Description

` tionary der, substantially as cylinder. i i
Extending longitu inally along the periphery of the' W tal,
` Mitrrnms nMoRRrs, or oouNoIL BLUFFS, IoWA.
i Letters Patent No.107,944L`aatc1oct0ber4,`187o.
IMPRovMEN'r IN FEAIHER-RENovAToRs.
The ohedule 'refen'ed'to in these LetterejPatent and making part of the same.
Council B1uffs, in the countyof Pottawattamie and in w the State of Iowa, havelinvented certain new and usefiil Improvements in` Feat-her'-Renovators; and do. hereby declare that the following `is a fuILjclear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the i accompanying drawing making apart of [this specifii cation, in which-#-r i i Figu'rel is'aplan viewiof the upper side of the de- `vice, with the cover openerhand Fjgure 2 is a vei'tical"cross'-section of the same on the line a: a: ofifig. 1. i K I' 'Letters of like nainean'd kind refer to like parts in t each of i the figures.` v i i `My inventionbclongs to. a'class of devices for cleaning feathers-from impurities, and forfestoring them to their original elastic condition; and
Itlconsists,prmcipally, ima reservoir or`cylinder for ;containing'theffeathers pivoted within a stastearn-jacket,lsubstantially as liereinafter vset forth.` i
It also consists i'n a pivotedcylinder containing1- i the feathers, provided withyhollow journals, and hay-` ing portions of its .peripher perforated, and provided with suitable slides for clo'sihgr the openings, when'dei sired, snbstantially, asis`hereinafter shown andfor the `purposespecified.
It also consists in the removable end of the cylin- *hereinafter shown and for the pnipose described. J 4 y i In the annezed drawingf` i i A represents a street-metal cylinder, having one of i i its ends inclosed by means of a fixed head,'0, while i its opposite endisprovided With a` head, B, having a iiange', b, which embracesl` the outside of said cylinder,
- and secures said head` fi'rmly' thereto. i
`lSecuredto,andprojectinghorizontally'outward from,
the center of each headB and O, is a short sectionrof pipe, B'and G',jrespectively, the first of which, B', is
inclosed at its inner end by a reticulated diaphragm,
* y `b', while the opposite '-pipeis `unobstructed, and furi nishes` free communicationwit-h the interior of the cylinder are severalseries of perforations, a, which i are arranged in groups at equidistant points, and are each covered, `when zdesired, by means of' a slide, D, workingradially upon said cylinder, and held in place sccured to the latter, and embracing the cuds of the former. i
An opening, E1, passing through the `wall of the cylinder, and closed by means of a longitudinal slide, i F, permitting'an inspection of the interiorof the same when in use, and one or `more cletsor ribs,
i use of otherdevices G, secnred longit'udinally upon the inner side of said cylinder, 'for thejipurposeof shaking up 'and separi'.
ating the feathers, complete this portion of the device.
As thus constructed,"thc cylinder is pivoted witl1-= z iu a suitable casin'g, H, 'which is constructed` of Wood,
in the general formshown, and divided at its center longitudinally, with the'section hinged together,*so as to permit of the ready insertion within of said cylinder, around which is,.left a'n annular chamberfor containing steam. i
In Operating this device, the adjustable cnd B of the cylinder is removed, 'the latter filled with feathers, 4said head replaced, andth'e cylinder 'placed iu position within the casing.
The nozzle of a pair of bellows is now inserted in the outer end of the pipe G', the cylinder rotated' 'slowly, and a strong blast .ofi-aircaused to pass into the same, until all dust and loose dirtcontained within the feathers lare blown outward, through` the diaphragm and the pipe B', into the open air.
'The ends of the pipes B' and O' are 'now closed, by "-njleans' of plugs, the' slides D are opened, the casing closed'andf'secured, and steam admitted to its intei'ior through a'pipeattached to its end, andconnected V`with any suitable generating 'apparatus,-when, by slowly revolving said cylinder, each` feather is brought in contact with the steam, until all impurities are reV `moved and their natural elasticit-y is restored. i
Whensufliciently cleansed, steam, is shut ofl', the
slidesD closed, the pipes B' and C' opened, andtsteani again admittcd to the casing, where it imparts its heat to the cylinder, so as to cause all moistnre contained therein to evaporate and `pass ontward through said' pipes, leaving the feathers entirely dry and ready for use. o e
To remove the feathers, the cylinder is' taken from its casing, its end B removed, and its contentsv quicklypoured out.
The special advantages possessed by this device,
areo First, `it enables the thorough and speedy removal of all dustv from 'fcathers, without the employme'nt of other or special devices.
. Second, it enables the employment of steam for the oleansing and drying of feathers, and thus avoids the t for accomplishing the last-nanied result, i
Third, the device is so simple in its parts that any meclianic'of ordinary skill can readilyiconstruct the same, in addition to which, said parts' being com'paratively inexpensve, the complete'v machine can be furnished ata low cost.
-Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention,
'What I olaim as new is- 1. The metal oyljnden or ieservoir A, for containing feathers to he reno'ated, pivoted freely within a stationary oasing or steam-jacket, H, snbstantially' as and for the pnrpose shown.
2. rhe pivoted metallica eyliner A, for containing feathe1's,'provided with hollow Journals B' and O', and having portions of its periphery perforated 'and covered with suitable slides D D, for the purpose of controlling the admission of steam from the surrounding Jacket to the feathers, suhstantially as shown and speoifiefl.
3. In combination with the cylinder A, construoted as deseribed, the head or cover B, of the full diameter of said: cylinder, and made removable, -foiI the pnrpose of introduoing and wthdrawing the feathers, snbstam tially as shown.. In faestmony that I claim the foregoing, I have herennto set my hand this 15th day' of July, 1870;
MATTHIAS K. MORRIS.
