FLAT-FOLDING BOX AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30,1913.
Application filed October 4, 1910. Serial No. 585,228.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUSTAV MAIER, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Schramberg, in the Kingdom of Nurttemberg, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flat-Folding Boxes and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to cardboard boxes, and consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention,Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box constructed in accordance with my improvement; Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a side View and a vertical section; Fig. 4 is a detail view illus trating a modified form of locking notch.
The main feature of this invention consists'in providing side and end flaps having interengaging devices. In the form herein illustrated, two side flaps are provided which fold inwardly parallel with the end flap, and lie behind the same, said side flaps having a fastening button or clip secured thereto which is engaged by a slot or flap of some character upon the end flap of the box.
As shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the box a is of the ordinary construction of folding boxes or cardboard boxes, and has on each side wall a laterally folded-in flap Z), which when the box is ready for use underlies the other side wall 0. For the purpose of connecting the corners, that is, said flap 6 with the wall 0, there is fixed to the flaps a rivet (5 having a large head or button 6 thereon. For the insertion of the rivet (Z notches f with a lateral introductory slit are provided in the side walls 0, into which the neck of the rivet (Z enters when the box end is raised up, and the notches f are then covered by the head 6 of the rivet, so that no turning down of the walls 0 is possible.
The notches f have a somewhat sunken position, so that during the raising up of the box a, the rivet (Z must be lifted over the projection g and drawn downward, thereby preventing any accidental loosening.
The notches may consist of slits it open laterally, see Fig. 4, which end in the notches z' and in which the shaft of a rivet 70 comes to rest when the box end is 'aised up. In this case the notch is placed so high up as to create a projection which prevents the accidental withdrawal of the rivet 7c. The loosening of the connection is effected by shifting the wall upward, over the side shaft, which will be facilitated in case of need by cutting away the edges Z of the flaps b, so that when the flaps are folded these edges Z will be above the bottom of the box, and thus give room for the box to yield when the box ends 0 are raised to disengage the connection. The projection may, of course, be inserted into the slit also without displacement of the notch z, or this latter may be given such a form as to prevent any accidental withdrawal of the rivet (Fig. 4).
I claim 1. A folding box made of a cut blank, the margins of which are bent to form sides, flaps on opposite edges of two of said box sides adapted to fold within the edges of the adjacent sides to form corners, and cooperating fastening means comprising a headed stud mounted 011 one of said members, and a locking notch in the other mem her the mouth of which is out of line with the stud when said members are brought together but engageable therewith by shifting said members in opposite directions, the stud being interlocked in and retained by said notch when the members are returned to normal position.
2. A folding box made of a cut blank, the margins of which are bent to form sides, flaps 011 the opposite edges of two of said box sides adapted to fold within the edges of the adjacent sides to form corners, and cooperating fastening means comprising a headed stud mounted on one of said members, and a locking notch in the other member having an offset stud engaging and locking seat at its inner end, the mouth of which notch is out of line with the stud when said members are brought together, but engageable therewith by shifting said members in opposite directions, the stud being interlocked in and retained by said notch when the members return to normal position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAV MAIER.
