CHARLES T. GOULD, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ON-THIRD TO EDWARD HILKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS:
SEWING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 13, 1912. Serial No. 2),205.
To a?? eff/tom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES T. E. GOULD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invente-d certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines,- of which the following, taken in connection with the'drawings, is a description.
My invention has for its objectl the production of a bobbin holder for sewing 1nachines of the class known as the rotary type, and is designed more especially to be used with a. sewing machine having a sectionalA bed plate. i
rIhe principal object of my invention is to provide a bobbn holder which maybe entirely inclosed within the casing covering the underthread mechanism; one which shall be very simple in construction and one which when closed is securely locked in position forming a casing for the bobbin which is carried upon the end ofthe revoluble shaft.
Other features o-f advantage of my invention will be hereinafter more fully explained and pointed out in the claim.
In vthe drawings forming part of this specification and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts- Figure l is a side elevation of my invention illustrating the bed plate of the machine in section; Fig. 2 is an enlarged View of t-he bobbin holder and locking mechanism; Fig.
3 is a similarview with the holder shown in section and the locking mechanism removed; Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the bobbin holder.
A, Fig. l illustrates the bed plate of the machine, A the head, and B the needle mechanism of a sewing machine, but which form no part of the present invention other than to illustrate the operation of the under thread mechanism, and will therefore not be further described.
B is a rotary shaft operated by lany suitable mechanism through the crank B2 attached to one end thereof. Upon the opposite end is secured and revolves therewith the looper C. Fitting inside of the curve formed by the hook-of the looper is a bobbin 4the flange a is one end of a leaf case c. Mounted upon the rotary shaft B contiguous to the looper C-is av cam or'eccentric C which operates against the under side of the feed C3 which extends through slots in the throat plate. C4. This throat plate C4 is removably secured to the bed plate A of th-e machine and is provided with a needle hole d2 which is countersunk upon the under side thereof.
Hinged or pivotallv secured to the flange a on the under side of the throat plate, and
atented Nov. 25, 1913.
'ext-ending over the end of the case c is a holder c which is preferably circular in shape, Fig. 4. A pin c2 extends across the holder andforms an abutment for the case c,.shown more clearly in Fig. 3. Secured to spring D, the opposite end of which hasan opening therethrough which engages the projecting end of the pin c2 to lock 'said holder c in closed position. The bobbin is thus held in' the case c at the end' of the revoluble shaft B directly beneath the throat plate C4, having the upper thread is carried by the needle B, the
needle hole (Z2 through which the thread forming a loop through which' the hook of the loo-per engages and carries it around to form the stitch with the lower thread, cl.
I claim: y
In a sewing machine, the combination Iof a revoluble shaft, a bobbin case held in the end of the shaft, a throat plate located above said case, a. circular bobbin holder pivotally secured at its upper part to the under side of the throat plate, a in extending across the center of said ho from the peripheral edge thereof, and a leaf spring/secured at one end thereof to the under side ofthe throat plate and adapted for engagement at its free end with lsaid pin to lock the holder in closed position substantially as described In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed'this specification in the'presence of two subscribing witnesses.v
