Be it known that I, AaNoLD S'rconr, a county oil Allegheny and State of l-ennsylvania, have invented a new and useful. Improvement in Roller Side Bearings, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to roller side hearings for railway trucks, and is particularly adapted to those forms of railway trucks in which the car body is supported solely on the side hearings, such as one form of street railway trucks now in use.
The object of the invention is'to provide a side hearing for the character of trucks stated which completely overcomes the tremendous friction which occurs when the car passes around curves.

One of the runways 10 is higher than the other, and both runways are inclined laterally to such a degree that the upper longitudinal surface of the roller 15 is horizontal, as shown in Fig. 3. As a consequence, the roller tends to run in an are shaped path and therefore [guides the swiveling motion of the truck so that the bearing plates 17 could be ordinary fiat plates, were it not for abnormal and accidental heavy lateral forces induced by abnormal rail and speed conditions. Even if of angleashape the side bearings do not normally bear against the depending flange, thereby removing absolutely this element of friction so pronounced with the old solid spring caps. This is due to the tendency ofthe'rollers naturally to run in an are shaped curve conforming to the are of the member 17 so that if, the housing is forced against \the depending flange, it has a long bearing thereagainst.
The particular form of rollers, that is, with an enlarged part to carry the car body and with parts of smaller diameter for running on the runway, is particularly adapted to the form of truck in which the distance between the spring posts 2 and 3 is limited, as it is not advisable to have theroller roll directly over either spring post, or too closely thereto, which would'have a tendency for the other spring post to fly up and throw the bearing out of level. The reduced end portions 16 of the rollers give to the latter a very considerable number of revolutions without bringing them too close over thespring post, while the enlarged central portion 15 allows of a longer travel of the car body, due to its greater diameter, thereby giving the large travel required in order to permit of a largeangular variationof the truck under the car body, such ,as is' Any dirt or water getting intothe ho-us- 1 ing escapes through the central opening 1 or through side openings 20 which are formed by cuttingaway a part. of the bottom to provide spaces for the heads of the rivets 13. 1

The roller also serves to guide the truck in its swiveling movement, as there is no slipping or sliding necessary between the car body and the roller or the roller and the bearing,
due to the tendency of the roller to always travel in an are shaped path. It therefore eliminates the friction of the old form of solid bearing caps for the spring posts, the grinding and wear due to such sliding movements, the waste of power, the grinding and wear of the wheel flanges and rails and the liability of derailment of the old form of spring caps.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a truck frame, of spring posts mounted therein, a cap mounted on said spring posts and arranged to form runways having portions at different heights and provided with end walls forming stops, and a rolter having two diameters, the smaller diameter arranged to roll on said runways and the larger diameten arranged to have the car body rest thereupon and to contact said end walls at the limits of movement of said roller in both directions.
2. The combination with a truck frame, of
spring posts mounted therein, a cap for said duced end portions rolling on said runways,
said roller resting loosely upon said runways and being removable from the open top of said cap when the car body is removed thcrefrom.
3,- The combination with a truck frame, of spring posts mounted therein, a cap mounted on said spring posts and providing arc shaped runways, and a conical roller arranged to travel on said runways and adapted to have the'car body rest thereupon and forming a guide and a support for the car body, said'runways being inclined laterally to a degree that the upper longitudinal surface of the roller is horizontal.
