FOLDING SHELF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 15, 1913.
Patcntcdhov.18,1913.
Serial No. 767,791.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Srnvnnn hlnrnn, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Shelves, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a shelf that is adapted to be attached to a wall. or other support.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a folding or knock-down shelf which simple in construction, etlieient in operation, and which can be quickly and readily extended and folded.
Another object of the invention is to pro duce a shelf of the character specified, comprising a plurality of holding brackets which are interconnected in such a manner that all of the same are adapted to be extended or folded by shifting any one of the same or their connecting means.
\Vith these and other objects in View, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the acconr panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a shelf, constructed in accordance with the present invention, in its extended position; Fig. 2 is a similar view of said shelf in its folded position, certain parts being removed; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the shelf in its extended position; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the extended shelf; and F 5 is a similar view of the folded shelf.
In the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a support, for instance a wooden board which is attached by means of screws, nails or otherwise, to the wall 11 of a room, and has fixedly secured to its upper edge a horizontally extending strip 12, to which is fastened by means of hinges 13 a shelf board 14. One leaf of each hinge is attached to the underfacc of the shelf board l t and the other leaf to the undcrfacc of the strip 12, thereby permitting the shelf board l l to be folded into substmitially parallel relation to the support '1 O. For holding the shelf board in. a horizontal, that is to say in its extended position, a plurality of brackets 15 are provided. These brackets are secured by means of hinges ll to the support 10 in a manncr which enables them to be folded or turned upon the inner face of the support.
For actuating the brackets, a bar 17 is slidahly disposed in a horizontal groove 18, which extends throughout the length of the support. The ends of the bar project beyond the ends of the support and carry knobs 19, facilitating the shifting thereof. Each bracket is connected to this bar by a link 20, which is hinged at 21. to its respective bracket and at to the said bar. The hinges 92 are located at a substantial distance from the inner face of the support 10 when the shelf is in its extended position, as will be clearly seen from an inspection of Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The operation of this device is as follows: When the shelf is in its extended position. the brackets 15 thereof are arranged at right angles to the support 10, thereby holding the shelf board l l; in a horizontal position, and, since the said brackets are disposed at little intervals, a firm substantial support is provided at all times for the articles resting on said shelf board. If it is desired to move the shelf board into substantially parallel relation to the support 10, the operator takes hold of either one of the knobs 19 and shifts the actuating bar 17 to the left, whereby, due to the con ncctions between the said bar and the brackets, the latter are swung around their pivots into abutting positions with the inner face of the support 10. The shelf board 14 can then be turned around its hinges into the position shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The cmlstruction herein described is especially useful for shelves of substantial lengths. Obviously, if the operator stands at any intermediate point between the two knobs 1,9 and intends to fold the shelf, any one of the brackets can be taken hold of and swung onto the inner face of the sup port 10. By this operation, obviously the remaining brackets follow the motion of said first bracket, inasmuch as the folding of said first bracket causes a shifting of the bar 17 To extend the shelf the reverse operations are necessary, that is to say first the shelf board is moved into a horizontal position, and then the bar 17 shifted to the right, which results in an extending of the brackets at right angles to the face of the support 10. Obviously in extending, the bar may be shifted by means of the knobs 19, or by swinging any one of the brackets.
It is to be observed that, While herein the invention has been described in connection With a shelf, it may be applied to folding tables just as Well; particularly to tables which are attached to Walls.
l/Vhat I claim is 1. In a folding shelf, the combination with a support, of a shelf board pivotally attached thereto, a plurality of brackets hinged to said support, a bar shift-ably arranged on said support, and links hinged to said brackets and said bar, whereby upon shifting of the latter said brackets are ranged in said groove, and links hinged to said brackets and said bar, whereby upon shifting of the latter said brackets are adapted to be folded upon said support or to be extended at an angle thereto to sustain when 111 the latter positions said shelf board.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 12th day of May, A. D. 1913.
