UNITED STATES PAETENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER HENDRY AND MALCOLM ALLAN HENDRY, 0F BRIDGETON, GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
DRIVING-BELT.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALEXANDER Hnnnn and MALCOLM ALLAN HENDRY, both subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residents of Bridgeton, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Driving-Belts, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to driving belts, but more particularly to that type known as laminated belts which are built or made up of a plurality of sections.
The object of our invention is to improve the efficiency of belts of the above general class and to produce the same at a low cost.
According to our improved method we take two or more strands of leather and build them up in continuous sections; and attach them together by one or more rows of longitudinal stitches of thread. The edges of the sections or long lengths of stitched strands are then beveled and then these lengths are stretched and then they are built up in parallel lengths and secured by transverse rows of stitching in the usual manner.
In order that our said invention and the manner of carrying the same into effect or practice may be properly understood we have hereunto appended one sheet of explanatory drawings in which the various figures illustrate the successive stages of our improved method of manufacturing belts of the laminated class.
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively elevations at right angles to each other of a single short strand of leather and illustrates the first stage of our improved method. Figs. 3 and 4t are similar views but showing a number of short strands connected together and illustrating the second stage. Fig. 5, which is a transverse sectional elevation of Fig. 3, illustrates the third stage. Fig. 6, which is a view similar to Fig. l, illustrates the fourth and fifth stages. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but shows the improved product or a belt manufactured according to our inn proved method.
Referring to these drawings: As illus trated by Figs. 1 and 2 short strands a of leather, which may be of varying thicknesses, are formed with scar-fed or angled ends b which as shown by Figs. 3 and t are Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 14, 1911.
Patented Dec. 2, 1913.
Serial No. 602,544.
spliced together in two layers 0, (Z, so that the scarfed ends I) all run the same way while being passed through a sewing machine in the direction of arrow A so that the whole gets bound together into one length by a central row of longitudinal stitching c as shown by Fig. 4. The edges of this length of stitched strands are then beveled as shown by the dotted lines f in Fig. 5. The length of strands is then passed through the sewing machine to receive a second row of longitudinal stitching 9 (Fig. 6) and if desired may be passed through a third time to receive a third row of stitching it indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 6. These long lengths of stitched strands are then stretched then pierced or punched with holes 2'- (Fig. 6) at spaced distances apart and built up in parallel lengths and secured by a transverse row of stitching 9' (Fig. 7) in the usual manner. By this method of manufacture an improved product will be obtained giving great strength and flexibility, at a minimum cost of material and workmanship.
hat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A driving belt comprising a series of lengths of leather contacting in a laminated state and transversely stitched together, each of said lengths being composed of a plurality of short sections secured together by stitching, said latter stitching being at either side of the middle of the width of each of said lengths.
2. A driving belt comprising a series of lengths of leather contacting in a laminated state and transversely stitched together, each of said lengths being composed of a plurality of short sections secured together by stitching, said latter stitching being at both sides of the middle of the width of each of said lengths.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALEXANDER IIENDRY. MALCOLM ALLAN IIENDRY.
