Letters Patent No, 108,025, dated October 4, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT m eEER-FAuceT s.
The Schedule referred to 'in these Letters Patent and making part oi the same.
' i G K fOF'NCW Orleaus, Louisiana-,
have inventedfa certain ImprOvement in Beer-Faucets, of which-thefollowingis a specification.
My improvement-consists of the combinationof an air-pump, of peculiar construction,-with wheel aueet" that is so contrived as tobe equally adapted toa direct connection with the beer-holder, or to the end of a pipe of gutta-pereha, whielrpasses througha refrigerator,
i which it is coiled, with thelview of cooling the beer,
I after itfleavesthe-holderorreserroir.
- The object of myinvcntion is the instantaneous pro-- duction of foam, after the same has been condensed by the application voftice orcold, orthe beeris, forany reason, in that condition r technically called fiatfor without foam but my invention willbe better underb-stood by referring to the drawing, on whichp ,Fignrel is a side view-of it in complete form, ex
1 'cept that a part, of the barrel of the air-pump is brokenfaway, to show the plunger orpiston-head, and
Figure 2,,a detached View of the perforated diaphragm in the/pump, at t thepoint indicatedby the dotted line a b on fig. 1.
On the drawing--' t A is a representation of the air-pump, and
the' plunger-head,firmly secured onthe lowerend of the plunger-rod 0,;while at the upper-end of thisrod a handle, D, is permanentlysecured.
There is no novelty aboutany part of the plunger,
i and I need not say more about it than that its head must be so constructedasvto receive and hold in place a packing of auysuitahle air-tight material.-
At about the point shown onthedrawing the bar.-
rel A ofthe pump is provided with a short elbow-section, E, in the end ot' which is cuta female screwa )thread, .to receive the male, screw F o'nthe outer end i y of the barrel G of the faucet, and thus tosecure the t conneetion of the pump with thefaucet.
jTo make the 'joint perfectly tight, .I may insert a- 'smallannular washerbetween the end of the faucet and a ritnjinthe elbow E,- near its intersection with perforateddiaphrflgm, I, is inserted in' the barrel A, in order to provide for an admission of airwithin said barrel whenever the plunger is drawn toward the top cock, J,-as shown, a little distancebackgof its connection with the air-pump, and 'atits end with, a
screw-thread, to connect it directly with the beerholder'or'with a supplementalpart, K, to receive, by
means of a screw-thread,'-L, over it, theend of agutta-percha' tithe, for conveying the beer from the;
,holder through a refrigerator, wherein a considerable extent of said tube is coiled,in order to cool a sufli cient quantity of the beer to supply the demand for it at any one time. p
Inthe winter season, or whenever the natural temperature or climate ,is suificiently low'to prevent foaming, the faucet. can be screwed directly inthev reservoir in which it is kept, whatever the nature ofthe vessel may be; but whenever the natural-temperature.
is sufiic-iently highto produce active foaming, or too much warmth to make thebeer an-agreeable drink, it is necessary to use a tube, and, therefore, the supplemental part K, in order to client refrigeratiom'and hence it is that I consider said supplemental part'a necessary integer of my improvement.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
, \Vhencveyfrom any cause, thebeer flows out withoutsufiicient foan'i or head, the air-pump is putin active motion, and, drawing up air through the perforated diaphragm, at every upstroke, forees'the same into the-,becr, as it runs out, at every downward stroke,,andthus produces an instantaneous foamingof the same to any desiredexteilt.
, 'lhe pump is worked by.hand, and 1 have, found.
that it will not only cause the beer to foam 'as His drawn, but that, it worked rapidly, it will even force air 'into the holder in sufficient. quantity to lnduee foaming there also.
The barrel G of the faucet is provided with a stop The arrangement, herein described, of the' removable air-pump A, faucet G, and removable coupling K, when said air-pump is provided with perforated diaphragm, I and female screw-thread E, and saidfaucet'hasa male screw-thread, F, substantially as speci tied. v w
