To all whom it may concrm Be it known that l, MAURICE P. HnNvIs, citizen of the United States, residing at Washington,- District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Vendors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an apparatus for dispensing liquid and particularly to such an apparatus adapted to deliver a cup of water upon insertion of a proper coin- The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved structure adapted to withdraw one of a series of nested cups and to automatically fill. the cup with water and leave it in position for removal by the operator of the machine.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures-of the drawings.
The numeral 11 designates the casing of the vender which may be of any desired character or configuration, for instance, representing a wooden, bucket as shown in Fig. 1. The upper part of the casing is provided with a refrigerating chamber 12 of any desired character, being here shown in Fig. 3. with-a circulating coil 13 having the usual packed connection 14 to receive an inverted Water bottle 15. This coil discharges into a reservoir 16 having a valve 17 controlling the discharge opening 18 therefrom. This valve is normally held closed position by a coiled spring 19 disposed within the valve casing 20. The valve casing communicates by an opening 21 with a measuring chamber 22 extending downward therefrom and closed at its lower end by a valve or-cock 23 adapted to be oscillated by a discharge spout 24 carried thereby. This spout is normally held in its open position as shown in Fig. 3-by a spring 25 extending therefromto a fixed part.
The vender casing may be supported in any desired manner for instance upon a pedestal 26 as shown in Fig. 1. This pedestalis formed with a waste chamber 27 to receive a removable receptacle 28 and is' an opening 33 to permit access to a compartment 34 adapted to receive used cups.
At the front of the vender casing and preferably in alinement with the delivery opening 31 is a cup stack 35 which may be extended to any desired height above the casing. Within the stack is a cup delivering slide 36 provided with a cup guiding cylinder 37 which is formed at its lower end with one or more retaining dogs 38, Figs. 4, 5 and 6. This slide is normally held in its raised position by springs 39 extending from posts 40 upon the slide to the top of the casing 11. These posts extend through slots 41 in the stack 35 and the upper endof the stack is provided with a removable cover42 by which it may be filled with the nested cups 43. The cups used may be of any desired construction, prefer= ably tapering or conical as shown.
The lower part of the guide 37 is enlarged at 43 and connected to the slide 36. Below this connection slots 44 are formed. through which the dogs 38 operate. These dogs are pivoted in bearings 45 at each side of the slot 44 and each dog is formed at its opposite ends with retaining means or teeth 46: to engage the outer peripheries of the cups and to swing from engagement with one cup into contact with a succeeding one by action of spring 52 upon the dog, Fig. 7.
Beneath the delivering slide a cup clamp- .ing device is disposed and comprises the rigid metalsegmental frame 47 having secured to its outer face spring members 48 extending through the plate or frame and carrying segmental clamping plates 49 which partially surround the base of the cup and are moved into contact therewith. The outer face of the spring member 48 is formed with a straight holding portion-50 to retain the clamp plates in contact with the cup during the initial upward movement of the slide. These clamps are forced inward by the inwardly inclined projections 51 depending below the cup retaining means. The front portion of the frame and clamps are open to permit the direct removal of the 3 filled cup therefrom through the delivery ed with the slide 36'by a bar or connection 59 extending through a slot 60 in the casing and a slot 61' in the coin chute, and having at its outer end an operating handle 60. The plunger is also formed with a coin feed passage 62 inclined downward and passing transversely therethrough. At the rear pf this passage 9. shoulder 63 is formed and adapted to contact with the upper angular face 64: of the spring. detent 65 which is mounted upon the, casing and movable into a recess 66 therein.
The detent is also formed with a coin holder 67 having a curved contact face to facilitate the discharge of, the coin therefrom when forced downward by the contact face 68 of the plunger into the discharge passage 69 thereof. The portion of the plunger beneath the shoulder 63 is cutaway at 70 to permit a free operation of the detent. The downward travel'of the cup slide also automatically operates the liquid delivery from the supply reservoir through the projection 71 carried by thezslide which engages the lower end of tlie lever 72 pivoted at 73 and having its upper slotted end 74 pivotally connected to the valve stem 75, as shown in Fig. 3.
In the operation of the invention if the plunger 'be pushed downward without .the insertion of a coin the shoulder thereon engages the detent and prevents operation.
Whena proper coin rests 1n contactwith the detent. it is forced backward and the downward movement of the plunger continues carrying. with it the cup delivering slide which is directly connected thereto. This movement brings the slide into the position shown in Fig. 4 and forces the clamps into contact with the-lowermost cup, which has been previously held by the lower'contact face of the retaining dogs; This movement forces the coin into'the discharge passage and it then falls through the chute into the coin receptacle provided therefor. The downward travel of the slide also swings the discharge spout downward as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3 thus cutting 01f discharge through the turning cock while the projection upon the slide opens the valve from the supply to fill the measuring chamber. When pressure on the handle. ofthe plunger is released the springs 39 raise the slide and during the initial movement thereof the holding faces on the clamps retain them in contact with the base of the cup while the dogs are withdrawn from the upper edge thereof and owing to the taper thereof the upper gripping faces of the dogs are forced inward to contact with the next cup of the series which is being withdrawn from the clamped cup as shown in Fig. 5. In the continued upward movement of the slide the clamps are entirely released and the spring upon the dogs throws the lower gripper face thereof into contact with the upper portion of the lower cup in the slide, as shown in Fig. 6. During this upward travel of the slide the spring 25 restores the discharge spout and cook to its open posi tion to discharge the contents of the measuring chamber into the cup at the delivery opening of the casing while the valve of the supply is automatically closed by its controlling spring. The filled cup can then be renroved by the user and afteruse deposited in the compartment at the base of the pedestal and the drainage or any overflow is carried to the receptacle in the pedestal for that purpose. When the plunger and slide .have been completely raised the detent springs beneath the shoulder on the plunger andprevents further operation of the device until the insertion of another coin.
The invention provides a direct and positive operation by a single movement and for the storing of a large supply of nested cups which are separately delivered by the slide and clamp mechanisms. It also efiects the filling of the measuring chamber during the delivery of the cup and the filling of the cup during the return travel of the cup deliverer. It will therefore be seen that the invention presents a simple, eificient and economically constructed device for dispensing liquids in individual cups and in the most sanitary manner.
The cup delivery or dispensing means disclosed in this application except in so far as the same may be claimed in combination with liquid dispensing means forms no part of the invention intended. to be covered by this application, as such subject matter is described and claimed in a divisional application filed August l, 1913,- Serial No. 782,415.
While I have shown in the drawings and described in detail one-preferred embodi- -ment of my invention as an illustration thereof, I do not desire to limit myself to such specific embodiment, but intend to cover the principle of my invention in its various applications broadly.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits what- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination with a liquid supply, of discharge means therefor, a reciprocating containing cylinder disposed to deliver cups at the discharge from said liquid supply, and a connection from said cylinder to actuate said discharge controlling means.
2. The combination with a valved liquid supply, of actuating means connected to operate said valve, a sliding cup-delivering device carried by said means, and means beneath said delivering device for holding a cup during one movement of said device.
8. The combination with a valved liquid supply, of. actuating means connected to operate said valve, a slidable cup delivering device carried by said means, and a valved discharge spout actuated by said device.
4. The combination with a liquid supply, of means for controlling the same, a cup stack, a delivery slide having retaining means therein, cup holding means beneath said slide, and a pivoted spout adapted to discharge into said cup when the slide is raised.
5. The combination with a valved liquid supply, of means for controlling the same, a cup delivering slide having retaining means therein, a measuring chamber communicating with said supply, and a valved delivery spout adapted to be actuated by said slide.
6. The combination with a valved liquid supply, of means for controlling the same, a cup stack, a delivery slide having retaining means therein, a measuring chamber communicating with said supply, and a discharge spout provided with a valve at its pivot and actuated by said slide.
7. In a liquid vender, a casing provided with a pusher therein, a cup delivering device connected to said pusher, a valved liquid supply, and a valve operating connection from said device.
8. In a liquid vender, a casing provided with a pusher therein, a cup delivering device connected to slide with said pusher, a cup holding device beneath said delivering device, and valve operating means connected to said delivering device.
9. In a. liquid vender, a casing provided With a pusher therein, a cup delivering device connected to slide with said pusher, a valved liquid supply, and a valve operating connection from said delivery device.
10. In a liquid vender, a casing provided with a pusher therein,acup delivering device connected to slide with said pusher, a cup holding device beneath said delivering device, a valved liquid supply, valve operating means from said delivery device, a valved discharge spout,. and a measuring chamber intermediate said supply and spout.
11. In a liquid vender, a casing provided with a pusher therein, a cup delivering device connected to said pusher, a valved liquid supply, a pivoted discharge spout having a controlling valve, and a spring for shifting said spout in one direction.
12. In a liquid vender, a liquid measuring chamber provided with means to control the inlet thereto and the discharge therefrom, a reciprocating cup delivering device, and connections from said device to actuate the inlet and discharge controlling means in the downward movement thereof.
13. In a liquid vender, a measuring chamber provided with means to control the inlet thereto and the discharge therefrom, a vertically disposed reciprocating cup deliverer, a connection from said deliverer to actuate said inlet controlling means during a downward movement, and a connection with said deliverer to actuate said discharge controlling means during downward movement.
14. In a liquid vender, a liquid measuring chamber provided with means to control the inlet thereto and the discharge therefrom, a vertically disposed reciprocating cup deliverer, a connection from said deliverer to actuate said inlet controlling means during a downward movement, a connect-ion with said deliverer to close said discharge controlling means during a down ward movement, and means for automatically opening the discharge and closing said inlet during an upward movement of the deliverer.
15. In a liquid dispensing device, a liquid supply provided with a cont-rolling valve, a measuring chamber communicating with said valve, a cock controlling the discharge from said chamber, and a cup delivering device having independent connections to the valve and cook to cause discharge after the delivery of a cup into alinement with said coc 16. In a liquid vending device, a valved liquid supply, a measuring chamber communicating with said supply, a turning cock for controlling the discharge from said chamber, a discharge spout connected to operate said cock, and a cup delivering device mounted to engage said spout in its travel.
17. In a liquid vending device, a valved liquid supply, a measuring chamber communicating with said supply, a turning cock for controlling the discharge from said chamber, a. discharge spout mount-ed upon said cock for oscillation therewith, a spring for normally holding said spout to open said cock, and a cup delivering device mounted to engage said spout in its downward movement to close said cock.
18. In a liquid dispensing device, a valved liquid supply, a measuring chamber communicating therewith, means for controlling the discharge from said chamber, a traveling cup deliverer contacting in its traveling with the discharge controlling means, and a lever connecting the cup deliverer with the supply valve.
19. In a liquid vending device, the combination with actuating means, of a cup delivering slide carried by said means, a liquid supply, and a controlling connection for said supply, disposed in the path of travel of said slide to be actuated in the movement thereof.
20. In a liquid vending device, a liquid supply, a valve therefor having an extended stem, a lever connected to said stem, and a cup delivering slide having means to engage said lever to operate said valve.
21. In a liquid dispensing device, means adapted to support a series of nested cups above the point of delivery, means surrounding the nested cups for automatically supporting and delivering said cups, and means voir, of means for controlling the flowtherefrom, a movable cup delivering device, and relatively stationary cup holding means cooperating with the delivering device.
23. The'combination with a liquid reservoir, of a valve, actuating means for the valve, a cup delivering device carried by the actuating means, and cup holding means cooperating with the delivering device.
