MORTON COOPER, OF BAINBR-IDGE, NEW YORK.
VERMIN-KILLING POULTRY-PERCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1913.
Application filed September 20, 1912. Serial No. 721,512.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTON COOPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the village of Bainbridge, county of Chcnango, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vermin-Killing Poultry-Perches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to a hollow roost or perch for fowls and other roosting birds, and has for its object to provide a novel detail of construction of such roost or perch which adapt it by means of tin trays therein to contain a germicide for the extermination of lice, mites and other vermin that infest fowls and growing chickens, and, which also adapt it by means of metal disks to catch and subject such lice, mites and vermin to the action of the germicide contained in the trays.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts as hereinafter described and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the perch with the cover plate broken away to show the interior construction thereof. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the perch with the trays, 4t and 5, removed, showing the V shaped opening in part 2 and the perforations through part 1 of said perch. Fig. 3 represents the under side or lower face of part 1 of said perch showing the metal perforated disks, 666, pressed concentrically and closely fitting around the perforations, 333.
The perch as shown in Fig. 1 consists of two members or parts, a lower part, 2, formed from a rectangular piece of wood or other material by cutting a longitudinal V shaped groove in the upper face thereof, and an upper or cover part or member, 1, of the same length and breadth as the lower member, 2, and preferably of the same material and having a longitudinal row of perforations, 3-33, through the same from the top face to the lower face thereof. Each of said perforations is provided on the under side of part 1 with a stamped or pressed perforated metal disk, 6, placed concentric with and closely fitting around the perforations. Such perch is also provided with tin or other metallic V shaped trays or troughs, 4E and 5, with closed ends, with one of such ends of each tray or trough of the same size as the ends of the perch. These trays are made slightly smaller than the V shaped groove in part 2, so as to be easily placed within and removed from such groove. The large end of the trays may if preferable be made slightly larger than the ends of the perch so that a finger grip may be obtained to remove them from the groove.
In using this perch which is adapted to be placed on standards or in any manner fastened from the floor of the poultry house so as to allow access to the ends of the perch, a germicide is placed in the tray, 4 and 5, and the trays then placed in their position in the groove in part 2. The lice, mites and vermin upon leaving the fowls in the morning as they invariably do enter the perforations, 338, in part 1, and upon coming in contact with the metal disks, 66-6, fall into the germicide and are exterminated.
The object of the trays in the perch instead of a hollow perch without them is three fold; it allows part 1 and part 2 to be securely fastened together and non-detachable, at the same time allowing access to the inner side of the perch for the purpose of cleaning; the trays serve as a means to prevent the lice, mites and vermin from escaping from the germicide therein once they fall into the same, as the trays are filled only about half full of the germicide and should the lice, mites and vermin attempt to crawl out of the same, if they are not immediately eXterminat-ed, they would strike the sides of the metallic trays, which they cannot cling to, and fall back into the germicide, and by the use of the trays the perch is kept in a much cleaner condition and may be cleansed and the lice, mites and.
vermin removed without removing the perch from its position, which it has been necessary to do in prior inventions of this character, and the object of the disks, 6-66, being to prevent the lice, mites and vermin from returning to the upper face of part 1 or from clinging to the under side of part 1 after they have entered the perforations, 333, as upon striking these metal disks, 666, they fall into the germicide in the trays.
The perch may be of any desired length, and may be adapted to any size of poultry houses, coops or cages.
What I claim as new is:
1. A vermin killing poultry perch comprising two parts securely fastened together so as to leave no crevice between such parts, and non-detachable, the upper or cover part containing a longitudinal row of perforations through the same serving to receive lice, mites and vermin, and the lower or under part containing a longitudinal V shaped groove in the upper surface thereof, and metallic trays also V shaped in transverse cross section and with closed ends, one of which ends of each tray is of the size of the ends of the perch, made to fit into the longitudinal V shaped groove in the lower a longitudinal row of perforations through the same; a lower or under part containing a longitudinal V shaped groove in the upper face thereof, and V shaped removable trays fitting in the V shaped groove in the lower member of the perch and adapted to con- J tain a germicide and to receive lice, mites and vermin, each of said perforations through said upper or cover part being provided on the under side thereof with a stamped or pressed in perforated metal disk placed concentric with and closely fitting around the perforations to prevent lice, mites and vermin from returning to the surface of the perch.
