To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VILHELM Knnzn, of ll ilhelmshiitte, Neustadt, Germany, asubject of the King of Prussia, and whose postothce address is ilhelmshiitte, Neustadtonthe-Riibenberge, near Hanover, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented new and useful Means for Producing Cores or Molds, of which the following is a specification.
In order'toproducecores of circular cross section use is generally made of a wiper or shaping board held at a determined distance from the core body or-mandrel which is arranged in a circular bearing. The object of this wiper is to scrape off such of the core substance as may be applied in excess thereto and to smooth: the core substance during the rotation of the core mandrel. In this manner cores solely of'circular cross section could hitherto be produced; by the rotation of the core mandrel's.
Cores of rectangular, square, polygonal, oval, and other cross section are at present produced by ramming the core substance in special core flasks.
The present invention has for its object to dispense with these flasks and with the relatively high expense connected with their use.
According to this invention in order to produce cores or molds of any desired cross section: with the aid: of a wiping board pattern plates are used to determine the exact cross sectional circumference or configura tionof the core or mold and during a rotary motion between the core or mold and the wiper to guide the latter under'the action of a force which: causes. one of the two parts to be pressed against the other. To this end the wiper may. be pressed against the core pattern for instance by a spring, weight or the like. 1
According to the present invention in order to produce upright cores, themandrel and the pattern-disks are stationary and the wiper or the wiping board is carried around the mandrel by means of arms which are rotatably arranged on the mandrel.
According to the invention, moreover, molds such as block molds or the like are produced in an analogous manner, the wiping board being pressed against the interior of the pattern plates and guided around. a. vertical rod or axis arranged in the center of the pattern plates or disks. The interior of the pattern plates corresponds both as regards shape and size with the interior of themolds to be produced.
For full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 3 isa side elevation of another embodiment; Fig. 4 is a. top plan view of the embodiment shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the mandrel or pattern stem 12 issecured centrally in the pedestal 13, having a table plate 13 spaced therefrom adjacent thelower end of the stem 12 and preferably surmounting the table plate 13, is a pattern plate 15 which may be fixed in position in any desired manner. Secured to'the upper end of the mandrel 12 is a second pattern plate 16 the size and shape of which correspond with the dimensions of the upper end of the core. Pivotally mounted on the stem 12 are arms 18 and 19' the outer ends of which are braced by a beam 20 for the purpose of preventing a relative lateral displacement of the arms 18 and 19 as they revolve with the wiper 21. Said wiper 21 ismovable radially between the cross beam 20 and the stem 12, preferably by means of rollers 22 running on the arms 18 and 19. By this means the movement of the wiper is considerably facilitated and the friction correspondingly reduced. In order that the wiper or wiping board 21 may beforcibly held against the pattern plates or disks 15 and 16, any suitable devices may be employ-ed, such as for example the ropes 23 or the like which are attached to said wiper and pass over rollers 24 arranged on the inner ends of the arms 18 and 19. Attached to the free ends of the ropes are Wei ghts 25. By causing the arms 18 and 19 to swing around the mandrel, 12 for example by moving the beam 20, the wiper may be moved to and fro about the axis of mandrel 12, while at the same time the shape of the pattern plates will impart radial .movements to the wiper 21 and cause the core material to be applied to the mandrel and smoothed thereon.
The described method and mechanism according to this invention may be used in an analogous manner for producing molds. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the mandrel 37 is likewise centrally journaled, in a pedestal 26 provided with a table plate 26. In this embodiment, a wiper 27 is provided with anti-friction rollers 28, which run on the radial arms 29 which are rigidly connected by a beam 30. In order to provide means for forcing the wiper outwardly against the pattern disks 31 and 32 which correspond in shape to the outside conformation of the body to be produced, the wiper must be forcibly held against the inner walls of the pattern disks 31 and 32. For this purpose lever arms 33 are used, the ends of which press the wiper against the pattern disks 31 and 32. As shown the fulcrum or pivot of the upper lever arm is arranged on the upper arm 29 and the pivot of the lower lever arm is secured in the beam 30. The free ends of the said levers are connected with ropes 34 or the like which are guided over rollers 35 journaled in the inner ends of the arms 29 and to which weights 36 are attached. In order to prevent the upper arm from being displaced on the stem 37 the latter is provided with a stop collar 38. The displacement of the wiper on the arms and against the interior of the pattern disks may of course be brought about by other appropriate means. As will be seen from the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the movement of the wiper according to the shape and size of the pattern disks 31 and 32 is likewise effected by rotation of the wiper 27 and of the arms 29 about the mandrel 37 and in this manner the molding substance is applied and smoothed. The arrangement of the pattern disks on the core bar or mandrel or on the mold may likewise be effected in any other manner and details of the construction can be greatly modified without departing from the spirit of the present invention as will be readily understood.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a wiper, guide sup ports for said wiper, a pattern for determining the final path of said wiper for determining the configuration of a sweep mold, and mean for forcing said wiper toward and against said pattern during the progress of the molding operation, said guide supports being revoluble about the axis of said sweep mold.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a revoluble support,
of a wiper movable to and fro along said support, a pattern for determining the configuration of the mold, and means for forcing said wiper into sliding contact with said pattern.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a mandrel, of a wiper revolubly mounted on said mandrel, means for imparting a radial movement to said wiper during its revolution, and a pattern for determining the limit of said radial movement by direct contact with said wiper.
4. An improved mechanism for producing cores and molds of any desired cross section, consisting of a mandrel journaled on a fixed axis, patterns for determining the configuration of the core or mold, arms revolubly mounted on said mandrel, a wiper supported by said arms, and means for imparting a radial movement to said wiper during its rotary movement around the mandrel.
5. An improved mechanism for producing cor-es and molds of any desired cross section consisting of a mandrel journaled on a fixed axis, patterns determining the configuration of the core or mold, arms revolubly mounted on said mandrel, a wiper supported by rollers upon the said arms, and weight-actuated ropes for forcibly holding the wiper against the patterns.
6. An improved mechanism for produc ing molds of any desired cross section, comprising a mandrel journaled on a fixed axis, arms carried by said mandrel, a wiper movably supported by said arms, said wiper being shaped to correspond to the conforma: tion of the body to be produced, patterns, and means for forcibly holding the wiper against the interior of said patterns.
7 An improved mechanism for producing molds of any desired cross section, com-V prising patterns, revolubly mounted arms, a wiper movably mounted on said arms, levers mounted on said arms, said levers being adapted to forcibly hold the wiper against the inner walls of the patterns, the internal shape and size of which correspond to the outer dimensions of the body to be produced, and weight-actuated ropes, secured to said levers.
