'ILAIIz-FOOT FOR LATE-ES.
Specification of Letters `.Fe/tent.
Paten-tediN-ov. 18., 19113 To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BYRON D. JACKSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing atV Y the claims.
In forming a tail-foot for grinding niachines and similar articles it is necessary to hold the spindle carrying the cent-er with great rigidity so that great accuracy may he had in the performance of the machine.
The object of the present invention is to improve a tail-foot in this particular. Y
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure l shows a plan view of a tail-foot. Fig. 2 is an end View partly inseotion on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1.
l marks the lathe center, 2 the work carried by the center, and 3 the spindle carrying the center. The spindle is carried in a bearing 4 arranged in the tail-foot block 4, The bearing 4 is split longitudinally for a distance back from the end of the bearing spindle, this separation being indicated at 6. In Order to give the part of the bearing thus separated a uniform gripping surface throughout a suiiicient length to assure the alinement of the spindle, the hearing is cut `transversely at 7 so that the forwardpart of the bearing will he free to spring the clamp and spindle. Lugs 8 extend upwardly from the hearing 4 along the lines of separation 6. These lugs form a dove-tail and have the wedge surfaces 9, the wedge eX- tending in a longitudinal direction. A clamping plate 10 extends over the lugs 8 and has the downwardly extending lips 10a, the inner surfaces of Which correspond to the surfaces 9 of the lug 8. A lever 1l is pivotally mounted on the bearing 4 by a pin 12 and is connectedwith the plate 10 by means of the pin 18.
The spindle is moved loy any desired mechanism, the,` hand wheel 5 being arranged for this purpose, and when the center is properly adjusted' in theV work the lever 11 is operated forcing the plate 10 forward. The wedge surfaces on the inner edge o-f the lips l0a engaging the wedge surfaces 9 force the free side of the bearing 4 into engagement with the spindle, thus securely clamping the spindle in accurate alincinent with the surfaceV of the hearing. The frictional engagement with the wedge surfaces is suflicient to hold the clamping plate in position during the operation on the work. At the completion of the operation the lever 11 is swung to free the plate and the center can then be withdrawn by the operation of the hand wheel on the spindle in the usual manner.
What I claim as new is l. In a tail-foot for lathes, the coinbinaf tion of a spindle; a spindle carrying hearing split longitudinally and having lugs alo-iig the line of separation, said lugs form# ing a longitudinally extending wedge; a clamp plate arranged over the lugs having wedge surfaces engaging the wedge surfaces on the lugs; means for forcing the clamp plate longitudinally; and means for moving A the spindle longitudinally.
2. In a tail-foot for lathes, the combination of a spindle; a spindle carrying bearaoKV ing split longitudinally and having dovetail lugs along the line of separation, `said dove-tail lugs forming a longitudinally eX- tending wedge; a clamp plate arranged over the lugs having wedge surfaces engaging the wedge surfaces on the lugs; means for forcing the clamp plate longitudinally; and means forV moving the spindle longitudinally;
3. In a tail-foot for lathes, the co1nbination of a spindle; a spindle carrying bearing split longitudinally and having lugs along the line of separation; said lugs forining a longitudinally extending wedge; a clamp plate arranged over the lugs having wedge surfaces engaging the wedge surfaces on the lugs; and a lever pivotally mounted on the spindle carrying bearing for operating the clamp plate.
4. In a tail-foot for lathes, the combination of a spindle; a spindle carrying beary ing split longitudinally through a part of its surface and having a transverse slot ex tending from the longitudinal separation, said bearing being provided with lugs extending along the line of separation, said lugs forming a longitudinally extending my hand in the presence of two subscribing Wedge; a clamp plate arranged over the lugs Witnesses.
having Wedge surfaces envaofino the Wedge surfaces on the lugs; meartis Z:forbo-rcing the BYRON D JACKSON' 5 clamp platelongitudinally; and means for Witnesses:
moving the spindle longitudinally. B. M. HARTMAN,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set H. C. LORD.
