LOCOMOTIVE-TENDER.
Application filed June 19, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, James B. Hoan, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in L0- comotive-'lenders; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in locomotive tenders.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a locomotive tender which includes improved means whereby the coal in the coal pit of the tender may be agitated and moved toward the forward end of the pit so that it can be readily reached by the fireman without having to enter the tender for the purpose of moving the coal forward manually said means being readily operated from the forward end of the tender.
Vith the above and other objects in view. the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detaihreference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a locomotive tender having the invention associated therewith, Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the tender Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the parts of the coal moving means in a different position from that illustrated in Fig. 2, Fig. 1, a detail perspective view of the movable element mounted with.- in the coal pit of the tender.
Referring to the drawings the tender is shown as comprising the usual wheeled bottom 10 and mounted upon this bottom is the usual U-shaped water tank which includes arm portions 11 and 12 and a bight portion 13, said arm portions 11 and 12 constituting the sides of the tender and the bight portion 13 the rear end thereof. The space between the arm portions 11 and 12 constitutes the coal pit of tender the forward end of which is closed by a removable Specification of Letters Patent.

portion 13 is inclined as at 15 and seating upon this inclined side 15 of the bight portion 13 is a trough like member A which includes a bottom 16 and parallel side members 17 and 18. The lower end of the bottom 16 of the member A terminates in a loop 19 which is engaged around a rod 20 mounted transversely of the tender in the arm portions 11 and 12 of the tank. The side members 17 and 18 of the member A lie snugly against the inner sides of the arm portions 11 and 12 respectively so as to prevent the escape of any coal to the rear of themember A during the swinging of the latter toward the forward end of the tender, it being understood that the connection between the member A and the rod 20 is such that said member is free to swing upon said rod.
Mounted at corresponding points on the arm portions 11 and 12 forward of the free end of the member A are similar journal brackets 21 and 22 respectively in which is rotatably mounted a shaft 23 having a crank 24 provided at one end whereby said shaft may be rotated manually when desired. Fixed upon the center of the shaft 23 is a drum 25 upon which is adapted to be wound a chain 26 one end of the latter being secured to the central portion of the free end of the back member 16 of the member A. This chain 26 is connected by branch chains 27 and 28 with the outer ends of the free end of the back member 16 respectively. The shaft 23 is adapted to be locked against rotation under the influence of the weight of the member A when the latter is moved away from the inclined side 15 by means of a pawl and ratchet mechanism 29.
hen the coal pit is supplied with coal the member A is in the position shown in Fig. 2. When the coal at the forward end of the coal pit has been used and it is desired to move the coal at the rear end of the pit forwardly it is only necessary to rotate the shaft 23 so as to wind the chain 26 upon the drum 25. This operation will shift the free end of the member A toward the forward end of the tender and result in forcing the coal at the rear of the pit to the for.- ward end of the latter where it may be easily shoveled by the fireman while standing in close proximity to the furnace door of the engine.
It will of course be noted that the memher A is gradually moved from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3 as the supply of coal at the forward end of the coal pit is gradually diminished. Suitably mounted upon the side portions 11 and 12 of the tank are stops 30 and 31 respectively which are adapted to be engaged by the side members 17 and 18 of the member A to limit the movement of the free end of the latter toward the forward end of the tender.

A locomotive tender having a coal pit provided with an opening to permit access to the coal and also having an uninterrupted Water compartment at the rear of the coal I it a fuel-movin member havin its lower end pivotally mounted in the coal pit at the bottom of the latter and normally resting JAMES B.
