Description
V. 9. APPLE. DYNAMO ELECTRIC MACHINE. APPLIOATION FILED NOV. 27, 1908.
1,081,084, Patented Dec. 9, 1913.
: Jnunftw Z fig Mm f} UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VINCENT GROBY APPLE, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE APPLE ELECTRIC COMPANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
DYNAMO-E-LECTRIC MACHINE.
I and useful Improvements in Dynamo-ElectricManhines, of which the following is a specification. f I My invention relates to improvements in dynamo electric machines, and in many of its features is applicable to either generators or motors, but it applies especially in some of itsfeatures to self-governed electrical generators of'small size, such as are commonly employed for the generation of electric current for gas engine ignition systems, and like uses.
Among the general objects of my invention are to provide a dynamo electric machine of small size, adapted for economical construction, ease in assembling and reambryrtruufaianemer thefield ring, 5
durability, designed to produce a relatively "Ygreat output of current in proportion to its dimensions.
Other and further objects of my invention will become apparent to those sliilledinv the art from the following description taken in conjunction jwith the accompanying drawings, wherein I have illustrated a horizontal longitudinal section of an embodiment of my invention. In the preferred embodiment of m inventionwshown I rovide a multipolar ynamo, whereof 10 is t e frame, preferably a casting,
shaped as a field ring, and provided with integral interior projections which constitute the field cores, and whereof a suitable number, preferably four, are provided. Oneend of the frame 10 is reduced to an integral throat 13, axially unobstructed, and of size slightly larger than the armature intended for the machine The other end of the cast frame lO is'provided with an end opening,
and is provided withzan edge recess for ,re-: ceiving a'cap or door 15, which is preferably a drawnsheet metal cup of exterior diameter corresponding with thatof frame 10. The
cup, or door 15 is'preferably connected with the frame on each side b construction, generally in icated at 16, each in the form. of astrap hinge, whereof the two relativeel movable members 17 and 18 are connecte b a detachable pintle, or pin 19, so that eac hinge constitutes a latch I Specification'of Letters Patent.

or fastening. Obviously either pin may be withdrawn to permit the door to open either to the right hand or to the left, or both pins may be withdrawn to permit the removal of the door.
The end of the frame 10 proximate to the door is bridged by an integral supporting member or spider 21 shaped to provide a commutator space beyond the edge of the end opening, for accessibility, and arranged to support the commutator brushes and the" ers and afford convenient space for the con-,
nection of the electrical binding posts. The shaft, 26, has its inner end supported in and pro] ecting through a bushing 27 supported in the boss 25,and carries the commutator 28 and the armature 29, the former being disposed 1n the armature space bounded by the spider structure 21, and the latter being arranged his integral -boss 25 afi'ords sup-- within the body of the frame, under .the i nfluence of the field. The armature structure, field magnets and commutator may be of any suitable construction as the details thereof form no part of my present inven-" tion.
. Any of the well known types of commutator brushes ma be used.
The side walls of the extension 21 carry insulated bindingposts 38 to which are suitably wired the commutator brushes and the field co'il, exterior wiring connections being made. as required, through apertures 39 in the sides of the rigid frame 10. The throat 13 of the frame is provided with a .closure or head 40, having an inturned rim, to interfit in the throat, and a central boss 42 inwhichis fixed a bearing sleeve 13, for the outer end of the shaft 26, preferably extending inward fbeyon the head.
While I have herein described'in some detail a specific embodiment of my invention,
the construction of which I believe to be new and advantageous in many details, it will be apparent that many changes in the specific construction might be made without departure from the spirit and scope oimy invention, w thin the scope of theappended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is.
In a dynamo electric machine, asingle piece frame comprising a pole ring and a spider projecting beyond one end of said pole ring, shaped to receive within it the commutatorin position projecting beyond an edge of the pole ring for accessibility,
the armature and commutator may be 1n serted, and a detachable closure for the drivin end of the frame supporting a shaft bearing for the armature s aft.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
