To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. JACOBS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ottawa, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle Stanchions; and I Vdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the ac* companying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cattle-stanchions of the type comprising two oppositely facing, vertically arranged, -upright side members or bars pivoted or hinged together at their lower ends and latched together at their upper ends, whereby the stanchion may be opened to permit the insertion of the head of an animal, and then be closed to prevent the withdrawal of the same.
The invention has for one of its primary objects, to provide such a construction in stanchions, that when the side bars are unlocked they will immediately and automaticallyswing or spring apart and thus avoid the necessity of grasping the bars to swing them apart in opening the stanchion.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, illustrating in detail one of the preferred forms of my invention, the same is shown as applied to a stanchion A which is arranged in a vertical or upright position in a stall by being supported from the top and attached to the bottom of the stall. Said stanchion A, as shown, comprises two connected oppositely facing, vertically arranged, upright bars or side members B, C, having their upper and lower ends bent or curved inwardly toward each other. Said bars B, C are connected at their lower ends by a hinge of any preferred construction and are provided at their upper ends with a detachable connection, preferably in the form of a snap latch. As shown in the drawings, the hinged connection for the bars B, C comprises two castings b, 0,' the former being rigidly se cured to the lower end of the bar B, and the latter to the corresponding end of the bar C. Said casting b is provided with an eye b at its'free end, which is adapted to enter between the arms of a yoke c provided on the similar end of the casting c, the two being connected by a pivot bolt b2. By this construction, the bars B, C are prevented from being swung apart farther than necessary to permit the head of the animal to pass between them.
As shown in the drawings, the snap latch construction, constituting the detachable connection for the upper ends of the bars B, C, of the stanchion, comprises a casting b3 rigidly secured to the upper end of the bar B and provided with a yoke L* projecting beyond the end of the bar B. VThe forward end of said yoke b4 is arched or curved upwardly so that the upper end of the bar C may enter between its arms when swung toward the bar B. The bar C is provided with an upright lug at its upper end, said lug being adapted to enter within a suitable aperture provided therefor in the end of a spring-pressed locking latch b5 pivoted to an upright forked member 5G secured on the upper end of the bar B. The subject-matter vof my present invention embraces features as follows: Referring to the drawings, and especially -to Fig. 5 thereof, the 'casting i), as hereinbefore stated, is rigidly secured t'o the lower end of the side member 'or barB of the stanchion fand constitutes one of the members of the hinge for casting b is provided, above the eye therein,

Said lug 'bs projects to -such a distance from 'the pivot bolt b2, that when the side lmembers 4or bars B, C are being closedfthat is, when the upper end of the bar C is being moved toward the barl B in closing the stanchi-on, the stop-member 'or lug 5S will come into 'contact with the adjacent or'inner edge of the part or stop-member c3 integral with th'e casting c, rigidly secured to the lower 'end of the bar and stop movement of the bar C, before the upper ends of said bars B, C come together. To bring the upper end of the bar 'C into 'Contact with the corresponding end ofthe bar B, itis neces sary to force the bar C inward from the position it occupies when stopped by the 'stop-members 68 vand 03, with the result, that that portion of said bar C above the stop'- member 'c3 is sprung orv flexed and is maintained under tension when held in locked position. By reason of the constructionl above described, when the upper ends of the bars B, C are locked together, the elasticity of the bars themselves will tend to spring them apart. It follows, therefore, that as soon 'as the finger Ap-iece 67 of the latch at the upper lends of the bars B, C is depressed, to unlock the bars, said bars will immediately and automatically spring apart, thus avoiding the necessity of grasping the bars to swing them apart in order to open the stanchion. This self-opening feature of the stanchion is of considerable advantage, not only when considering one stanchion, but especially when considering a number of stanchions, one in each stall, that are arranged side by side. A man passing in front of the cattle in the stalls need only depress the :linger piece of the latch of each stanchion as he walks along, and side bars B, C of each stanchion will immediately swing open.
It is obvious from the above, that the stanchions thus made are more readily and quickly opened than in the case of stan chions so made that two hands are required to open them, as heretofore.
Instead of the coacting parts or stopmembers bs and c3 being integral with the castings constituting the members of the hinge for the lower ends of the bars B, C, as shown, it is to be understood that each of the bars B, C may be provided with either integral or attached stop-members so ar ranged as to come into contact with each other before the upper ends o-f the. bars are brought together in closing the stanchions. It is essential, however, that said stop-members be arranged to contact with each other at a point above, but adjacent to, the point o-f pivotal connection of the side bars of the stanchion, in order to obtain the effect of fleXure of the side lbars in closing them, and their automatic opening when unlatched, as hereinbefore stated.
While I have shown and described herein certain mechanical details of construction and arrangement of the several parts of the preferred form of my device illustrated, it is to be understood that these may be changed and variously modified without departing from the spirit o-f my invention and I do not wish to be limited to the construction and arrangement shown herein, except as pointed out in the appended claims.
l. A cattle-stanchion, comprising two side members or bars, means providing connection for said bars at one end of the stanchic-11, permitting swinging movement of said bars with respect to each other and including a stop member; one of said bars being resilient and provided with a stop member adapted to come into contact with the first-mentioned stop-member, before the stanchion is closed, so that the resilient bar will be under tension and will tend to spring outwardly when the stanchion is closed.
2. A cattle-stanchion, comprising two side members or bars having pivotal connection at one end of the stanchion and detachable connection at the other end of the same, each bar being provided intermediate its end with a stop-member, and that part of each bar between its swinging end and its stopmember being resilient, said stop-members being adapted to come into contact with each other, before the swinging ends of said bars are brought together in closing the stanchion, so that the resilient portions of said bars will, when the stanchion is closed,
be under tension.
3. A cattle-stanchion, comprising two resilient side members or bars having pivotal connection at their lower ends and detachable connection at their upper ends, said bars being provided adjacent their lower ends and above their point of pivotal connection, with stop-members adapted to come into contact with each other, before the upper endsof said bars are brought together in closing the stanchion, so that said bars will, when the stanchion is closed, be under tension.

A cattle-stanchion, comprising two resilient side members or bars having their upper and lower ends directed inwardly toward each other, means providing pivotal connection for said bars at their lower ends, and means providing detachable connection for said bars at their upper ends; one of said bars being provided, at its lower end, above its pivotal connection with the other bar, with a lug adapted to co-me into contact with the lower end of said other bar before the upper ends of said bars are brought together in closing the stanchion, so that said bars will be under tension when the stanchion is closed.
5. A cattle-stanchion, comprising two resilient side bars having their upper and lower ends directed inwardly toward each other, means providing det-achable connection for said bars at their upper ends, a yoked member secured to the lower end of one of said bars, an eyed member secured to the lower end of the other of the said bars and adapted to enter between the arms of said yoke, and a pivot bolt connecting said yoke and eyed members together; one of said members being provided, above the point where said pivot bolt passes through the same, with a lug adapted to come into contact with the other member before the upper ends of said bars are brought together in closing the stanchion, so that said bars will, when the stanchion is closed, be under tension and tend to spring apart.
