The object of this invention is to provide an improved ratan scraper and slicer which will produce clean work practically free from bark.
Machines for scraping and slicing ratan are known in which scraper-blades are arranged radially but these have the disadvantags that canes of various thicknesses cannot be worked indiscriminately without leaving unscraped ribs more or less in width on the core and thereby entail waste of material or at least a partly reduced selling price. In another type of machine for the aforesaid purpose, the scraper-blades are not radially disposed and only a single polygonal blade, or two blades in opposite positions, is or are provided so that the operation requires at least two passages of the cane through the machine by turning each cane axially through 90 degrees. Also with this arrangement of scrapers there remain usually four unscraped ribs on the cane which in thick canes present considerable loss when considering the manufacture in bulk.
The invention is based on a combination of the two separately known systems with a view of attaining the combined advantages without their inherent disadvantages.
This improved ratan scraper device coir tains in combination the radial arrangement of a plurality of blade-holders with groupwise incorporated slicers in form of polygonal cutters all mounted together in a holder providing radial adjustment. The more polygonal cutters are incorporated in a group with the scrapers in each holder the closer together will the scrapers attack the bark of the cane so that no intervening ribs of bark can possibly be left by any one group in the holder. Ribs can only he left in the interval between the several groups of cutters and scrapers so that the peripheral surface of the canes is more fully utilized. Further with the scraping devices referred to as the second known type it is only possible to scrape an even number of ratan strips, while with the present combined radial adjustable sc'aper and slicer any uneven number of Specification of Letters Patent.

In the example shown in the drawings there are three scraper-slicers a having three polygonal cutters comprising head cutters 0 and side-cutters (I. When the annulus m is being turned in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 1) by means of a handle in, the tools are forced inward toward the center so as to suit various thicknesses of canes. The blocks are kept in position by means of a cover 2 (Fig. 2) secured by means of screws to the fixed guides 70. At the outlet for the un' used core of the cane and for the separate strips, there is provided a funnel t. The cane 'r to be treated is introduced at s (Fig. 2) while the unused core to and ready made strips '2: issue from the funnel t. The ribs left on the core w will be found to be exceedingly thin owing to the use of this improved combined device, and are hardly Worth considering in comparison with the ribs left in the treatment With the ordinary machines. To enable the core 'w to be utilized for other purposes the thin adhering ribs can be readily scraped off by any suitable circular knife.
I claim:
A ratan scraping and slicing tool-head consisting of radially movable scraper blocks, integral polygonal end cutters and side cutters fast on said blocks, angular cuter ends formed 011 said blocks, intervening guide pieces for the latter, a carrier plate for same, a turnable annulus surrounding said blocks and cutters, and triangular recesses providing an'inclined bearing surface for the angular ends of the blocks, as and for the purpose described.
