APPARATUS FOR CHARGING FURNACES OR OVENS.
Application filed February 9, 1912.
i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, UTLEY VVnoou, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Charging Furnaces or Ovens, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and compact form of portable de vice for charging kilns, ovens or furnaces (referred to in the claim simply as a furnace an object which I attain in the man ner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a pyrites kiln with charging device therefor in accordance with my invention, the latter being shown in position for delivering a charge into the kiln; Fig. 2 is an end view of the charging device, and Figs. 3 and t are plan or top views of the same on a reduced scale, and illustrating the manner of introducing the charging boxes into or withdrawing them from the kiln.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, 1 represents the receiving chamber of a pyrites kiln although the same may be the receiving chamber of any other form of furnace or oven, 2 representing the charging opening in the front wall of the kiln and 3 one of the swinging plates whereby said opening can be normally closed. The charging device consists of a wheeled truck 4 running on rails which are laid in front of a row of kilns disposed end to end so that it can be traversed from kiln to kiln in order to charge the same in succession, projecting yokes 5 at each end of the truck constituting handles whereby the truck may be readily pushed along over the rails.
Rigidly supported upon the truck is a central post 6 and free to turn upon the latter is a turntable 7, upon which are mounted the bearings 8 for a series of shafts 9 dis posed side by side parallel to one another, and each carrying at one end a charging box 10, the opposite end of the shaft being squared, or otherwise formed, as at 11, for the reception of a suitable handle whereby it may be turned in its bearings, collars 12 on each shaft serving to prevent any longitudinal movement of the shaft in its bearings.
Each of the charging boxes being pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 676,606.
vided with its proper load the truck is run along in front of the row of kilns with the charging buckets and their shafts 9 disposed parallel with the track rails until the truck approaches the kiln which is to be charged, WllClOllPOll the charging boxes are swung through the charging opening 2 of the kiln, as shown in Fig. 3, the turntable turning on its central post in order to permit such movement which continues until the charging boxes are at a right angle to the track rails and are contained completely within the receiving chamber of the kiln, as shown in Fig. t, whereupon the shafts 9 are turned throughout a partial revolution so as to dump the contents of the boxes into the receiving chamber of the kiln, and are then turned backward again so as to restore the charging boxes to their former position, after which the truck is moved either forward or backward upon the rails and the charging boxes are swung out of the kiln again and are conveyed by the truck to the place where they receive their fresh charges.
I am aware that furnace charging apparatus has before been devised comprising a truck movable on rails across the front of a series of furnaces disposed side by side or end to end, such truck being provided with a transversely moving charging box carrier so that the charging box could be thrust directly into the furnace or withdrawn directly therefrom and could be turned when in the furnace chamber so as to dump its load.
A charging device constructed in accordance with my invention requires for its operation considerably less space in front of the row of kilns or ovens or furnaces than is re quired by such previous charging devices and the introduction of the charging boxes into and the withdrawal of the same from the receiving chamber is effected without the use of the elaborate projecting and retracting mechanism heretofore required, such operations in my improved charging device simply necessitating the partial turning of the turntable on its pivotal axis, in order to permit the charging boxes to swing into and out of the receiving chamber.
In the drawings I have shown the turntable as provided with a group of three charging boxes and their appropriate shafts, but less than this number may be used if desired, or more, depending upon the ca pacity of the charging opening 2 for the insertion and Withdrawal of the charging boxes in the manner described.
I claim:
A furnace charging device consisting of a truck having thereon a pivoted turntable with bearings, longitudinally fixed shafts of one or more charging boxes mounted in said bearings, said shafts and their boxes being of such length as to reach fully into the furnace When the truck is in mid position, and
the boxes being adapted to swing into or out of the furnace as the truck approaches or recedes from said mid position.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my 15 name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
