EDVIARD S. CBUMB, OF CI'IAR-LESTOWN, R'HODE ISLAND.
CLOSURE FOR POISON-BOTTLES.
nose iris.
Application filed July 8, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD S. CRUMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gharlestown, in the county of lVashington and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closures for Poison-Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures for poison bottles; and it has for its primary object the provision of means which will minimize the liability of one accidentally taking the contents of the bottle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a closure which will include a main sto per fitting the neck of a bottle in such manner as to prevent its removal on the application of slight pull thereagainst, and a false stopper removably fitted to the main stopper and adapted to be initially with drawn and to prevent the discharge of the contents of the bottle and to set up a warning on the separation of the main stopper and cause the attention of the user to be delinitely directed to the true contents of the bottle.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
in the accompanying orawingss-Figure 1 is a vertical section through a portion of a bottle, showing the application of the closure thereto; Fig. 2 is a side view of the bottle, illustrating the application of initially separating the main stopper from the false stopper; Fig. 3 is a side View of the closure; and a is a section on line 4i4: of Fig. 1.
The bottle 1 herein conventionally illustrated is of the usual well known design and provided with a vertical neck 2 having flared inner walls 3. The closure comprises a main stopper i of substantially frusto-conical form and having a maximum diameter exceeding the maximum internal diameter of the neck 2, so as to limit the applied adjustments of the stopper in the neck and thereby cause a portion 5 of the stopper to be exposed above the neck to form a manipulating surface which may be grasped by the hand to permit the stopper to be removed when desired.
The external surfaces of the stopper are preferably crowned, as at 6, so as to maxi- Specification of Letters latent.

mum the friction between the inner walls of the neck and the crown sin-faces of the stopper, and thus form secure connection which will ordinarily prevent removal of the stopper.
In order that the attention of tie user of the bottle may be specifically directed to the nature of the contents of the bottle it provide a false stopper 7, the latter having a substantially frusto-conical extension 8, which is normally arrangeu relatively loose in a receiving passage 9 in the main stopper so that when pull is applied to the false stopper the main stopper will be held against being accidental] y unseated. The false stopper is preferably provided with a manipulating portion 12 which extends beyond the sides of the main stopper so as to prevent the fingers of the hand from grasping the main stopper g the operation of initially effecting an entrance to the bottle.
In order that the two parts of the device may be permanently held operatively associated with each other when the device is properly removed from the neck of the bottle, I provide an elastic connecting member 11 secured at 12 to the false stopper and at 13 to the main stopper and normally exerting its tension to hold the two parts in operative position relatively. The construction of this connection is such that the false stopper may be entirely withdrawn from the main stogper and the connection folded over the upper rounded edge 14 of the main stopper, so as to expose the manipulating end of the latter. The two elements of the device may be provided with any obvious warning indicia or symbolic representation of the skull and Crossbones or the elements may be differently colored.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inven tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A closure for poison bottles comprising relatively separable stoppers, one fitting within the other, and elastic means connecting one of the stoppers with the other.
durin ill) and having an extracting portion overlying 2. A closure for poison bottles comprising In testimony whereof I atfix my signature a main stopper frictionally engaged in the in presence of two Witnesses. walls of the neck of the bottle, and a false EDWARD S ORUMB stopper removably fitted in the main stopper W1tnesses:
