ROLLER SIDE BEARING.
specification of Letters Eatent.
' Patented Doc. 23, it
Application filed February M, 1912. Serial No. 67?,530.
To all whom it r/ioy concern:
Be it known that I, AaNoLD S'rconr, a county oil Allegheny and State of l-ennsylvania, have invented a new and useful. Improvement in Roller Side Bearings, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to roller side hearings for railway trucks, and is particularly adapted to those forms of railway trucks in which the car body is supported solely on the side hearings, such as one form of street railway trucks now in use.
The object of the invention is'to provide a side hearing for the character of trucks stated which completely overcomes the tremendous friction which occurs when the car passes around curves.
bearing; Fig. 3 is in part a side elevation and in part a vertical central longitudinal section thereof; and Fig. 4 is a central transverse section on the line %4, Fig. 3.
A portion of the side frame of the truck at 1. This may he of any suitable is shown or tles"'ccl type. Mounted in the side 1h slit "verti ally therein are a pair of p 2 and 3 whit. l normally are held projecto nmvardly lay means of the helical spring; 4: surromading the same. The tops of the posts are rounded and fit into pockets 5 in a cap (2 the cap being held in place on the Y. Tl a type of motor I derahle nim'ilien; on dil t 1 various one; of the ales the cap on top oi the spring; post a solid. casting; provided with wearing shoes whichcan he removed, Tlhe car hotly reststlirectly upon these caps secured to the bottom of the housing:
and is entirely saoported thereby. 'lthese solid eaps slide upon and are guided by 'iaped angle guide members secured to tl a bottom. of the car body. The J s it guides located a. long distance in the center of oscillation, and the friction be tween the caps and guides, working on such a long arm, is tremendous, so that it quires great force to swivel the truck under the car. This force transmitted to the wheel flanges and rail head, producing a grinding action which. quickly wears both to such an extent that the power wasted. in swiveling the truck on curves is probably the least item of loss. The difficulty of swiveling the truck also tends to derailment of the can With my invention the cap 5 is so c0nstrueted to provide a. housing for a freely traveling rolle As shown in the drawings, the cap and housing are a. single integral casting, but the number of parts and :lhe character of material from which the same is made is not of the essence of the invention. As shown, the housing has the upwardly projecting side walls 8 and end walls 9 forming substantially a box. The bottom of the housing is provided on each side with runways 10 and intermediate the same with a depressed portion 11. Preferably the run-- ways'are forn'iod of hardened steel plates y countersunk rivets 13 Or other suitable lastening means. In the housing is a freely traveling roller comprising the large central portion 15 adapted to have the car body rest directly thereupon and sumo-oiling said car body, and the reduced end portions which freely roll on the runways l0. central depressed portion 11 of such de that the larger portion 15 or" the roller d not contact therewith. The car body on bottom carries a suitable hearing plate member 17 resting upon the roller 15.
lh'e'i'eiahly the housing .1d the rune". 10 are of are shape struck cm the the .l center oi? we tion or swiveling oi t uch under this body, and the roller and its reduced on portions 16 are all. conical, the lines of these cones converging at the theoretical center of (i of attachment of the posts 2 and 3, as appath.
oscillation of the truck. One of the runways 10 is higher than the other, and both runways are inclined laterally to such a degree that the upper longitudinal surface of the roller 15 is horizontal, as shown in Fig. 3. As a consequence, the roller tends to run in an are shaped path and therefore [guides the swiveling motion of the truck so that the bearing plates 17 could be ordinary fiat plates, were it not for abnormal and accidental heavy lateral forces induced by abnormal rail and speed conditions. Even if of angleashape the side bearings do not normally bear against the depending flange, thereby removing absolutely this element of friction so pronounced with the old solid spring caps. This is due to the tendency ofthe'rollers naturally to run in an are shaped curve conforming to the are of the member 17 so that if, the housing is forced against \the depending flange, it has a long bearing thereagainst.
The particular form of rollers, that is, with an enlarged part to carry the car body and with parts of smaller diameter for running on the runway, is particularly adapted to the form of truck in which the distance between the spring posts 2 and 3 is limited, as it is not advisable to have theroller roll directly over either spring post, or too closely thereto, which would'have a tendency for the other spring post to fly up and throw the bearing out of level. The reduced end portions 16 of the rollers give to the latter a very considerable number of revolutions without bringing them too close over thespring post, while the enlarged central portion 15 allows of a longer travel of the car body, due to its greater diameter, thereby giving the large travel required in order to permit of a largeangular variationof the truck under the car body, such ,as is' Any dirt or water getting intothe ho-us- 1 ing escapes through the central opening 1 or through side openings 20 which are formed by cuttingaway a part. of the bottom to provide spaces for the heads of the rivets 13. 1
The are shaped runway is not' symmetrical relative to the line connecting the points pears clearly in Fig. 2. This is due to the fact that with this type of truck, the theoretlcal center of oscillation is some distance The outer wall of the housing is on afrom a, straight -line connecting the two side bearings or supports. The housing described forms the cap for the spring posts 1 and 2 as well as forming the runway for the roller 15. It is designed to fit existing trucks of the type described having spring posts to which are connected caps forming the sole support for the car body, the car having no center bearing. This side bearing is absolutely frictionless, as the roller is free to travel back and forth in the housing. Said roller cannot become displaced because the load is always resting thereupon. The roller also serves to guide the truck in its swiveling movement, as there is no slipping or sliding necessary between the car body and the roller or the roller and the bearing,
due to the tendency of the roller to always travel in an are shaped path. It therefore eliminates the friction of the old form of solid bearing caps for the spring posts, the grinding and wear due to such sliding movements, the waste of power, the grinding and wear of the wheel flanges and rails and the liability of derailment of the old form of spring caps.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a truck frame, of spring posts mounted therein, a cap mounted on said spring posts and arranged to form runways having portions at different heights and provided with end walls forming stops, and a rolter having two diameters, the smaller diameter arranged to roll on said runways and the larger diameten arranged to have the car body rest thereupon and to contact said end walls at the limits of movement of said roller in both directions.
2. The combination with a truck frame, of
spring posts mounted therein, a cap for said duced end portions rolling on said runways,
said roller resting loosely upon said runways and being removable from the open top of said cap when the car body is removed thcrefrom.
3,- The combination with a truck frame, of spring posts mounted therein, a cap mounted on said spring posts and providing arc shaped runways, and a conical roller arranged to travel on said runways and adapted to have the'car body rest thereupon and forming a guide and a support for the car body, said'runways being inclined laterally to a degree that the upper longitudinal surface of the roller is horizontal.
l. A truck side bearing comprising a housing having its bottom forming" an are In testimbny whereof, I have hereunto set shaped runwayl, end 3, conical I'Ollfig ar- 'my hand. ran ed to brave on sai runwa and a apt- I ed l have the car body rest the reupon, said ARNOLD STUCKI 5 runway being inclined laterally to a degree Witnesses:
that the upper longitudinal surface of the F. W. WINTER, roller is horizontal. MARY E. CAHOON.
