a citizen of the United States, residing at\.
Butte, in the county of Silverbow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and.
useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being, had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to valves and has special reference to the kind of valves that are used in combination with pneumatic tires.
An object of this invention is to provide a valve of the character described which is adapted to relieve the pressure upon the interior of the tire after the same has reached a predetermined point.
Another object of this invention is the production o' a valve of the class described which may be easily disconnected from the valve stein, whereby the several parts may be removedwhen it is desired to clean the same provided any particles of dirt or dust are carried by any ot the several parts.
Xl'ith these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will he hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of the wheel showing the valve member attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section ot' the valve member. F ig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view ot a portion of the device showing the same as it discharges the excess pressure of air. 1
By referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, it will be seen that the device is used in con'ihination with a pneumatic. tire 1 which is carried by the rim 2.. The rim 2 is provided withthe usual opening il through which the valve stein 4 is adapted to pass. This valve stem 4 is provided with. an externally threaded portion 5 upon which the body (i is threaded by means ot' the squared portions 7 which are adapted to be engaged by a wrench or otlu r suitable means. .-'\djacent tlusc squared portions 7 there is provided a threaded portion 8 which is adapted to receive the hood 9 which is placed over the valve member. is provided with a 'reduced portion extend- 1ng beyond the threaded portion 3as illustrated at 10. Within this. reduced portion \10 there is provided a' central bore 11'and` with transversely extending openings 12 which extend into this central bore 11. In order to provide a passage between this central bore 11 and the valve stem 4 there is provided a central .passage 13. For this purpose the outer portion of the reduced member 10 is provided with an enlarged internally threaded portion 14 in which the PatentedDec.16, 1913. y
cap 15 is threaded and this cap 15 is provided with the longitudinally extending ap erture 16 and with the threaded portion 17 whereby a pump of theordinary construction may be attached thereto for forcing air into the tire.
There is provided within the bore 11 a slidable plunger -18 which carries a sleeve 19 in which the spring 20 is adapted to fit, the other end of the spring 20 bearing upon the' inner face of the cap- 15; The inner end of thisA slidable plunger 18 fis provided with the slightly concave face 2 1 which carries the wash er 22. Adjacent this inner 'end 21 there are provided a plurality of apertures 28 which extend into the inner portion of the plunger 18 and then extend outwardly so as. to communicate withthe circumferential groove 24.' T here is also provided a seconds ary plunger which is adapted to work within the passage 26, formed in the plunger 18 and the outer endfof this plunger 25 carries a spring 27 for holding the same in its correct position. lt will be seen that when the air contained within the tire 1 reaches a sufficientpressure, t-he same will so bear upon the inner portion of the-plunger 18-as to di lvethe same down and compress the spring 20. The air will then passv down through he apertures 23 and into the groove 24 and when this fn-cove 2t registers with the transversely extending openings 12 the air may escape until the pressure within thetire is lowered sutlciently to allow the force of the spring to close the valve.
By referringl to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the outer portion of the face 21 will bear upo'n the 'cup-shaped portion 28 formed within -the body (l. Bythis construction considerable space is obtained for allowing the washer 22 to he raised from the face 2l, whereby the tire can be easily inflated. Tn this manner a double acting valve hasbeen produced whereby the tire can be inflated and which is also provided with means for discharging cscess air when the pressure reaches apredctcrniined point. .f
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed. as new, is:-
1. A -device of the class describedcornprising a. body portion, a bore formed within said body, a slidable plunger positioned within said bore, an opening formed in oneV end 'ofsaid body'cons'tit'uting an air passage, aclosure cap positioned within the other end of said body, spring means positioned .within said bore and bearing at one end` upon said plunger and at the other end upon` said cap, said plunger rovided-J with a plurality of apertures exten ing thereinto,
said plunger also provided with a circumferential groove, said apertures communicatingwith said groove, said body provided with a .plurality of-transversely extending openings, said .plunger adapted tn be drivendown by the force of air and in this manner compressing said spring for allowing said groove. .to communicate with :laid transversely extending openings whei'eby the air fsmay escape..
