Babbitt metal to renew bearing surfaces,
and has forits object the provision of a device for molding Babbitt metal into the cross-heads of locomotives in order to renew the longitudinal bearing surfaces within the grooves after they have been wornI away by use.
An important object is to provide a de-` vice of this character which is adapted to be adjusted in order to accommodate the various elements of the device to the requirements of various shapes and sizes of locomotive cross-heads.
Other objects and advantages such as the features of cheapness, simplicity, eliciency, durability and the general improvement of the art will be carefully brought out hereinafter. Y
The common practice in this art heretofore has been to drive out the tapered blocks from the cross-head by means of a sledge hammer, and then to plane the surfaces of the grooves, thus necessitating a great degree of labor and causing the locomotive to be out of commission for an appreciable length of time. It is-to improve upon this laborious operation that Vthe present invention has been designed, the construction and operation of which are described in the following specitication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device partly in sect-ion showing a cross-head held therein, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the crosshead being removed, Fig. 4L is a horizontal section at the junction of the slidable members with the base, Fig. 5 is an end'elevation, the operating handle being removed, and Fig. 6 is a vert-ical sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral l designates a base which may be mounted upon any suitable support, and which is reinforced by ribs 2, extending longitudinally and transversely. The base `1 is provided adjacent its ends with slots 3 which communicate with wider slots l disposed thereunder to form retaining flanges 5.
Slidably mounted on the base l are spaced upright members designated as a whole by the numeral 6 which are provided upon their lower faces with tongues 7 which are disposed within the slots 3. Each of the members 6 comprises a horizontal plate 8 formed on, or rigidly connected with, a vertical plate 9, and side flanges 10. The inner opposing faces of the plates 9 are provided with grooves 11 for a purpose to be described. In order to support the members 6 firmly upon the base l, I preferably provide bolts 12 which are provided with elongated heads 13 disposed within the slots et and engaging the anges 5. The bolts 12 extend through the horizontal plates 8 and are then provided with clamping nuts 14:.
The members 6 may be moved longitudinally of the basel by means of cranks 15 secured upon screw-threaded rods 16 which pass through screw-threaded openings formed in brackets 17 bolted upon the base l, and which are provided upon their inner ends with disks 18 revolubly engaging recesses 19 formed adjacent the outer ends of the plates 8.
The plates 9 of the members 6 are provided with transverse slots 20 through which extend bolts 21 which engage the outermost pairs 22 of series of wedge members 22 and 23. The members 23 are provided with tongues 25 which are engaged by the grooves 11 formed on the plates 9, and are also provided upon their side edges with tongues 26` which engage grooves 27 formed in the members 22. It will be noted that the members 22 and 23 are wedgeshaped as shown to best advantage in Fig; 6.. The members 23 are provided upon their upper ends with screw-threaded openings 28 for the reception of eye bolts or other means for conveniently operating the members 23. It will be readily seen that when the members 23 are raised or lowered, the members 22 may be retracted or forced apart and still be retained in position in relation to the plates 9 by virtue of the bolts 21 and slots 20. The width to which the members 22 should be spread by means of the members 23 to suit the requirements of different cross-heads, is regulated as clearly shown in Fig. 3 by the employment of detachable U shaped bars 29 which abut against the inner faces of the wedge members and whose arms 30 straddle and are engaged vby the side edges of the members 22. llhe bars 29 are retained in their proper positions by means of the outward pressure on the arms 30 exerted by the wedging action.
Theside flanges 10 of the members 6 have secured therein bolts 31 which extend outwardly andpass through slots 32 formed in L shaped brackets 33. Nuts 34 are disposed upon the bolts 31 for clamping` the brackets 33 in adjusted positions. The laterally extending portions 35 of the brackets 83 are arovided with bolts 3G which are screwthreaded therein and which pass through slots 37 formed in plates 38. It will thus be seen by`reference to Fig. 3 that the plates 38 may be moved laterally by virtue of the bolts and slots 36 and 37 and may be moved toward or from each other by virtue of the bolts and slots 31 and 32, respectively.
llhe base l is further provided at its center with an aperture 39 within which is adapted to seat the frusto conical end 40 of a screw 41 which is preferably tapered upwardly. Upon the screw 41 are disposed disks 42 which are provided with packing rings 43 and which are for a purpose to be described.
The operation of the device is as follows: The cross-head 44 is placed between the members 6 with its tubular portion 45 extending downward. llhe disks 42 are then moved upon the screw 4l so that they will engage the tapered inner surface of the portion 45 uniformly. Then by turning the cranks 15, the members Gare moved along until the forked arms 46 of the cross-head will straddle the members 22V Then the bars 29 of the proper size are placed in position and the members 23 pushed downward until the members 22 grip the arms of the bars 29 firmly. rlhe cross-head should be so adjusted that the lower ends of the arms 46 contact with the upper surfaces of the bars 29. The plates 38 should be moved inwardly until they abut against the edges of the members 22 after which the members 6 should be further moved until the plates Y 38 are in close Contact with the edges of the arms 46. The spaces 47 which are formed between the edges of the cross-liead and the wedge members may then be filled with molten Babbitt metal. l
The plates 38 and the bars 29 will prevent the metal from escaping though if necessary rubber or other similar material may be used in any or all of the ciacks.
By means of the various features of ad- Locals? justment it will be noted that lany size or shape of locomotive cross-head may be treated.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
l. A device of the character described comprising a base, vertical plates slidable longitudinally of said base, members carried on the inner faces of said plates and movable laterally thereon, wedges engaging and disposed between said members, and means for movin@ said vertical plates.
2. A device o the character described comprising a base, vertical plates slidable on said base, members supported by and laterally movable on said plates, wedges engaging` said members, and adjusting plates carried by said first named plates and movable thereon longitudinally and transversely of the axis of the base.
3. A device of the character described comprising a base, a vertical adjustable support extending upwardly from said base, vertical plates slidable longitudinally on said base, members carried by and movable laterally ofl said plates, wedges disposed be-` tween said members, brackets movable on said plates, and plates adjustably supported on said brackets.
4. A device of the character described comprising a base, a vertically adjustable support extending upwardly from said base, vertical members slidable on said base, means for moving said members, wedge members carried by and movable laterally on said vertical members, wedges disposed between said wedge members, and means for properly limiting the lateral movement of said wedge members. 5. A device of the character described comprising a base, a vertical support extending upwardly from said base, screwthreaded disks disposed on said support, vertical members movable `on said base, screw operated means for moving said members, and expansiblemembers mounted on the inner opposing faces of said vertical members, said expansible members comprising wedge members laterally movable on said vertical members, and wedges disposed between and coperating with said wedge members.
9. A device of the character described comprising a base, vertical members mounted upon said base and movable thereon longitudinally, and expansible members carried by said vertical members, said vertical members being adapted to embrace the sides of a cross-head, and said expansible members being adapted to be disposed within the grooves in the cross-head.
