" A still further object of the inventionis to provide in a device of the character indi- -cated a shaft adapted1 to'be operatively connected with the dispensing machine or apparatus and a lever mechanism for holdingl the shaft against rotation inv one direction. This lever mechanism is provided with a pocket adapted to receive a checkoi1 predetermined sine. When the check is deposited in the pocket the lever is moved to a position whereby the shaft is released or rendered free-to turn in either of two directions as'the shaft rotates to operate thedispensing machine it eventually operates mechanism with which the check controlled device is provided fork moving the pocket to check releasingposition whereby the check `is permitted to fall* Jfrom the mechanism into the body of the casing inclosing the same. Means are provided for returning the parts to normal positions and a member is so mounted as to strike the check when the pocket is moved to check releasing position whereby the check ispositiveiy ejected from the pocket.

rEhe check device comprises a casing 1, which may be of any suitable design or pattern. A shelf 2 is located in the upper por tion of the casing and isV provided with openings and Il. in its top with an opening 5. The opening 3 is somewhat longer than the opening 4; andl is located more nearly under the opcning 5. A block 6 is slidably mounted in the casing 1 between the shelf 2 and the top of the casing and is provided with an opening which extends vertically through the same. Flanges 7 depend from the shelf 2 and surround the opening 4. A chute 8 depends from the shelf 2 below the opening When the device is operated', a check 1s inserted! through` the opening 5 into the llO Vtudinally along the space between the shelf block 6. The block 6 is then moved longi- 2 and the 'top of the casing 1. 1f the check is of the proper size it will be carriedv by the block to the opening 4 through which it will fall between the danges 7. If the check is not of the propery size it falls through the opening 3 and passes down through the chute 8 into the lower portion of the casing without operating the mechan nism.
A shaft 9 is journaled in the casing 1 and is adaptedvto be connected in any suitable manner with the pump or other machine which is to be operated. A' ratchet wheel 1() is fixed to the shaft 9 and is located between the sides of the casing 1. A guide l1 is located above the ratchet wheel 10 and a pawl l2 is slidably mounted inthe guide 11 and is adapted to engage the teeth of the Wheel 10. A lever 13 is fulcrumed in the casing 1 and is provided at one end with a pivoted link 14 which is also pivotally connected with the pawl 12. The lever 13 is provided at that end opposite the end thereof at which the link 14 is mounted with a check pocket 15,' which is located below the opening 3 and the flanges surround the said opening. ik weight 16 is adj ustably mounted on the lever 13 at one side of the fulcrum thereof and by shifting the said weight the poise of the said lever may be varied or adjusted.
A rod 17 is pivoted in the casing 1 and is provided with an approximately horizontal portion 18 and a vertical portion 19. The said rod is provided at its upper end with a loop 20 which loosely receives the lever 13 in the vicinity of the pocket 15. Guides 21 may be mounted in the casing 1 and a rod 22 is slidably mounted inthe said guides. The said rod is provided with an eye 23 which receives the vertical portion 19 of the rod 17. A stop 24 is mounted upon the rod 22 at a point between the guides 21 and a coil spring surrounds the rod 22 and bears at one end against the stop and at its other end against the guide 21 nearest the rod 17 This spr-ing is under tension with a tendency to hold theeye 23 toward the adjacent guide 21 whereby the portion.19 of the rod 17 is normally held in an approximately vertical position. A spring 26 surrounds the rod 22 between the stop 24 and that guide 21 which is more remote from the rod 17 rEhe spring 26 serves merely as a buffer to check the longitudinal vmovement of the rod 22.
rEhe rod 17 is provided at a point below its pivot with a weight 27 which has a. tendency to hold the portion 19 of the said yrod substantially vertical.
A member 28 is pivoted in the casing 1 and is provided with an end portion 29 whichnormally lies in the path. of movement ofthe teeth of the wheel 19 and, the
noemen opposite end of the member 28 is downwardly disposed toward the horizontal portion 18 of the rod 17. A stop 30 is located in the path of movement of the end ,portion 29 of the said member 28.
A gear wheel 31 is ixedto the shaft 9 and meshes with the gear wheel 32 which is journaled upon a stud 33 located in the casing 1. The gear wheel 3l is of relatively small diameter while'the gear wheel 32 is of relatively lar e diameter. rThe gear wheel 32 is provide with a series df perforations 34 in any one of .which may be positioned a pin 35. An arm 36 is pivoted in the casing l and has an end which extends into the path of movement of the pin 35. "ll he other end of /the said arm is loosely connected with the horizontal portion 18 of the rod 17 "The arm 36 is further provided' with a depending finger 37. A counter 38 is located inthe casing '1 and its shaft is operatively connected with a plate 39 and which is located in the path of movement'of theiinger 37. A wire 40 is connected with any part of the casing 1 and a wire 41 is connected with the plate 39. These wires are electrically connected with batteries `42 and a buzzer or alarm 43. When the parts are in their normal positions the pawl 12 is in enga-gement with the teeth of the wheel 10 and the pocket 15 is in an elevated position under the flanges 7. Thus the shaft 9 is held against rotation in one direction. As soon as a check is deposited in the pocket 15 the said pocket descends so that the lever 13 comes in co-ntactwitlthe lower side of the loop- 20. At the same time, the pawl 12 is lifted above the teeth of the wheel l0. Therefore the said wheel and the shaft to which it is attached are free to rotate. As the said parts rotate, the gearl wheel 32 is rotated until the pin 35 comesl in contact with the arm 36. When this occurs the said arm is swung upon its pivot whereby 4the portion 18 of the rod 17 is swung in a downward direction, and the portion 19 of the said rod is moved down whereby the pocket 15 is moved to a check releasing position. At the same time the loop 20 strikes the check and ejects the same from the pocket. |Thus the machine which is operatively connected with the`shaft`9 is operated to dispense the commodity. As soon as the pin 35 passes the end of the arm 36 the spring 25 and the weight 27 come into play and return the parts to their normal positions. lf at any time before the pin 35`strikes the arm 36, an attempt shouldl be made to rotate the shaft 9 ina direction opposite to'that .in which it should rotate to operate the pump, one of the teeth of the wheel 10 will strike the end of the member` 28 and the said member is swung down so that it strikes the horizontal portion 18 of the rod 17, and the said rod isl moved to bring the pocket to check releasing position. Therefore any attempt to make the device repeat or prolong its operation will be frustrated or prevented. By shifting the pin 35 in the perforations 34 the dispensing machine may be caused to deliver any predetermined quantity of the commodity. However, by removing the gear wheel 32 from the stud 33 and turning the same with relation to the gear Wheel 3l and replacing it upon the stud the quantity of the commodity delivered may be regulated to a nicety.
As the arm 3G is swung the finger 37 encounters the plate 39 and operates the counter 3S. 'lhis means is provided for indicating the number of times that the check pocket has been moved to check releasing position. Each time that the linger 3T comes in Contact with the plate 39 an electric circuit is completed along the wires 40 and 4l and through the battery 4t2 and alarm 43. Therefore means is provided Jfor announcing each time that the device is op erated. The alarm fl?) may be positioned at some distance from the device, and in fact out of hearing to one who operates the device. Therefore a person having supervision of the alarm will be notified when the device is being operated, and if he entertains suspicion that spurious checks are being used, he may examine the contents of the casing after each operation to determine what. individual is using such cheeks to operate the device.
Having described the invention what is claimed; is
1. Apparatus of the cha acter described comprising a rotatable shaft, a pivoted lever disposed near the same and provided with check holding means, means operated by the pivoted lever to control the rot-ation of the shaft, a pivoted weight, an approximately L-shaped lever having its vertical arm loosely connected with the pivoted lever to move with relation thereto and strike the check in the check holding means to eject it therefrom and itsI horizontal arm connected near its free end with the pivoted weight to be held thereby in its normal position, a lower pivoted lever having a loose connection with said horizontal arm` and means driven by the shaft to trip said lower lever.
2. Apparatus of the character described, comprising a rotatable shaft, a lever pivoted near the shaft and provided with cheek holding means, means operated by the pivoted lever to control the rotation of the shaft, a 4pivoted Weight, a rod connected with the pivoted Weight to be normally held thereby m one position and having loose connection with said pivoted lever for movement with relation thereto to eject a cheek from the check holding means, and `means operated by the shaft to move the pivoted rod in one direction.
3. A check controlled device comprising a journaled shaft, a lever fulcrumed adjacent the shaft and having a pocket adapted to receive a check, means carried by the lever for holding the shaft against rotation in one direction when the pocket is in an elevated position, said means adapted to release the shaft when the pocket is in a lowered position, a rod pivotally mounted and engageable with the lever to move the pocket to check receiving and check releasing positions, means operated by the shaft to move the rod and means for varying the interval of movement of the rod with relation to the movement of the shaft.

A check controlled device comprising a journaled shaft, a lever fulcrumed adjacent the shaft having a pocket adapted to receive a cheek, means carried by the lever for holding the shaft against rotation in one direction when the pocket is in an elevated position, said means adapted to release the shaft when the pocket is in a lowered posi tion, means ope lated by the shaft to move the pocket to check releasing position when the shaft rotates in one direction and means for moving the pocket to check releasing position when the shaft is turned in the opposite direction. 4
5. A check controlled device comprising a journaled shaft, a lever fulcrumed adjacent the shaft and having a pocket adapted to receive a check, means carried by the lever for holding the shaft against rotation in one direction when the pocket is in an elevated position, said means adapted to release the shaft when the pocket is in a lowered position, means operated by the shaft to move the pocket to check releasing position when the sha'tt is turned in one direction a prcdetermined number ot' rotations and means for immediately moving the pocket to check releasing position when the shaft is turned in an opposite direction.
