at the lower end which is adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the tank, and a iange 9 which eX- tends inside of the tank in order to center the `filling device with respect to the tank. In the side wall of the cylinder there is an upper row of movable bolts l0 arranged annularly aro-und the cylinder and a lower row l1 at a short distance below the upper row. Each of these bolts is slidably mounted in the side of the cylinder so that they may be pushed in to extend beyond the inner wall or may be drawn out. The lower row of bolts supports the false bottom 2 and the upper row limits the upward movement of the false bottom so that when the central distributing member, the cover and the false bottom are lifted the filler cylinder will be lifted also. |Ihe flange 9 before and during the time when the cylinder is being filled occupies a recess l2 in a base 13, which supports a steam coil 14 connected to any suitable source of steam supply. A weight 15 in the form of a disk or plate is arranged to fit inside of the cylinder 7 and it is provided with a central opening 16 which receives the bolt 6 secured to the central distributing member 3. The weight is also provided with hooks for receiving chains which are connected to a hoist whereby the cover may be raised. Suitable eyes 17 are provided near the upper edge of the cylinder for receiving suitable hooks connected to a hoist so that the dev-ice may be raised from the dyeing machine, as will later appear.
ln operation the filler cylinder is mounted upon its base with the lower row ot bolts l1 pushed inward so that their ends project beyond the inner wall and support the false bottom while the bolts l() are also pushed inward to limit the upward movement of the false bottom, then the cotton, wool or other material is charged into the filler in the proper amount, and the weight 15 is put in place so that it rests upon the material. Steam is then admitted to the bottom of the tank formed by the tiller and its base,
and is permitted to pass up through the cotton, wool or other material and to cause what is termed a shrinkage so that the weight may compress the material about the central distributing member and into sub-- stantially the form shown in F ig. 3. rlhe weight is then removed and the cover for the dyeing machine is let down into the filler, and it any `further compression is necessary to cause it to engage the upper part ot the central distributing member, the nut 5 is drawn down until this is brought about, or the nut may be brought down until it engages the upper part of the cover. rlhe hoist is then applied to the bolt 6 and the entire mechanism, including false bottom, central distributing member7 cover and iiller, is removed and placed so that the flange 9 telescopes into the mouth of the dyeing inachine, it being obvious that the cylinder 7 will not slip down off of the mass by reason of the fact that the bolts lO engage above the false bottom. TNhen the parts are in place above the dyeing machine, then the operator removes both sets of bolts 10 and l1 and permits the false bottom, central distributing member, mass and the cover to slide down into the dyeing machine, when, after the parts are secured in place the dyeing machine is ready for operation.
Having described my invention, l claim :f
