To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that l, THOMAS F. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at llin chester', in the county of Clark and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Hoists; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in portable cranes, and it consists in the constructions, combinations and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a portable crane adapted for conveniently loading and unloading cars, wagons, or other vehicles.
A further object of my invention is to provide a strong and simple hoisting apparatus constructed to readily and quickly handle loads, and adapted to itself constitute a transporting vehicle.
lln the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation, illustrating one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a front end elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates uprights secured to a truck 2 and connected by longitudinal members 3 and top cross members l to constitute a strong upright frame, said frame being rigidly braced by struts 5 and braces 6.
A beam 7 depends from the cross members l and is provided with tracks 8 for a trolley carriage 9. The track beam 'Z' eX- tends rearwardly beyond the upright frame to provide sufficient reach to the crane for conveniently loading and unloading articles; said rearwardly-extending portion being firmly supported by an adjustable truss rod 10 secured to the forward frame member 4 and attached to an end plate 11 having a flange clamped beneath the lower ends of said beam by a. bolt 12. A cable, or chain, 13 extends over the sheave 111 of a block 15 carried by the trolley 9, and is anchored to said block 15 to provide a bight for receiving a pulley 16; said pulley 16 being provided with suitable means for securing the loads, such as hooks 17.
A windlass 18 is mounted on the front uprights 1 for winding and unwinding said cable 13, to raise and lower the loads and to shift the trolley 9 forwardly on its tracks 8; a cam 19 being pivotcd on said block 15 for clamping said sheave 14E to prevent raising or lowering of the load during such shifting of the trolley along its tracks 8. rlhe windlass 13 is provided with the usual actuating gearing 18a and locking` pawl 18h.
ris shown in Fig. 1, the cam 19 is adapted to be shifted into clamping engagement with the cable 13 by swinging the front end of said cam downwardly by any suitable means, suoli as a rope 20 attached thereto and leading in convenient position for operation; upon such shifting of the cam 19, the tension exerted on the cable 13 by the load tends to clamp said cam more firmly in locked position.
The trolley carriage 9 is shifted rearwardly on its tracks 8 by a cable 21 leading therefrom over guide sheaves 22, 23 and 211, and secured to a winding arbor 25 journaled at 26 on the front uprights 1; said arbor being provided with a squared end 27 for receiving an operating handle. The arbor is mounted for slight axial shifting in said bearings 26; a toothed collar 28 being secured on said arbor for shifting into locking engagement with a corresponding collar 29 secured to one of said bearings.
