This invention relates .to electrical devices, and particularly to the plug' members of the quick connecting type of plug and socket couplings for electric circuits. but is not restricted to suchuse as it may be used in anyconnection for .which it may be adapted or` appropriate.

One` of the ,lead-in wires 15, 1G, which enter the base portion of the socket 5 thro-ugh an opening 17 in the outer end of the body part 3 of the plug member, extends into the recess of the plunger over the contact strip 1.1 and is clamped to the latter by a binding screw 1S. The other lead-in Wire is projected, in the present instance, through a longitudinal passage -19 in the plunger and has its free end engaged to a contact screw or part 20 which `is disposed centrally of the outer end of the plunger in position to have contact with the contact part l o f the socket member A. when the plug member is inserted therein, as shown in Fig. 3.
If desired the outer end portion of the vbody part 3 of the plug member may have a ferrule 21 of metal or other suitable material fitted therearound to provide a smooth wearing surface for contact with the lining the socket member A. This ferrule is not intended, however, to form any part of the electric circuit as the electrical contact between the plug member and the lining 2 of the socket is through the contact pai-t 13 with which one of the lead- iii wires 15, 16 is connected. The ferrule 2,1has openings'or notches therein iii register with the notch let and opening 20 of the body part 3 of the plug member.
The means employed, in the present instance, for securing the members A and B of the coupling together, when inserted one within the other. comprises a ball or locking part 22, which is mount-ed in an opening in the wall of the plug socket 5 and is adapt ed to have its inner end project within'tlie socket 5 and to work in a registering long itudinal groove or channel 23 iii the plunger- 5 `when the outer side of the ball or part 22 is substantially flush with the outer periphery of the socket wall. lVhen the plug member is forced into the socket member and the contact end of the plunger 4 has contact with the part 1 of the socket member, said plunger is depressed within the socket 5 of the plug and a raised surface 211 at the outer end of the groove 23 moves into' contact with the ball or part 22 and forces it outward into engagement with a register ing spiral groove in the lining 2 of the socket member. The imparting of a slight turning movement in clockwise direction to the plug member B after the part 22 has been projected into thread engaging posi-v tion .causes a tightening together of the coupling members. The raised surface 24 is referably composed of metal or other hard surface to prevent a wearing of said surface when the part 22is in thrust contact therewith. It is evident with this form of l meegaat coupling that the' twocontact parts 11 and -20 of the plug member are carried by the plunger 4 of such member for movements therewith, and that the closing of tliecircuit through the coupling members is not dependent upon the making of contact with the socket lining 2 by a part carried by the body 3 of the plug orby the retaining parts v which serve to couple the two members of the'coupling together. It is preferable in theassembling /of the plugl members to dispose the coupling means 22-24 at the opposite 'side o-f the plug to the contact part 11 so that the outward forcing of the coupling part 22 into engagement with the socket lining 2 will effect a forced Contact of the part 11 with such lining.

Having thus described our invention,
what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is-
1. A coupling for helectric circuits comprising a socket member having separate contact parts and a plug member, said plug member having two sections which ai'e rela.- tivelv movable upon an insertion' thereof iiitothe 'socket member, one of said sections carrying a pair of contact parts for contact with the respect-ive Contact parts of the socket member when inserted therein, and means separate from said contact parts and automatically operable by a relative movenient of the plug member sections when inserted within the socket member to hold the two members in coupled relation.
2. A coupling for electric circuits com. prising a socketv memberhaving separate contact paar-ts and a plug member, said plug member having sections which are relatively movable upon an insertion of the -plug apredetermined extent into the socket member, contacts carried by the plug `member for contact. with the respect-ive contact parts of the socket member when the plug'is in.l serted ltherein, and means .separate from said contact parts and automatically -operable by a relative movement of the plug sections when inserted into the socket member to hold the two members in coupled relation.
3; in a coupling of the class described, a plug member having a socketed portion and a plunger mounted in said socketed portion, a conductor element having a portion countersunk in the plunger and a portion which is radially otlset relative to the plunger to forni a contact partfor side contact with thewall of a socket member into which the plug may be inserted.
4. In a coupling of the class described, a plug member having a socketed body part with a recess in the outer end portion ot the socket: Wall, a plunger longitudinally morable in Said socket, :1 contact part fixed to 'said plunger and prop-acting?r through said recess and a. separate contact part carried by said plunger.
