TO IDE'lIIitOIEII CAN COMPANY, OE DETROIT, MIQH IGAN',

n conronarlon or new PACKAGE-CAPPING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, Jnnvis R. HARBEQK, a citizen oft-he United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-(lapping Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying. drawings;
The invention. relates to .machines for capping. packages, and. is more particularly designed. for use in connection with paper packages. v
' The invention consistsin the,construct1on as hereinafter. set forth.
In the drawings Figure. 1 is a vertlcal section through the machine; Fig, .2 is. a
plan view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to a portion ofFig, 1,.showing the parts in different positions.
The paper packages which. are" to be. capped are usually constructed with cylindrical body portions, and the caps are pro vided. with depending flanges, which closely fit. said cylindrical bodies. On account of the flexible nature of. the material, it is a somewhat difiicult operation to engage the cap flange with the body, and. I have therefore devised a machine for performing this operation, constructed as follows:
A is an expansihle annular guide preferably'constructed of aseries of guide fingers B pivotally mounted at C upon an annular frame or. support. D. Each of. the. guide fingers B is provided with a thin 3 plate E at its outer end adapted to be inserted within the flange of the cap, and forming a guide for directing. the. upper edge of the body of the package into engag'ement with said cap. The fingers B may be adjusted in normal position by means of set screws F engaging bell crank arms. .G
extending laterally from the pivots. There are also provided springs 'H, which yield ingly hold said bell crank arms against the stop screws F.
The ring D is mounted upon a suitable frame, such as the bed ortable I, having upward extensions J thereon. K is a plunger having a shank L vertically adjustably secured ina bearing M .upon the frame. This plunger is axially alined with the annular guide A, and is operated by suitable mechanism, such as the pinion N,

,en aging a rack inthe shank L and; the. Qrac and'pinion O and P for actuatingthe ishaft Q on which the pinion N is mounted. IR is a foot lever connected with the rack O. gand adapted when depressed to raise the. 'shank L and plunger plunger K in normal. position issufliciently gbelow the. annular. frame D to permit; of; iplacing thereon the filled-package, such as S. :The cap for this'package is placed withits fflange surrounding the guide fingers B. and. Y
jgthese are so positionedby proper. adjust; ;ment ofithe stops F'that' the flange maybe iengaged therewith without difliculty. The. operator then depresses the pedal R, which Eraises the plunger. K, forcing the package;
upward through the annular frame-D and; Eexpansible guide A. 'During. this upward.
Emovement, the upper edge of the package iwill come in contact with the-,guidefingers; iIn so doing, the thin plates E. will; ,force. outward the flange of the cap, so. as to per,
0 rected therein. The continued upward .movement of' the plunger will force. the cap and raise the package until nearly disengaged from the expansible guide. The op:
gagement with the guide, and drop the;
; plunger ready for another operation.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A. package cappingmachine, comprising anannulus, a series of guide fingers pivotally mounted thereon and each provided with a thin plate at its upper end, ad justable stops for positioning. said fingers,
With the construction as. described, the.
dy to be die and resilient means for yieldably holding said fingers against said stops, for. the purdescribed';
2; Aflpackage capping machine, comprising an annulus, a series of guide fingers pivotally mounted upon said annulus and having thin plates at their upper ends, outwardly-extending' bell crank arms on said guide fingers, set screws forming adjustable stops for said bell crank arms, and springs for yieldingly holding said bell crank arms against said stops, for the purpose describ 3. A package capping machine comprising an expansible annular guide insertible withfecting a relative vertical movement between the support and the guide to force the body of the package through the guide intoengagement with the cap.
5. A package capping machine, comprising an upright expansi'ble annular guide insertible within the flange of the cap, the latter being sup-ported solely by the upper end of. said guide, a support for the package in axial alinement with the guide, and means for relatively moving said support and guide toward each other m a substantiall rectilinear path to force saidpackage t ough the guide and into engagement with the cap.
6. A package capping machine, comprising an upright expansible annular guide having a thln edge insertible within the flange of the cap and formingthe sole support for the latter, a vertically arranged support for the package, and means for relatively movsaid support and guide toward each 0t er in a substantially rectilinear path to force the package through the guide and into engagement with the cap.
7. In a package capping machine, a combined guide and support for the cap, comprising an annular series of movable guide fingers insertible within the flange of the cap and adapted to support the latter during the capping operation, and yielding means acting upon the fingers to press the same inward.
8. In a package capping machine, a combined guide and support for the cap, compgising an annular series of movable guide gers insertible within the flange of the cap and adapted to support the latter during the capping operation, stops for positioning said fingers, and resilient means for holding the fingers against the stops.
9. In a packa e capping machine, a combined guide an support for the cap, comprising an annular series of movable fingers insertible within the flange of the cap and adapted to support the latter during the capping operation, means for limiting the inward movement of the fingers, and yielding means for normally retaining the fingers at the limit of their inward movement.
10. A package capping machine, comprising an upright expansible annular guide insertible within the flange of the cap, the latter being supported by the upper end of said guide, and means for forcin the body of the package through said gui e into engagement with the cap adapted upon a 7 further movement to eflect the lifting of the cap from the guide by thepackage.
11. A package capping machine comprising an upright expanslble annular guide having a thin edge insertible within the flange in the cap and forming the sole support for the latter, a vertically arranged support for the package, and means for relatively, moving said, support and guide to force the package through the guide and into engagement with the cap, said means being adapted upon a further movement to effect the disengagement of the cap from the guide.
12. A package capping machine comprising an expansible annular guide insertible within the flange of the cap, a support for the package in axial alinement with the guide, and means for relatively moving said support and guide toward each other in a substantially rectilinear ath to force said package through the gui e and into engagewith the cap adapted upon a further movement to efl'ect the disengagement of the cap from the guide by the package.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
