Description

W. LUND & W. B. LLOYD.
STEERING GEAR. APPLICATION FILED P131311. 1913.
Patented Dec. 9, 1913.
Inventors Attorneys UNITED OFFI wxnmam LUND, or osjrnnmn np nnovn, or snamoxawa,
:sianiiniaam To all whom it may conc r Be it known that we, WILLIAM Lmvn and Wnamur B. Lnorn, citizens of the United States, residing at Cathlamet and Shamekaw a, respectively, in the county of Wahkiakum, State of Washington have invented a new anduscful Steering-Gear, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improminent in steering ears, the primary (-bjQct of the invention ein the provision of means whereby the slack in the steering cable may be easily adjusted and taken care of without the necessity of releasin the respective ends of the cable, such slac being removed where the coils thereof pass about the steering spool or drum.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a sectional steerin drum, in which the sections are detachab y connected together, wlwreby the same may be detached and rotated independently to increase the number of coils thereupon and thus adjust the steering cable to the desired tautness.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description Broceeds, the invention resides in the comination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter desm'ibed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without dc )arting from the spirit of the invention.
n the drawings:-Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the sectional steering drum with parts in interlocked position. Fig. 2 is an end view of the inner drum taken from the locking side thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail end views ofthe outer drum. Fig. 5 is a plan view taken from the inner face of the steering wheel.
Referring to the drawin the numeral 1 designates a spindle w ich is fixedly mounted and has secured upon its outer,
screw-threaded end the lock nut 8, which maintains the steering wheel 4 a inst outward displacement yet ermits t e rotation thereof upon the spin le 1,"said steerin wheel being inwardly pro ectingxpins 5,.W posed to fi within t e sockets 6 in the outer ace of the outer steemngdrum'or spool 7,
ch are 'disseen that the coils 1 provided with ahplurality' -o sals -as merid an ,-.Patented Dec. 9, 1913. Application tiled February llyfSlB-y Serial No; 747,528
thus the s 001.7 isheld interlocked for retation-wit -'the steering wheel 4.
; The'inner face of thespool '7 is provided with the radiating slots 8,"wh1ch are disposed to receive t radiating lugs or proections 9 of the inner drum or spool 10, the opposite end of the spool 10 being rovidcd with the concentric socket 11 for t e reception 0fthe spring 12, which is disposed upon the spindle 1 ad acent the socket 11 and has its op csite end fitted within the socket 13 of t e securing bracket which properly supports the steerm mechanism, as clearly-shown in Fi 1. it will thus be of the steering cable are wound upon the respective spools 7 and 10, and that by reason of the s ring 12 and interlocking means 8 and 9, an 4 and 6, these s ools or drums are connected to be rotated t rough the medium of the steering wheel 4. Should the coils 14 be slackened due to the stretchin of the rope, the section 10 is moved tower and against the tension of the spring 12, until the ribs or lugs 9 are moved from the sockets 8 of the spool 7 at which time the spool 10 is rotated in the desired direction to place thereupon the necessary amount of the cable to roduce the desired tautness therein, or if esired the spool 7 may be rotated in an opposite direction from the spool 10, thereupon 1placing the slack of the cable evenly u on t e respective s ools 7 and 10. After he cable has been tightened, the s 001 10 is released and the spring 12 will maintain both a ools interlocked.
From the foregoing escription, it is evident that with a steering gear constructed according to the present invention, that the wheel 4 through the medium of the interlocking means 5 and 6, and 8 and 9, and the'sprlng 12, produces the desired method of rotation in spools 7 and 10, and that by reason of the said connection the spools may be separated and adjusted to remove the slack from the cable, without the necessity of detaching the ends of the cable from the rudder post or rudder gear, thus placing at the command of the ilot the adjustment of the cable and dispensing with the tedious and trying operations necessary to usually ti hten the same especially where such cab as are throu h intricate passageways from the steering w eel to the rudder.
It also evldent by the simple removal of the cap nut 3 that the various parts of the steering device may be removed from the spindle 1, for renewal or repair and Without to any great extent interfering with the coiling of the cable upon the spool. 7
What is claimed is l. A steering gear including a spindle, a socketed support for one end of the spindle, a Wheel mounted upon the spindle for rotation, two detachable and interlocking spools detachably connected to the wheel, the inner end of the inner spool being disposed to move into and out of the socket of the support, and a spring disposed within the socket of the support about the spindle and abutting the inner spool for holding the spools interlocked and whereby the sections may be disconnected and the spools rotated inde pendentlyto remove the slack in the steerin'g cable. a
2. A steering gear, including a stationary socketed base, a fixed spindle, having one end secured in the base, a Wheel controlled spool rotatably mounted on the spindle, a second spool slidably and rotatably mounted on the spindle, the face of the first spool adjacent the second spoolbeing provided with radial slots, a lurality of radial ribs carried by the second spool for engagement with the slots of the first spool to lock the spools for movement in unison, and a spring mounted within the socket of the base and upon the spindle and exerting a pressure upon the second spool to maintain the spools interlocked and to permit the innerkspool to be moved longitudinally to separate the spools for independent rotation.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
