To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnrx L. Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Running- Gear; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the running gear at the front end of wagons and other similar vehicles; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the front end portion of a wagon provided with running gear according to this invention with one of the road wheels removed for clearness. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the running gear with the springs and bolster removed. Fig. 3 is a partial section through the head block, taken on the line wa2 in Fig. 2. Fig. t is a cross-section, taken on the line g -g in Fig. 3.
An axle 2 having an axle block 3 is provided, and similar road wheels 4 are mounted on the axle spindles. The lower circle 5 of a fifth wheel is secured to the axle in any approved manner. The upper circle (3 of the fifth wheel is bolted to a head block 7 which has a curved seat 8 at its top. The head block is hollow and is provided with a cover plate 9 for closing its open bottom, and this plate is curved upwardly to correspond with the curved bottom of the head block. This plate 9 has an arm 10 at its middle part which extends rearwardly over I the upper circle 6 of the fifth wheel, and the plate 9 also has a projection 11 which enters the bottom portion of the head block.
A leaf spring 12 rests on the seat 8 of the head block. A second leaf spring 1 1 is connected to the leaf spring 12, and a bolster 15 is secured to the leaf spring 14. The two leaf springs are curved in opposite directions and their end portions are connected by pivots 16, these leaf springs and bolster being of any approved construction.
A main perch 18 of wood is provided and has a tongue 19 at its front end which is passed through holes 20 in the sides of the head block. The front end of the tongue 19 is secured to the upper circle of the fifth Wheel by a bolt 21, and a block 22 is inter- Specification of Letters Patent.

posed between the circle and the tongue, and has a lug 23 on its rear side which over laps the lower circle 5.
A metallic perch bar 21 is arranged on the underside of the wooden or main perch l8, and the front end portion of the perch bar 2-1 rests on the arm 10. A channelshaped guide 25 is arranged under the rear part of the lower circle 5. This guide has a plate 26 at its front end under the arm 10, and a plate 27 at its rear end under the perch bar 2 1. Bolts 28 are provided and pass through holes in the wooden perch 18, the perch bar 2 1, the arm 10, and the plates 26 and 27, and secure all these parts rigidly together.
A lower stay bar 30 is secured to the plate 27 and has an eye 31 at its front end under the axle. An upper stay 32 is secured to the wooden perch and has an eye 33 at its front end over the middle part of the lower leaf spring 12. A king belt or pin 35 is providcd and passes vertically through holes in the eyes and 31, the head block and its cover plate and arm 10, and through the tongue 15) of the wooden or main perch. This king bolt permits the lower circle to oscillate in contact with the upper circle of the fifth wheel.
The rear end of the wooden perch has a tongue 37, and the rear end of the perch bar has an offset portion 38, for engaging with the rear axle of the wagon.
A running gear constructed according to this invention is very satisfactory in action, and can be made and pu t together in a much shorter time than running gears of ordinary construction, and it is not liable to break or to get out of order.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In a running gear, the combination, with a hollow head block having holes through its sides, and a cover plate connectcd to the lower side of the head block and provided with a rcarwardly projecting arm; of the upper circle of a fifth wheel secured to the said head block and arm, a main perch provided with a tongue which projects through the holes in the head block and is secured to the front part of the upper circle, a perch bar having its front end portion secured between the said perch and arm, a lower circle supporting the upper circle, an axle secured to the lower circle, and a king bolt operativcly connecting the upper and lower circles.
2. In a running gear, the combination, with a hollow head block having holes through its sides, and a cover plate connected to the lower side of the head block and provided with a rearwardly projecting arm; of the upper circle of a fifth wheel secured to the said head block and arm, a
