Description

JOHN E. slnlfrnfi'mo1 CHARLES L.
- wntdtotw otwt tjfj,
sM-ITH, OE .so UTH ,DEDH'A M, 'MAssAoHU-f SETTS. ,j i i Letters Patent N0.'1o8,o80, dfed otoberzi, ,1870.
IMPROyEMENfITANlNs-VATS.
i The Scheiile 4rei'erred to''in'fthe e Letters lf'atentan making part of the same.
i i We, Jo'mvn. 8mm :ma oniite sam, tfh of South Dedham, in the couutvofih'orfolk and,` State of` Massachusetts,` have invented' certain Improvements'ln Tanningl-Vats, of which the ,following is a specification; i H
i 'Figuife 1 plan view of-four invention; i Flgm'e'2 is alseetion through-line x x, fig; 1 and This invention` relates to that class 1o ftanning-vats4 wheren the ``hides are sspended vertic-allyin I[he liquid from racks at Vthe top of the vat.`
\ i .Its object is lto agitate thet-annin while the opera tion is'gong ,on,' in `order` to` distribute ,its strength equally aroundfall parts of the hidesf, and prevent any 'deposit'at't-he `'bottom of 'the vat *to which end, we
employ a horizontal wheel, located at or near' the bottom ot' the vat, and revolved, by means. of suitable ``gearing,=iusuch manneras tofiagitate the tannin and throw it 'upward centrifugally.` i v The details of construction and method of operatiori will be more fully (lescribed hereinafter.
In"tl1e`drawing o i i A represents the vat, which is `mounted on legs a and provided on the inside with the triangnlar projec-` tions B, inclined'plates B',`and, near the bottoni, with the slats O. i
`Below the slats O, and journaled in the center of lthe hottom'of the i-'at`A, is -thc horizontal fwheel D, -whichnearly covers' the bottom of said vat, and is opl erated by the bevel-gearing E F and crank G.
' Between the inolined plates B' and the adjaoent sides of -vat'A are spaces or channels H. i l The operation of our invention is as follows:
The vat A is filled with tannin, the hides beingsnspended froin suitable raehs from above, and prevented `from `coming in contact with the wheel D by the slats 0, While the ltannin enters'the space around said wheel.
The projections B and plat'es Bfiterminate above :wheel I),v-and between'the sides B' arid thewalls of vat A are the Channels H, as above described.
Motion being imparted tol the wheel D, thetannin i will be thrown outward centrifu'gally, andrpress against the sides' of the vat A and bases of the projectious B;
and when the nlotion of the wheelis sufficiently rapid,
this pressure will force z the liquid npward, through* Channels H, over the tops of plates B' into the upper part of the vat, and against the hides snspended therein, thu creating aV constant current, and-subjecting the entire surfaces of the liides to the uniform action of the liquid.
Having thus fully' described onr'invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent, is--' z i 1. Providing a tanning-vat with a horizontal re'- volving wheel, near its bottom, as and for the purpose set forth.`
2. The ,combination of wheel D with the vat A, triangular projections B,`and inclined plates B', substantially as set forth.
f In testimony whereof, wehave signed our names to this lspecification in the presence of 'two subscribing' OROLL D. WRIGHT, CHARLES F. BROWN.
