Description

A. DUNBAR.
SNOW PLOW.
NO. 108,888. Patented 008. 18, 1870.
81W ZW ALEXANDER DUNBAR, OF NEW YORK, N'. Y.
Letters Patent No. 108,338, dated October 18, 1870.
IMPR'OVEMENT IN SNOW-PLOWS.
The Schednle referxed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all who'm 'it may cancer-n Be it known that I, ALEXANDER the city, county, and State of New York, have inrented a new and improved Snow- Plow;' and I do hereby declare that the following;r is a. fulll, clear, and exact description thereof, which willV enable others skilled in the art to make and use thc same, reference being had to the` aecompanying drawing ibrming'pait of this specification, in which- Fignre 1 represents a Vertical longitudinal section Vof my improved snow-plow. v' Figure 2' is a plan or top view of the same.
,Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new suowplow which will not be forced into the snow like a wedge to throw it aside, but will surround 'and gradually elevate und throw aside the column of snow to be (lis' placed.
The objection against the ordinary snow-plows now in use is that, besides bearing the entire weight and friction of the column to be displaced, they have also to press against and, to a great degree, overcome the pressure of' the snow which remains undisturbed.
By cutting into and surrounding the snow which is to be thrown aside the uunecessary friction is avoided, and more reliable action secnred.
A, in the drawing, represents the body of my improved snow-plow. It is made in form ofa box, supported. in a horizontal position by Wheels or rnnners. Its width is corresponding to the width of road to be opened, its height equal orl exceeding the depth of. snow, and its length suitable.
DUNBAR, of
The front end of the box is open, and the front edgesare sharp, to readily cut into the snow.
Toward the rear the'box is gradually elevated and bent to one side. As 'it is moved forward against the snow it'will surround the desired width of snow, and gradnally elcvate vthe same into 'the'rear portion, until finally the snow is disoharged through an opening in the side near the rear end `of the box.
In case the snow should' be so firm as to be displaced with great diificulty, a'screw, B, mouuted upon a shaft, F, may be em'ployed in the box, as shown, the slfaft being revolved by suitable machinery in rear of the apparatus.
A transverse shaft, D, having four, more or less, projecting bla-des, a a., may be hnng in front of the box, in case the fl'ont end of the same is enlarged, as shown.
The object of this shaft would be to feed the upper layer of snow downward, to prevent its passing over the plow to the back of the machine.
l-Iaving thus described my iuvent-ion,
I claim `as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the box A, constructed. as above specified, of the screw B O, and the wingcd beater D a, constructed and arranged as set forth.
The above specification of niy invention sigued by nie this 11th day of January, 1870.
