Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 15, 1912. Serial No. 690,747.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DIELIS P. VAN ZANTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pella, in the county of Marion and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to stirrups, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a stirrup which is formed from a special type of sheet metal blank, the ends of the blank being provided with side wings which are rolled to form spring housings so that a resilient connection is provided between the body portion of the stirrup, and the supporting member. This resilient connection is provided so that the stirrup will give when the horse is trotting, thus to a certain extent relieving the rider from jolts.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partially in side elevation and partially in vertical section showing a stirrup constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly modified manner of constructing the stirrup. Fig. 3 is a sect-ion along the line 33 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section along the line 4 i in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the body portion of the stirrup is formed. Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view through the body portion of the stirrup. Fig. 7 is a sectional view through the end of a blank provided with a reinforcing central rib to strengthen the stirrup.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that this stirrup is formed from a blank shown in Fig. 5, the blank 10 be ing a narrow strip for the major portion of its length and having enlarged ends 11. The side portions 12 of the blank are separated from the enlarged ends by means of the slits 13. The side portions 12 form strips which are bent upon the body portion so that the sides of the body portion will be reinforced and the stirrup will thus be stronger. The ends 11 are coiled to form the spring housings 14: which may be positioned either outside or inside as illustrated in Figs.
1 and 2, and have their upper portions bent along the lines 15 to form the flanges 16 which act as abutments for the springs 17 mounted in the spring housings. A U shaped bar 18 has its arms passing through the housings and a washer 19 secured upon the end of each of its arms, the washers bearing against the springs 17 so that the body portion of the stirrup will be supported upon the springs 17. A roller 20 is mounted upon the bridge of the bar so that the usual stirrup strap may be connected with the stirrup. In Fig. 7 there has been shown a slightly modified type of blank in which the blank is provided with the central rib 21 which greatly braces the stirrup and also may form a foot rest to cause the stirrup to last longer.
From the foregoing description it will, therefore, be evident that there has been provided a stirrup which is formed from a novel type of sheet metal blank and which will be very cheap to manufacture and very durable. It will also be seen that if the spring which is in the housing becomes broken that the spring can be very easily removed, since the washer can be removed from the arms of the bar 18, andthe spring taken out. If any difiiculty is experienced in removing the washer, the housings can be uncoiled and the body portion of the stirrup compressed or expanded suflicient to permit the spring and arm to be removed.
lVhat is claimed is A stirrup comprising a body portion, a pair of spring housings, the bottom of said body portion extending beneath said spring housings and the sides of said body portion being carried beyond said housings and having their upper ends brought inwardly and connected with said spring housings, a hanger bracket having its arms extending into said housings and springs in said housings connected with the arms of said hanger bracket.
