Specification of Letters Patent.
nom nee,
lz rtentetl'llecn 23, limit.
implication filed' Gctober 23, 1912-. Serial No. 722414.
To all whom may concern):
Be it known that L Annxannen "WI-Wren, a citizen or the United States; residii'ig at Cleveland, in the county of Cmyali'orga and i State tlliro, have invented certain new ed for nee in connection with explosion enill gines, thou ,fll it is capable of use with other types of engines The objectot my invention is to hold a variable speed" engine at any desired speed between minimum. and maximum by a goveriror having; a constant or nnvarying speed.
By means of my improved engine governing mechanism; the s cod. of the engine can he changed at the will of the driver Without changing the governing speed of the governor, and the constant/or [invariable speed governor will hold the engine at any of its I various speeds whether running lightor underload.
The accompanying drawing is: an end view of a portion of an explosion engine, my improved governing mcehanism a'pplicd there to and'ehown in section.
in carrying out my invention any form of governor which acts on the centrifugal principle may be used, and this may be con-- ncctcd up in any desired manner with any desired form of engine throttle without departing from my inventive idea".
The accoiin'panyiiig drawing is intended one i'nechanical expression of the inventive idea herein disclosed by which constant or nnvarying: speed governor will hold a variahle speed engine at any of its speeds loctwecn minimum and maximum and whether running: light or under load.
lleltcrrine now to the mechanical ctrprcs s'ion here c cloned of the inventive idea, 1 is a cylinder of a vertical explosion engine. This cylinder is supplied with an explosive mixture from any desired source (not :slniwn, through a pipe 2, and this pipe is provided with any desired form of throttle ot Shown) for controlling the passage o'l the fluid to the engine and hence the speed or power of the engine,- and this Is true whether the engine is; driven h explosive force, steam or other source of newer. So
'Ql, which driven fair as} this improvement is concerned, there may boone or more than one throttle for the engine. As here shown, there are two throt or arm 7. The lower end of this arm 7 is secured to a housing 8, which in turn is sup.- j ported in any desired manner by theengine frame or casin 9. A. glJlll'Ollfiil the housing 8 and is suitably jonrnaled therein. housing 8 is a beveled gear 11 which gear shaft passes Suitably journaled in the 1s driven in any suitable manner (not shown) by the engine, and the gear ll. may be aptly termed, so far as the governing mechanism is eoi'iccrned, a driving gear. Attached to the shaft 10 is a beveled gear 1", driven by" the gear 11, and this gear 12. causes the shaft 10 to revolve. The said shaft 10 extends upward, as showr. and loosely jonrna-ied on this shaft is a governor housing 13', carrying the centrifugal governor'artns i l. A vertically .lnovable sleeve 15 has its lower end 16 engaging the bellcrank ends; 1? of the weighted governor arms, and this sleeve is normally held in err gageinent' with the ends 17 by a spiral spring 18. The tension of this spring 18 is adjustahle by mcans of an adjustinginit or sleeve 19. 3 A pivotal. connection 20 (dotted lines) serves to connect. the vertically movnl'ile sleeve 15 with the pivot arm l, so that when the sleeve is moved upward the arm at is alao moved and the governor links 13 connected with the arm are actuated to close or partinll v close the throttle for controlling the .spccd of the engine.
Connected with or formed a part of the governor canine; T13 is a coneshaped lriclion governor driving surface or member l v a friction dish 22. This; friction disk is keyed to revoluble shaft 23 to rotate with the shaft, but is longitudinally movable on the Shaft on an elongated key or spline 2 A hcvcl gear ii is'lreyed to the lower end of the shaft 23 '.1 gear, meshes wit h a gear 26, the latfor gear being keyed to d revolved by the shaft 10. Aticnl'ion directed to the fact that the shaft is set at an angle parallel with the adjacent side of the coneshaped surface or member 21, so that a; the
V which has its opposite endv pivotally connected at 6, to a vertical frame friction disk 22 is moved back and forth on the shaft 23, the said disk is at all times in frictional engagement With the cone-shaped surface or member 21. This friction disk 22 is moved back and forth on the shaft 23 at will, by means of an arm 27, which has one end engaging a groove 28 on the hub of the disk 22, while the other end of the arm carries an. internally screw-threaded sleeve 29, which receives and is, in mesh with a retatahle externally screw-threaded shaft 30. This screw-threaded shaft 30 is parallel Witthe shaft 23 and carries at one end an operating Wheel 31, by means of which the shaft 30 may be rotated by the person controlling the engine; v
F roni the foregoing description it will be seen that the friction disk 22 is driven by the engine and it in turn drives the governor through the intervention of the coneshaped friction surface or meinher 21, and the housing 13 which carries the centrifiigal governor. relative speed of the engine and the governor is controlled by the position of the friction dislt on the cone-shaped friction surface 21 that is to sa the friction disk 22 can be moved to a pointon the coneshaped friction surface 21 that has a circumference equal to the circumference of the friction disk 22, and then the friction disk and governor will rotate at the same speed. If the f *ict-ion disk is moved from this point toward the enlarged end of the cone-shaped surface, the disk 22 will rotate faster than the governor, and when the disk 22 is moved from said point toward the small end of the cone-shaped member the governor will rotate faster than the disk 2 The result of this variation of the speed of the dish 22, which is driven by the engine and consequently the variation oftne speed of the engine in respect to the speed of the gov- 'ernor, is that the governor being set, for instance, to operate the throttle at say revolutions of the governor, for holding the engine at its minimum speed, the movement of the disk 22 toward the enlarged end of the cone-shaped member 21, will require the engine to'run faster in order to rotate the governor at its governing speedfwhereas ii the disk 22 is moved toward the small or red'nced end of the cone-shaped member 21, the engine must rotate slower in order to maintain the governor at its set governing It will also he observed that the.
speed. By reason of'this fact the operator can increase the speed of the engine While the governingspeed oi the governor remains constant or unvariahle by turning the hand wheel 31 to cause the disk 22 to move to the enlarged end of the cone-shaped member 21, or can decrease the governed. speed of the engine by moving the friction disk 22 to thesinall end of the cone-shaped friction mom her. By reason of this operation the speed of the engine canhe instantly increased or decreased by'the operator or engineer wit out changing the governing speed of the governor, and at the same time the governor will hold the engine at its variable speed from minimum toinaximnmtvhether running light or under load.
From the ioregoing it will he observed that thegovernor can he set to begin its governing action at any desired speed of; the
governor, say 3 roxn 20 to 350 revolutions net minute and at the same time the 'overned speed ofthe engine can loe varied and not the governor, the said driving mechanism including a friction variable speed means for the purpose described.
2. The combination with amotor, of a governor therefor, a housing for the said governor having its lower portion shaped to form a cone shaped friction member, a driving mechanism between the engine and the governor, the said driving mechanism including a friction speed rooms, a screw threaded collar mounted thereon in engagement with the said speed means and an 010- erating lever on one end whereby the said speed means is positively varied for the pun pose described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
