ALBERT P. MoGLINGI-IY, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
AUTOMATIC GREASE-PLUG LOCK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT P. MGGLINCHY, citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of. Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Grease-Plug Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to automatic grease plug locks, and has for its object the production of a grease plug especially adapted to be used upon locomotive engines, or other places where the continual jar would tend to cause the plug to become loose or to rotate.
The principal object of this invention is the production of an efficient lock which will efficiently engage the adjustable plug in such a manner as to hold the same against accidental rotation.
Another object of this invention is the production of an ei'licient pa wl mechanism which is simple in construction, and consists of a comparatively small number of parts for holding the grease plug against accidental rotation.
lVith these and other objects in view, this invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the grease plug. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the grease plug. Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. is a trans verse section taken through the grease plug just above the locking pawl.
By referring to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the plug comprises the socket l which is provided with a lower externally threaded end 2, which end is adapted to be threaded into an aperture formed in the desired portion of the machinery for attaching the plug for lubricat ing purposes. The plug 1 is provided with flattened portions 3 for facilitating the adjustment of the plug 1 by means of the wrench or gripping mechanism. The socket 1 is internally threaded, and within this internally threaded socket is adjustably mounted a feeding plunger which plunger is threaded so as to be vertically adjustable in the socket 1 as the feeding plunger 4; is rotated. The feeding plunge 1 is provided with a Vertically extending neck 5 which is Specification of Letters Patent.

provided upon its sides with a plurality of vertically extending grooves 6, which grooves extend the entire length of the neck 5.
A plurality of spaced ears 7 are formed upon the socket 1, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4t, and a locking pawl 8 is pivotally mounted between these cars 7 by means of the pivot pin 9. This locking pawl 8 is provided with a contacting finger 10, which contacting finger is adapted to engage one of the longitudinally extending grooves 6 for holding the plug 5 against rotation when it is desired to hold the plug in a locked position. This pawl S is provided upon its lower end with an enlarged knuckle portion 11, which knuckle portion is pro 'vided with a socket 12. A coil spring 13 has one end seated in the socket 12 formed in the knuckle portion 11, and the other end of the spring 13 is fitted in the socket 14; formed in the socket or base 1 of the plug. It will be seen that this coil spring 13 will exert an outward pressure upon the pawl and thereby force the projecting finger 10 in engagement with the vertically extending slot- 6 formed in the upwardly extending neck 5. The pawl 8 is provided upon its upper rear end with a plurality of transversely extending groove portions 15 for constituting roughened surfaces for facilitating the withdrawing of the pawl S from the notches 6 of the plunger at.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very eliicient and durable device has been produced whereby the vertical plunger of the gravity feed grease plug will be held against accidental rotation which would cause the lubricant to be fed when it was unnecessary to do so, or cause the plunger to become entirely lost from the socket 1. There has thus been provided a simple and etlicient device of the kind described, and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
An automatic grease plug comprising an internally and an externally threaded body. portion, a collar formed integral with said 105 body portion and provided with a socket formed in the periphery thereof, a pair of spaced ears formed integral with said body and extending above said collar, a threaded plunger adapted to be rotated in said body and Provided with a plurality of vertically extending grooves, a locking pawl pivotally mounted between said ears and provided With a depending-knuckle having a pocket portion in alinement With the socket formed in said collar, a coil spring positioned in said socket and said pocket, said depending knuckle of said pawl constituting means for protecting said spring said pawl provided with a finger portion adapted to engage one of the grooves of said plunger and said 10 finger portion provided With a plurality of transversely extending finger engaging grooves at its rear end for facilitating the Withdrawal of said finger from said vertically extending grooves of said plunger.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
