f .T an 050m concern:
Be' itv known ,that` we, SIMON G. 'Rossancl- FRANK B. FREEMAN, citieenspof-the United vented certain new and' useful: Improvements in'Skiving-Machines; andwe do' hereby de-fi Clare `the 'following to be a full, clear, and
f exact descriptionofthe invention, suchas g-"adapted vfor use in reducing thethickness of.
.will enable others` skilled in the art to which uit alppertains to make andI use the same;
The invention relates toa skivin -machine [the projecting edge of the lsole'of a; boot or .shoe to give the sole a' lighte'r or' thinner appearance," 4.
'l 'l ,It has been customary heretofore tof-reduce the thickness of the projecting' edge of' .thegshank portion of the shoe sole in forme fing` light edge shanks by machines adapted to skive the outer 'edge of the 'welt of a welted shoe after the welti'has'been attached' to' theupper- -and insole, either 4beforethe outsole has been applied to the shoe, or after the outsol'ehas been laid onthe shoe, but bec fore the outsole and welt have` been secured.
.together VIn either 'case the skivi'ng of the v'lower' edge of the weltV results in anincrease'v vin the distance of the projecting edge'of the completed sole fromthe `.upper when the welt `and outsole have beenaunited by the outseam, so that the leveling yof' the sole'to se- .curel a close shank is rendered more di-icult.
,It is-the object of the'prfesen't invention to provide a machine for reducing' the .thickness of the'projecting edge of the shoe v.sole
tov form a thin edge' shank 'by removing a skiving from the lower edge ofv the -outsole' outside of--the channel vflap, thus' enabling a close shank to be more easily and uniformly producedby the subsequent levelingoperation. l l l t It is also the object of .the invention to .provide a'skiving machine which may be utilized in removing a skivlng from the outer edge of the outsole around the forepart ofv'a shoe to produce a light edgesole around this part of the shoe'.
To these ends one 1feature of the invention contemplates the provision infa machine provided-with ,a 'skiving knife arranged to. re.- move a skiving from the lower outeredge of the sole' of'ash'oe', and with a lwork supeport and feed roll arrangedt-o engage the.'
=jupper and' lowerr side of the projecting edge of' the sole, of a; guard arranged tolie loe-A tween the feed wheel andchannel' fiapf.- The a'rrangemerzy of the' ard between the feed wheel and channel-"gu he so guided that the skiving knife may outl close up tothe face of the channelflap' without dangerof injury thereto in .operating uporr the soles before the outsole Iand welt have been' unitedv by the outseam, and also fenabl'esthe shoe to be so 'guided-that the :skrvmgknife'may cut close up to the outseam without danger-of injury thereto, in
leasev theV machine 4is used to skive the edge of the outsole after .the outsole and welt have been secured together by the butseam. This guard referred to is preferably-arranged to engage the outsole channel, and .when so' arranged acts as a gage to determine the depth to which'the teeth of the feed wheel may penetra-tev thework'.l and also to determine the thickness of the skivin-gwhich shall be remo-ved by the skiving knife.
The provision of such a gage for engaging the lower side of the solein a machine for skiving the lower outer edge of the sole of a shoe,-constitutes. aA further-feature of forA protecting the channel flapI or4 outseam.
A further featureoffth'e invention contemplates the provision in a machine for skiving ,the lower outer edge ofl the sole of a shoe, ofa gage for guiding the shoe by 'engagement with the channel flap. The provision of this gage enables uniform ski'ving to be readily removed' from the lower outer edges ofthe soles'around the' lforeparts of shoes v provided with extension edge soles, and also assists' the operator in properly- 'guiding the shoe when operating upon the Shanks of shoesglt is referred to employ the guard above referred to as the gage for guiding" the shoe by engagement 'with the channel flap, althoughthisV is not essential ,to this feature of the invention in its broader aspects. Y'
In addition to the' features of invention above referred to, the invention also -in cludes certain devices, vcombinations and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed, the advanskilled in Athe art.
the invention', and Ait is notmaterial to thisv feature whether the gage also acts as a guard i PatentedDeo. 2, 1913.
ap enables the shoef to The various features of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying the various features of the invention in their preferred forms; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the machine shown in Fig. 1; Fig. Slis a front elevation;v Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional detail through the axis of the feed roll'and work support; andFig. 5 is a detail View o f the skiving knife.
In the machine shown in the drawings,
Vthis u per side of the projecting edge of the .so e
. work support is also so shaped that it may enter the crease between the upper and the projecting edge of thesole, and'act not only as a work support for supporting the sole in position -to be acted upon by the skiving knife, but also act as a gage for guiding the shoe by engagement` withthe last or inseam.
The Work support is continuously driven' through beveled gearing 5 connecting the work support with a shaft 6 which is mounted in fixed bearings in the frame of the machine. The shaft 6 is driven from the main i driving shaft 7 through a Vgear 8 secured t o the main driving shaft, and engaging a gear 9-secured to the shaft 6.
The feed roll 2 is secured upon the front end of a shaft 10, and is continuously driven Y in a directionto cooperate with the work support 1 through gearing 11 connecting the shaft 6 with the shaft 10. The feed roll shaft 10 ismounted in a vertically movable head 12, the rear end of which is pivotally supported at 13 upon the frame of the .machine, and the front end ofwhich is guided in a vertical guideway llivformed in they frame. `The feed roll is forced yieldingly toward the work support so that it may accommodate itself to variations in the'thickness of the sole by a spring 15 surrounding a rod 16, the upper end o f which is pivotally connected to the head 12. The rod 16 passes through al lug 17 on the frame of the machine, and the spring is interposed between this .lug and a collar 18 secured tothe rod. 'The movement of the feed roll toward the Work support is limited by a stop screw 19 which is threaded through a split lug 2O on.
the head 12, and is arranged' to engage a fixed lug 21 'on the frame of the machine.
By `adjusting the 'stop screw, the relative position of the work `supjooz't'and feed roll. may be adjusted in accordance with the thickness of the soles being operated upon; A treadle (not shown) is connected to the lower end of the rod 16 s'o that the operator -may conveniently separate the feed roll and tained in xed relation to the feed roll regardless of variations in the thickness of the sole being operated upon.
In order that the skiving knife niayoperate properly toremove the desired skiving from the lower edge of the outsole. without danger of injury to the 'channel flap or to the outseain, a guard 22 is provided which is arranged to lie between the feed roll and the channel flap, and thus prevent the inadvertent guiding of the shoe in a manner to injure the channel iiap, or to bring the outseam into position to be acted upon by the skiving knife. In order that the guard may be located to enable the skiving cutter to cut close up to the channel flap'. pr any desired distance from the channel iiap, the guard is so mounted that it may be adjusted transversely of the line of feed. In the construction shown, the guard is formed on the outer end of an arm 23, the rear end of which is secured Ito the adjustable slide 23"- by abolt 24 which passes through a slot formed in the slide. By thus mounting the guard it may be adjusted to vary its position with relation to the feed wheel 2 and with relation to theknife, so that the skiving knife may cut at any desireld distance from the channel fiap 'when the guardis in engagement with the flap. The adjustments also enable the guard to be so adjusted that it may beutilized as a gage for guiding the work by engagement with the channel flap, and may thus cooperate with the crease gage formed by the work support in guiding the work when skiving the sole through the shank, or may act as a gage for guiding the work by engagement with the channel fiap in utilizing the machine to skive the lower .l edge of the sole around the forepart.
ince the guard 22 is secured to the head 12, which alsol carries the feed roll and skiving'knife, the lower edge of the guard is maintained in xed relation to the feed wheel and knife, and may he `so arranged that it will act as a gage or presser foot for engaging' the outsole channel to determine' the depth to which the teeth of the feed wheel shall penetrate the work, and to also insure the removal of a uniform skiving from the edge of the sole bythe skiving y knife. In the embodiment of the inven tion shown, therefore, the. guard 22 p.er-
'forms the function lof ya guard for preventlmg injury` to the channel flap. or outseam,
and also performs the function of apgage or presserfoot for engaging the channel and controllingthe act-ion of the feed roll' .and
skiving knife uponthe` lower outer edge of the sole, and may 'also perform the function of a gage which either alone or in conjunction with the. work support enables. the operator to properly guide the workf remove the skiving at the desired distance from the channel flap in operating about the forepart v or through the shank` as the case may be.
, In order that thev feed roll may bev adjusted withl relation to -the work support, to actupon that part of the sole edge which is re'- 'moved by the skivingknife, the shaft l0 is so mounted that mayv beadjusted longitu dinally. This adjustment is provided for by retaining the shaft in its bearingsby collars-v 25 whichengage the ends of the bearings, and which may be adjusted to var-y the longitudinal position of the shaft.
.In .order that the skiving knife maybe adjusted to bring 'its cutting. Vedge, into proper position to remove, the desired skiving from the lower edgefof the sole, ythe knife isso mounted upon the head L2 that it may 'be given a horizontal adjustment transvversely ofthe direction of the feed, an ad-v justment in thel direction of the feed, an angular adjust-nient, and a. vertical adjustment. The horizontal adjustment transversely of v'the direc-tion of the feed is providedv for by clamping the shank of the knife between clamping jaws 26v ofa supporting arm 27, the knife being held in adjusted po'--` sition byfa clamping screw 2S. ByA this-ad,- just-ment the skivi-ng knife may be properly 'loca-ted with relationto the crease gage, or with relation tothe gage for engagingthe channel flap lto-cut close up tothe channel ap' or at any desired dist-ance fromV the`v channel fia-p. 'The adjustment of the knife in the direction of the line of4 feed .is pro-v vided for by .mounting the arm 27 onl a4 guideway formed on asupport 2 9, andsecuring the arni in positionl uponA the support by a clamping bolt 30 which passes through a slot'in 'the arm.- The angular adjustment of the skiving knife is provided .for by mounting the lsupport 29 upon a segmental guidew'ay formed upon a slidel, 'and securing the support-in adjusted .position by a .clamping bolt The A segmental guideway `is so formed that 1t is substantially concen-l triowith tlienend of the skivingknife, and by adjusting the support 29 upon 'the segmental guideway, vthe angular adjustment of the knife may be varied to produce the. d e-v sired bevel upon the lower outer' edge of .thesole In order that the knife may be adjusted vertically, the slide 31 is mounted upon a vertical guideway formed on i a bracket 33 formed on the side of the head 12.
An adjusting screw 34 is'provided for ad'-vv justing .the slide 3l, and the slide is clamped in adjusted positionby the clamping bolts In. operating'upon the Shanks of shoes,
the -work support may be used as a crease gage for guiding the shoe by engagement with the inseam or last, and in such case the guard'22 may be adjusted so that it may be utilized by the operator as a; gage for engaging the channel ap,.and thus enabling him to readily determine when the shoe is being held in proper posit-ion to remove the skiving without danger ofl injury to thev channel flap or to the o-utseam, 'or may be .adjusted so that it' does not enga-ge the cha-n- ,to which the skiving knife will cut, and the dept-hA to which the feed wheel may penetrate the Work. -In operating upon the foreparts of shoes provided with extension edge soles` the projectionof which from' the inseam or last. varies around theshoe, the guard .22 may be so adjusted orlocated that it may be used 'as a gage for guiding the shoe by ioo i engagement .with the channel flap. Since the channel flap' islocated at a uniform distance from the edge Aof the sole, the use of a gage toguide the shoe by engagement with to be removed from the lower outer edge of the soleabout the forepart without danger of injury to the channel flap or-to the 'outseam.
v-W'hi-le it is preferred to ,employ the .construction and arrangement of devices shown and'described, it will be understood that'thisconstruction and arrangement is'not material totheinvention except so far as it is the channel'flap enables-a uniform skiving 'specified inthe claims, and may be varied'A land 'modified without departing from the broader features of the invention.` Y
