TOOL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 25, 1913.
Patented l) ec. 2, 1913.
Serial No. 763,655.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, ACHILLE Co'Uso'r, a citizen of the Swiss Confederacy, and resident of Geneva, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders, of which the following is a specilication.
The present invention relates to a device for firmly maintaining in their holders helical metal turning tools taken in the bar of the class described in the application, No. (371,436, led January 16, 1912, and the improvements consist in the arrangement of the various parts maintaining the tool within the holder, viz: The packing piece is interposed between the tool and the clamping screw, the lower slotted portion of the tool holder on which portion bears the tool is removed frein its holder and the special arrangement ot its spring for readily moving or replacing said packing piece.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the tool holder showing the tool and the various clamping devices for maintaining said tool. Fig. 2 is a similar section of the tool holder provided with a spring, all remaining parts being removed. Fig. 3 is a side view of the packing piece. Fig. 4 is a section on line iv-B of Fig. 3.
rl`he tool 1, is engaged in a holder' 7c, and secured in position by means of a clamping screw o, bearing against the packing piece a, which is under the action of a spring m.
The packing piece is trapezoidal and provided with a semi-eircular, projecting lug Z). Said lug b, is located in a corresponding groove b, provided in the body of the tool holder 7e, and works as a hinge and prevents the forward sliding motion of the packing piece when the tool is removed from the holder. The front face o, of the packing piece a, may be inclined so that the cuttings may freely roll up, but this feature is not needful in all cases, and said front face 0, may be straight. The lower portion of the packing piece a, is slightly curved at c, in order to provide a convenient resiliency and prevent the screw o from becoming damaged when the workman operates same too suddenly.
The two lower surfaces e and Z of the packing piece a, are worked so as to it exactly the corresponding surfaces of the tool, in order to provide a positive clamping over a large surface. The tool holder is provided with an are-shaped hollow la, so that two clamping sx'lriaces f and f/ having the shape ol the tool are provided in frontI of the clamping surilaces c and (Z of the packing piece (l. rlhe last piece is also provided with a slot in, (Figs. 1, 3 and 1) extending -from the upper rear portion of the projection Z) to the lower arc-shaped portion c. rlhe depth o't said slot It (F ig. 4l) is such that the spring m slides without dilliculty alongside the inclined portion of the slot. The packing piece a. is withdrawn, the spring m strikes the lower front of each ol5 the grooves b, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the end ot' said spring is free. The packing piece a. (Fig. 3) is ready for being slid into the tool holder. lVhen intro ducing the packing piece, the inclined edge ol the slot fn, bears against the tree end of the spring m and said piece may readily slide in the desired position shown in Fig. 1.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device for removably securing in its holder a metal turning tool, comprising a 'centrally slotted tool holder, a tool engaged in the slot of said holder', a hollow at one end ot said holder and opening in the central slot of saine, a removable packing piece fitting said hollow, means provided at said packing piece and said holder lier hingedly and resiliently connecting said packing piece with said tool holder, and means for firmly maintaining said tool between said packing piece and said holder.
2. A device for removably securing in its holder a metal turning tool, comprising a centrally slotted tool holder, a trapezoidal hollow at one end of said holder and opening in the central slot of said holder, a removable trapezoidal packing piece fitting said hollow, a semicircular projecting lng at one 02E the upper edges oil said packing piece, a correspondingly shaped groove pro* vided on said holder 'for receiving said lug7 a threaded bore on said holder and opening in said trapezoidal hollow, a clamping screw engaging said bore and hearing against said packing piece, arc-shaped hollows provided at the lower sui-:tace oit said packing piece and at the slotted surlace oi said holder, ground out surfaces on both sides of each of said arc-shaped hollows for exactly itting and pressing the adjacent portions of said tool when the Clamping screw is opn testimony whereof I have hereunto set erated, a tiiangular slot at one side of the my hand in presence of two Witnesses. near end o said trapezoidal packing piece,
and a spring secured on said holder and ACHILLE COUSOT bearing against the edge of said triangular `Witnessesz slot, in order to maintain said packing piece P. PICUDE,
when the tool is removed from its holder. E. PETRY.
