Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. August 22, 1910. Serial No. 578,457.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES HERuAN VocEL, a British subject, residing at Vancouver, county of Vancouver, Province of British Columbia, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Typel/Vriting Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The figure is a perspective view showing a portion of the machine looking from the upper front right hand corner.
This invention relates to a new and improved typewriter, and especially to the means for operating the type bars and connected mechanism.
An object of this invention is to afford in a typewriting machine, a light touch by relieving the operator of a portion of the work necessary to actuate the type bars to their fullest extent. This object may be attained by supplementing the action of the finger pressed keys by the action of power means for continuing the movement started by said keys. This power means may be of any suitable character, and in this instance is shown in the form of electro-magnetic means adapted to actuate the type bars and connected mechanism directly and indirectly through the selective magnetic attraction of the electro-Inagnetic means.
A further object of this invention is to provide positive means for holding all of the unactuated type bars in their normal position at rest, while the selected actuated type bar is moving through its stroke. This object may be attained by providing electromagnetic means for retaining by its attractive force, the unactuated type bars in'their normal position at rest.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the specific parts of this invention the member aconstitutes the base of the machine to which the keyboard frame 6, and the main frame 0 and d, are substantially secured.

The rotating action of 9 toward the right will force the plate A to the right by means of the crank 32 pressing against the pm 0 secured in the plate A, thus bringing into contact the electric wires e, and the extension of the electric conductor D from the battery E, closing an electric circuit through the battery, which energizes the electro-magnet and tends to hold all the type at the position of rest adjacent to it. The plate A moving to theright through the action before described also forces the spring r to the right, thus rotating the ratchet wheel a (having teeth around its periphery) to the eX- tent of one tooth, bringing the point of the tooth in cont-act with the shoe '0 forming an extension of the electric wire '0, which completes an electric circuit through the ratchet wheel 8 the wire u and battery :20 and wire '0, thus energizing the circular electro-magnet y, ending to draw the type to the point a, it being understood that there would be soft iron connected with each of the type, which will be attracted by the magnets. It will be seen that the contact between '2; and u would be immediately broken as the point of the tooth passes the extension from 0, thus allowing the type, through the force of gravity and such springs as may be later mentioned or engaged, and through magnetic influence of F, to return to its position of rest.

By a proper adjustment, it will be seen that the type bars can be brought up to, striking position, and attracted at the last portion of the stroke, to give; the desired iinpression which will bein the character of: a pressure stroke rather-than an. impact stroke, thus eliminating considerable noise incident to the operation of the typewriter. As. has been stated. above, each key in the set or bank of the typewriter, is operatively connected in the manner described, to the plate A, which is therefore in the nature of a, universal bar, and can bev used to control theescapement of the carriage, (not shown), to feed the same properly, in order to allow for the proper spacing of the successive letters. In order to indicate such an arrangement, the plate A is shown as provided with slot in a rocker 38, pivoted at 39, and having connected thereto a link 40, which communicates with any suitable type of escapement mechanism provided for the carriage.
Variations may be resortedto within the scope of the invention,.and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
I claim:
1. The combination with a plurality of typewriting elements, of means for operatthe crank 29,.
ing one of said elements individually, and
other similar element inactive whenever one of said elements has been actuated.
2. The combination with a plurality of typewriting elements each adapted to be individually operated, of electro magnetic means for holding any other similar element at rest after one of said elements has been actuated.
3. The combination with a typewriting element, of electro-magnetic means for operat ing said. element by direct attraction thereof, and separate power-driven means for supplementing the action of said electro-magnetic means.
1. The combination with a typewriting element, of electro-magnetic means for operating said element by direct attraction thereof, and electro-magnetic means for supplementing the action of said first-mentioned electromagnetic means.
5. The combination with a typewriting element, of means for pulling said element in one direction, means for pulling said element in another direction, and selecting devices for controlling the actuation of said element by either of said means, by initially moving saidv element to bring it under the influence of either of said means.
6. The combination with a typewriting element, of a pair of electro-magnets adapted to pull said element in opposite directions, selective means for determining which of said magnets shall pull said element, and a mechanism controlled by said selective means for exciting both of said magnets concomitantly.
7. The, combination with a type bar, of a key for starting the movement of said bar, additional means for continuing the movement, of said bar, and electro-magnetic means for eiiecting the final portion of the stroke of said bar.
8-. Thecombinatio-n with a type bar, of a key for efiecting the initial movement of said type bar, electro-1nagnetic means brought in play by the movement of said key for continuing the motion of said bar, and additional electro-magnetic means for effecting the final movement in the striking stroke of said type bar.
9. The combination with a type bar, of an electro-magnet for positively holding it inactive unless first set in motion, means for positively continuing its motion when once moved, and additional electromagnetic means for causing it to be accelerated just before the type strikes the sheet.
10. The combination with a type bar, of means for positively holding it, power means for positively continuing its motion when once moved, and additional power meanstor positively accelerating the end of its stroke.
11. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a universal bar, a key, a rockshaft actuated thereby, a cam plate carried by said rock shaft adjacent to said universal bar, a pin carried by said universal bar normally engaging the edge of said cam, and adapted to give said universal bar aninitial movement when said cam is actuated bv said key, a second pin carried by said universal bar adapted to actuate said cam, electrical means for completing the movement of said universal bar after said initial movement, a type bar, and means actuated by said rock shaft to drive said type bar.
12. A typewriting machine having means for imparting motion to the type members electrically, and comprising a type-bar, an electro-magnet for moving said type-bar, an electro-magnet for holding said type-bar, a soft iron member fast to the type-bar acted on by said magnets, and a universal bar for opening and closing the circuits of said magnets.
13. A typewriting machine having type members, means for imparting motion to the type members electrically, comprising two electro-magnets, a soft iron member on the type member, a universal bar, means operated through said universal bar for opening and closing the circuits, and other means operated through said universal bar for imparting motion to the type.
14:. A typewriting machine having means for imparting motion to the type members electrically, and having a holding electromagnet and a driving electro-magnet, a soft iron member on each type member, and a universal bar for opening and closing the circuits.
15. The combination with a type-bar and a universal member, of an electro-magnet for starting said type-barthrough said universal member, and moving it into the field of another magnet which accelerates the end of the stroke.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a key and a universal bar initially moved thereby, of a type connected to said key, an electro-magnet energized by said initial movement, and a lost motion connection between said electro-magnet and said universal bar for completing the action of said type. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a key and a universal bar initially moved thereby, of a member connected to said key adapted to be caught by said universal bar, an electro-magnet energized by said initial movement so that it completes the motion of said universal bar, and a type connected to said key so that said electromagnet completes the action of said type.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a key and a type connected to said key, of a universal bar moved by the initial operation of said key, a magnet energized by said initial movement for holding said type against movement unless moved by said initial operation of said key, an electro-magnet energized by said initial movement for completing the motion of said universal bar, and an electro-magnet energized by the operation of said key for completing the type stroke. a
19. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a key and a type connected thereto, of a universal bar moved by the initial operation of said key, an electromagnet energized by said initial key movement to complete the movement of said key and type, a lost motion connection between said magnet and said universal bar, and a magnet energized by the operation of said key for accelerating the type-stroke at its end.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a key and a type initially moved thereby, of an electro-magnet for holding said type if not so initially moved, an electro-magnet for completing the movement of said type, an electro-magnet for accelerating sald completion of'movement,
a contact for determinmg when said holding magnet shall become effective, and a separate contact for determining when said moving magnets shall become effective.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a key and a type connected thereto, of a universal bar initially moved by said key, an electro-magnet for completing the movement of said universal bar and thereby moving aid type, an electro-magnet for accelerating the type stroke near the completion thereof, a single contact for making said magnets effective, a separate magnet for holding the type if not so initially moved, and a separate contact for said holding magnet.

I11 a typewriting machine, the combination with a type bar and a key, of a universal bar for receiving a partial stroke from the key, an electric circuit, a toothed member in said circuit moved by said partial stroke to the extent of one tooth, a shoe in said circuit for striking a tooth on said toothed member when turned to make and break the circuit, and a magnet in said circuit for drawing said universal bar to complete its stroke to operate the type bar.
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type bar and a key, of a universal bar, connection between the key and said bar to impart thereto a partial stroke, an electric circuit, a toothed member in said circuit moved by said partial stroke to the extent of one tooth, a shoe in said circuit for striking a tooth on said toothed member when turned to make and break the circuit, and a magnet in said circuit for drawing said universal bar to complete its stroke, to operate the type bar,

26.- Ina typewri-ting. machine, the combination with a type bar and a key, of a deviceoperated by the key, auniversal bar for receiving a partial stroke from said device, an electric circuit closed by said partial stroke and a magnet in said circuit for drawing said universal bar to complete its stroke to operate the type bar; means being provided for opening the circuit at the completion of the stroke of the universal bar;

type bar, an operating key, a universal bar, a= connection between said universal bar and said key whereby the universal bar is-given a partial stroke, said universal bar connected to the type'bar to operate the same,-an electric circuit, means for closing. said electric circuit by said partial operation of the universal bar, and a magnet in said circuit for causing said universal bar to complete-its stroke.
28. In a typewriting machine, the combi-- nationof: a type bar, an operating key, a universal bar for receiving a partial stroke from the key, said universal bar connected to the type bar to operate the same, and means actuated by said partial stroke to complete the stroke of said universal bar.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type bar and a key, of a universal bar for receiving a partial stroke from the key, and" means actuated by said partial stroke to complete the stroke of said universal bar; the type bar being operable by the universal bar during such completion of the stroke of the latter.
