MACHINE FOR APPLYING CLOSURES TO RECEPTACLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OLOF N. TEVANDER and Autumn MANJERRE, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Applying Closures to Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact descriptlon, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Cur invention relates to apparatus for forming or shaping closures and applying the same to receptacles and has for its object the provision of'a unitary mechanism for performing these functions.
In the preferred embodiment of our invention we include in the unitary mechanism means whereby sheets that are to constitute the closures are cut from blank sheets, and, where the closures are to be provided with skirted portioi s, the unitary mechanism also includes means whereby the marginal portions of the sheets are formed into skirts. The unitary mechanism also preferably includes means for effecting tight engagement of the closures with the receptacles by means of tightening members or devices. While the unitary mechanism of our invention desirably includes all of the characteristics before described, we do not wish to be limited to these characteristics as one or more of them may be omitted Without departing from certain features of the invention.
The product herein disclosed forms the subject matter of a co-pending application Serial No. 566,580, filed June 13, 1910.
We will explain our invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred embodiment thereof, and in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation showing a form of our machine, the receptacle to which a closure is to be applied being illustrated in one position; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the parts differently related as a consequence of a step in the operation of the machine; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detailview of the structure shown in Fig. 3, the parts being illustrated in different relation as aconsequence of another step in the operation of the machine.

As the invention is embodied we employ a lower stationary die 1 and an upper die 2 that is caused to move toward and from the lower die by any suitable mechanism, guidmg pins 3 being employed for maintaining the dies in alinement. he lower die is provided with an annular cutting edge 4 and the upper die is provided with an'annula-r cutting edge 5, these cutting edges cooperating to cut sheet sections out of blank sheet (3 which is fed between the dies, the cutting occurring when the upper die is lowered, as will be understood from the drawing. Both dies are provided with faces parallel with the sheet that is cut from the blank sheet and which is interposed between these faces, these faces being brought to bear upon the sheet interposed therebetween with just sufficient firmness properly to guide the marginal portions of the sheet when the inner portion thereof is engaged, the parts of the dies that engage the cut sheet interposed therebetween thus constituting pressing members for pressing the marginal portions of the sheets. After the dies have been brought into pressing relation with the sheet interposed therebetveen, the table 7 is elevated by mechanism which need not be illustrated to cause the receptacle 9 to which pressure is to be applied to press upwardly against the inner portion of the sheet so as to elevate this inner portion of the sheet to draw the marginal portions of the sheet from between the pressing members, thereby to form such marginal portion into a skirt.
The particular form of receptacle shown is a milk bottle provided with a bead 10 at the upper end of its neck. This bead 1O acts upon the inner portion of the sheet in a manner which has been described, and in order that this operation may occur the dies are provided with alined ameter that will be sufficient to permit of the passage of the bead 10 therethrough while the skirted portion of the closure surrounds the bead. The receptacle 9 is illus trated at the upper limit of its movement in Fig. 2 where the lower margin of the bead 10 is brought into the same plane with four jaws 11 that project through openings loeated at the bottom of a magazine 12. This magazine is designed to hold fastening openings of a dirings, bands or members 13 that are pro most. ring is in the same plane with the jaws 11 in order to be in position to be engaged by the jaws when they are actuated for the purpose of fastening this ring about the skirted closure and the neck of the bottle at a place beneath the bead 10, these jaws 11 serving, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, to inset. and gather the skirted portion into folds and press them against the receptacle and to crimp the ring as indicated in Fig. t, though it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the crimping of the rings nor the folding of the skirt of the closure in the manner and by the means illustrated.
The mechanism for actuating the jaws 11 may be of any suitable form. lVe have shown one form wherein the jaws are actuated by va cam ring 15 provided with cam slots 16 through which pins 17 mounted upon the jaws pass. By grasping the handle 18 the ring 15 may be rotated in a direction to cause the jaws to approach the axis of the bottle to kink the lowermost ring 13 and gather the skirt of the closure in a manner which has just been described-and which is illustrated in Figs. 2 and t.
A stop 19 is movably connected with the upper end of the magazine 12 for the purpose of limiting the extent to which the receptacle 9 may be elevated. The table 7 may be provided with a cushion of rubber -20 to constitute a seat for the bottles 9 so that, in the event of inequality in the heights of the bottles, the seat therefor will yield when the bottles are pressed against the stop 19 in the case of bottles exceeding a minimum height. Stops 21 are provided to limit the extent to which the table 7 maybe elevated.
In some of the claims we speak of means for effecting pressure between the inner portions of the sheets and the receptacles, the term inner portions being used as distinguished from the term marginal portions.
While we have herein shown and particularly described one embodiment of our invention, we do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown, as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of our invention, but
Having thus described our invention we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
1. A closure applying machine including a receptacle support and stop relatively movable toward and from each other, there be ing means for forming the edge portion of a closure sheet, when interposed between the receptacle and stop, into a skirt upon the mutual approach of the receptacle support and stop; a fastening ring support for hold- ,ing a fastening ring in position to enable the skirt of the closure and the portion of the receptacle surrounded thereby to enter and be surrounded by the fastening ring; and jaws relatively movable in the plane of the ring for fastening the same and the skirt of the closure surrounded by the ring against the receptacle.
2. A closure applying machine including a receptacle support and a fastening ring support relatively movable toward and from each other, there being means for forming the edge portion of a closure sheet, when interposed between the receptacle and fastening ring support, into a skirt upon the mutual approach of the receptacle support and fastening ring support, whereby the skirted portion of the closure is passed into the ring held by the ring support; and jaws relatively movable in the plane of the ring for fastening the same and the skirt of the closure surrounded by the ring against the receptacle.
3. A closure applying machine including a receptacle support and support relatively movable toward and from each other, whereby the skirted portion of a skirted closure'which has been applied to the receptacle may enter a fastening ring held by said ring support; and jaws relatively movable in the plane of the ring for fastening the same and the skirt of the closure surrounded by the ring against the receptacle.
4. A closure applying machine including a receptacle support and stop relatively movable toward and from each other, there being means for forming the edge portion of a closure sheet, when interposed between the receptacle and stop, into a skirt upon the mutual approach of the receptacle support and stop; a fastening ring support for bold ing a fastening ring in position to enable the skirt of the closure and the portion of the receptacle surrounded thereby to enter and be surrounded b the fastening ring; and means for pressing the fastening ring an the skirt of the closure surrounded thereby into engagement with the portion of the receptacle surrounded by the closure skirt and fastening ring.
5. A closure applying machine including a receptacle support and a fastening ring support relatively movable toward and from each other, there being means for forming the edge portion of a closure sheet, when interposed between the receptacle and fastening ring support, into a skirt upon the mutual approach of the receptacle support and fastening ring support, whereby the skirted portion of the closure is passed into the ring held by the ring support; and means for pressing the fastening ring and a fastening ring D the skirt of the closure surrounded thereby into engagement with the portion of the receptacle surrounded by the closure skirt and fastening ring.
6. A closure applying machine including a receptacle support and a fastening ring support relatively movable toward and from each other, whereby the skirted portion of a skirted closure which has been applied to the receptacle may enter a fastening ring held by said ring support; and means for pressing the fastening ring and the skirt of rounded by the closure skirt and fastening 15 ring.
