AUNIE l' MARK G. MELVIN, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2,1913.
Application filed March 7, 1913. Serial No. 752,749.
To all whomy @'15 may concern:
Be it known that I, Mann G. MnLvIN, a citizen of the United States. residing` at Scranton7 in the county ot' Lackawanna and State ot Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Iloods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved hood for use in the root' oli a railway station to afford a vent for the escape ot` smoke and steam from the smoke stacks ot the locomotives under the root' and to also prevent rain and snow from entering, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:-I1`igure l is a perspective view of a portion of a railway station provided with hoods con structed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical longitudinal sectional view ot' the same. Fig. l is a detail transverse sectional view, showing a modified form of the hood.
In accordance with my invention, the root' l of a railway station which may be otherwise of any suitable construction, is provided with a longitudinal opening 2 of suitable width above the center of each track so that the upper end of the smoke stack of a locomotive on that track will loe directly under the said opening and the latter will atl'ord vent for the steam and smoke from the locomotive and, hence, prevent steam and smoke from being dispersed throughout the station under the roo't. In order to prevent rain from entering the said opening, I provide a hood 3 which is coextensive in length with the said opening and is placed on the roof at a point immediately above the opening, the walls of the hood, indicated at 4, having outturned base flanges 5, which bear on the root' and are secured thereto as by means ot' suitable screws or bolts 6. The upper portion of the hood is bent or deflected to one side as at 7 to form the mouth of the hood and cause the smoke and steam from the locomotive to be discharged into the air and also to prevent rain from entering the hood, and hence, finding its way down through the opening 2,
rlhe hood is provided at suitable points with braces 8 between its walls and is also provided at its mouth with doors or lflaps E) which are hingedly mounted as at l0, at points near their upper sides and which by gravity dispose themselves in vertical closed position so that ordinarily the mouth ot the hood is closed at all points. The pivotal axes of the doors or [laps of the mouth ot the hood are somewhat below the extreme upper sides of the said doors orllaps so that the latter are rendered sensitive to pressure from within and, hence, the doors or l'laps which are near a locomotive smoke stack under the roof will be caused to open by the pressure ol" the escaping steam and smoke from the locomotive and, hence, afford vent therefor. lVliile these doors or flaps are free to swing outwardly to afford vent for the smoke and steam from a locomotive, they are prevented by suitable stops 1l from swinging inwardly and, hence, are normally closed. The rootI is, in p `actice, provided with suitable spouts 12 in depressed portions to carry ott the rain water.
Thilo I have herein shown and described a. preferred form of the invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made .in the form, proportion and construction oil the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim l. A train shed root' having a longitudinal opening above the track and a hood extending up from said opening and having a laterally deflected discharge portion and flaps in the discharge portion ol the hood opening to pressure from within and closing to pressure from without.
2. A train shed root having an opening above the track and also having a hood eX- tending upwardly from said opening and provided with flaps opening to pressure from within and closing to pressure from without.
3. A train shed roof having an opening In testimony whereof I affix my signature above the track and also provided with a in presence of two Witnesses. hood extending up from said opening, Jche said hood having side Walls provided with MARK G' MELVN' base flanges bearing on the roof on opposite Witnesses:
sides of the opening and also having a lat- JOHN T. SWAGG, ei'ally extending discharge mouth. Gr. H. MANGAN.
