MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
.iAWEME llS.
To all whom it may concern:
3e it known that I, THOMAS S. HoMaNs, of borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovei'nent in Mechanical ivlovenients, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for imparts ing to a wheel or its equivalent positive, definite, intermitting, rotary movement, at the same time keeping control of the wheel so that it cannot overrun by momentum, and cannot be turned in either direction during the intervals between the movements.
To this end it consists in combining with a wheel, having notches therein, a driving member mounted to vibrate about the axis of the wheel as a center and to slide radially in relation to the wheel, and means for imparting positive and definite motion to said driving member; and it also consists in combining with the above parts an independent, radially movable locking member to hold the wheel firmly when the driving member is disengaged.
My mechanism is of such character that the wheel is turned positively and with a uniform acceleration through equal, definite distances, positively arrested at the end of each movement and positively locked between the movements.
The mechanism is adapted for application to type distributing machines, indexing machines, dividing engines, and generally in all cases in which it is required to impart positive and definite, intermitting rotation to a driven member.
In the drawings, Figures 1, 2 and 3 represent side elevations of my mechanism, with the parts in the various positions which they assume in the course of its action.
A represents the wheel or disk to which it is required to impart the intermitting motion. It is of circular form, mounted on a central axis, P, and is provided on the periphery with a series of angular slots or notches, a, at uniform distances apart.
C is the driving member, a reciprocating and laterally swinging arm, carried at one end by a rotary driving crank, D, and provided at the upper end with a longitudinal slot, 0, through which the shaft 13 extends, so that the arm may slide longitudinally and also swing laterally around the shaft. E is a rib or tooth fixed to the arm C, and of Specification of Letters Patent.

suitable size to snugly enter the notches in the wheel.
\Vhen the crank is rotated, it swings the bar laterally and also moves it 1ongitudinally, in such manner that the tooth E is caused to enter one of the notches in the wheel, and then moved laterally, thereby effecting a positive. and definite rotation of the wheel. After the wheel is turned a distance equal to that between the notches, the tooth is withdrawn, returned laterally and caused to enter the next notch, and so on repeatedly, the tooth entering one notch after another and turning the wheel posi tively forward step by step. It is to be observed that the tooth serves also as a stop to resist the momentum of the wheel and prevent it from overrunning at the end of the movement, before the tooth is disengaged.
In order to lock the wheel against accidental rotation when the driving tooth E is disengaged, I provide a locking tooth, F, fixed on a slide, f, which is mounted to reciprocate in fixed guides, 1, this slide being connected by pivot to a link, f", which is in turn pivoted at to the driving arm C. The parts are so proportioned that the looking tooth F enters the notch on one side of the wheel just before the propelling tooth E is withdrawn from the opposite side, and, on the contrary, the tooth E enters before the locking tooth F is withdrawn. This arrangement insures a positive and uniform rotation of the wheel, prevents it from overrunning, and causes it to be locked firmly in position when not in motion.
The essence of the invention lies in combining with a wheel having notches, teeth or equivalent points of engagement, a driving tooth adapted to interlock therewith, and having a motion around the center of the wheel and also a motion in a radial direction, that it may positively turn the wheel and hold it under control during such motion; and it also consists in combining with the above parts a locking member having a radial and a lateral movement.
It is to be noted that the wheel actuating and locking members move radially in relation to the wheel, so that they may fit the slots and prevent lost motion between the parts. This also permits the employment of long, flat surfaces, well adapted to resist wear. It will be noted that the crank gives a uniformly accelerated movement to the parts. Gwing to the employment of the crank motion, the closeness with which the parts may be fitted, and the absence of lost motion, a high speed may be imparted to the wheel without shock or danger of injury to the parts. 7
The operating crank may be slotted and its wrist pin made adjustable toward and from the center, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus permitting the throw of the crank to be varied in order to impart more or less movement to the wheel, the adjustment in each case being such that the tooth E will be carried from one notch to another. F or example, the tooth may engage each notch in succession, or it may engage the alternate notches, the wheel being turned in one case twice as far as in the other.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a notched wheel, a radially movable locking member to hold said wheel against movement, a toothed arm adapted to swing about the wheel axis and to move radially in relation thereto for the purpose of rotating the wheel, and a connection between sald loclnn and rotatm members to effect the engagement of each before the disengagement of the other, whereby the turn about the axis of the wheel to efliect its positive rotation and arrest its motion, in-
combination with the independently guided locking tooth F to hold the wheel, and means connected with the arm C to reciprocate it.
3. The combination with a notched wheel A, the toothed and slotted arm C mounted to turn and slide about its axis and thus to actuate the wheel, the crank I) connected to the arm C, the locking slide f and the link f connecting the slide f to the arm C.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand this tenth day of November, 1906, in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
