Specioaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 16, 1913.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED H. NEWPHER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weather-Guards for Windows, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. 4
rEhe invention relates to a weather guard adapted for attachment to the lower edge of the bottom rail of a window sash. 1t is especially adapted for use in connection with the windows of railway cars, though it may be applied to other windows.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and yet eiicient guard to exclude drafts, moisture and dust at the bottom ot the window; and it consists of a device as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fi re 1 is a detail sectional perspective of t lower rails of a pair of sashes equipped with the improved weather guard and of the window sill; Fig. 2 is a detail bottom plan view of the weather guard; and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the bottom rail of a sash showing a modiied form of construction.
There is shown in the drawings a pair of sashes 10, 11, of a so-called double sash window, and at 12 a window sill, here represented as made of sheet metal.
The weather guard comprises a concav metal plate 13, which is fitted within a correspondingly shaped channel in the bottom rail 14 ot the sash and is secured to this rail by any suitable means, such as screws 15. 'lhe plate 18 projects outwardly beyond the outer face or thesash rail, as shown at 16, and is '-,folded back against the rail, which is preferably rabbeted, as shown at 17, to form a shoulder against which the edge of the plate bears. A sheet of rubber or other suit-able sott material, shown at 18, is a plied to the concave face ot the plate 13, its width being such that it projects beyond the forward extension 16 of the metal plate and there presents a lat face to the sill 12. The inner margin of the sheet 18 is downwardly directed by the curvature of the plate 13, so that it presents its edge to the sill. The sheet 18 is secured in place by an outer curved plate 19, which is secured in place as by screws 20 extending into the `sash rail. The width of the plate 19 is such that it does not make contact with the sill 12 at either of its edges, the contacts with the sill being only by the two margins of the sheet 18.
The construction described provides two lines oi contact of the soft material with the sill, the one adjacentthe outer face and the other adjacent the inner face of the sash rail, thus edectually excluding the weather and dust. A further advantage in the c0nstruction described is that it provides a reinforcement for the bottom of the sash rail at its outer edge. Window sills are usually inclined downwardly and outwardly and the bottom of the sash is given the same inclination. lt has been the practice to form an outwardly extending lip at the lower edge of the sash rail, and in practice difficulty has been encountered in securing an accurate dt et the sash rail to the sill and as a result this outwardly extending lip is liable to be split od". The plate 13 not only provides alproper backing for the soft or pad sheet, but it reinforces the sash rail at this weak point.
While l prefer to use rubber as the sealing material, any other soft substance, such as felt, may be employed. Both sashes of a car window may be similarly equipped with the improved guard, as shown in the drawings, and the metal plates may be given thenecessary conguration to insure a contact ot b (tlth margins of the sealing sheet with the s1 A 1 claim as my invention'- 1. A curved late adapted for attachment to the lower e ge of a window sash and to project beyond the outer; face thereof and having its outer margin recurved backwardly to 't against the outer faceof the sash, a sheet of soft material fitted to the concave tace of the metal plate and extending beyond the same at both margins, and
a curved binding plate for securing the sheet in place. v
2. A curved plate adapted for attachment 5 to the lower edge of a Window'sash and to project beyond the outer face thereof and having its outer margin recurved back.
Wardly to fit against the outer face of the sash, a sheet of soft material fitted' to and secured against the concave face of the 10 metal plate and extending to the outer margin of said plate.
