To all whom it mag concern *Be itknown that I, HENRY W. CLnMnNT, a citizen of the United States. residing at Rutland,' county of Butland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Im proved Transfer Mechanism for Calculating-Machines, of which the following. is a specification. v
This invention relates to a novel mechanism' for transmitting the tens, hundreds,
etc, in calculating machines. This transmission is generally eifected by temporarily bringing a transfer finger into engagement with a toothed wheel which is advanced for one tooth during each rotation of said finger.
The resent invention comprises novel means or so actuating said finger that it requires for its operation but a minimum expenditure of power and that an accidental displacement of the finger-carrying sleeve from the position to which it has been set, is effectively prevented.

For each igitdial 10, there is provided in the machine frame 11, a squared shaft 12 carrying a toothed sector 13 having a mum ber of teeth 14 that gradually decrease in length. Shaft 12 is rotated through spindle 15 and miter wheels 16, while it in turn transmits its movement to a pinion 17 shown to be slidable on a squared shaft 18. Upon the latter is reciprocably mounted a sleeve 19 carrying a pair of beveled gear wheels 20, either one of which is adapted to engage a similar wheel 21. The latter is keyed to the spindle 22 of the registering dial 10 that displays its numbers through a window 23 handle 27 of a carriage 24. Intermediate wheels 20 is arranged a shipping bar 26 operated from through a lever and link connection 28. whereby the machine may be set either for addition and multiplication or for subtraction and division. Shaft 18 carries a relatively fixed toothed wheel 29and a.

Whenever tappet 33 engages trigger 3d, the latter is so tilted by lever to move shipping bar 36 to the right (Figs. 1 and 2) which movement. is transmitted to hub 39 and barrel 31 by arm 37. In this way, finger 32 is brought into alinement with toothed wheel 29, so that upon the rotationof the finger, said wheel will be advanced for one tooth. F or subsequently returning the hub and barrel to their original position, the former is provided with a helical cam 40 adapted to engage a fixed abutment 41.
In order to facilitate the reading of the several dials, etc, it is preferred to mount the mechanism described on a slant as illustrated in Fig. 1. The mutual arrangement ofthe parts is such that when finger 32 has been shifted into its operative position, roller 4L4 engages groove 42 and thus prevent-s an accidental axial displacement of hub 39, finger and barrel 31, until the finger had been in operative engagement with toothed wheel 39 and had thus performed its work. Groove 42 messes gradually merges into the circumference of hub 39 as at 4:8 after engagement between t 1e parts 8:2, 29 has taken place, so that roller 44 will be. gradually lifted out of the groove and will engage the cylindrical surface of hub 39, so that cam l0 is free to shift the hub together with the parts carried thereby, back to their original position. l enever tappet 33 causes a movement of hub 39 to the right (Fig. 1) its grooved section is again axially alined with roller 44, so that the spring l? will assist the trigger in its work and thus reduce the power necessary for the peration of the machine. This is due to the fact that as soon as roller 44 enters groove 42 the spring-influenced engagement of the slanting groove and roller faces will effect a shifting of the hub toward the right.

In a device of the character described, a spring-influenced retaining member having a chamfered end, an inclined rotatable shaft, a hub slidable thereon and carrying a transfer finger, said hub being provided with a cylindrical section and with a circumferential groove having an inclined. side wall and gradually merging into said cylindrical section, means for shifting the hub on the shaft to its lowern'iost position, the weight of the hub causing the latter to re tain such lowermost position whereby th cylindrical hub section is maintained in en gagement with the retaining member, and means for raising the hub on the shaft against its weight to bring the grooved huh section into engagement with the retaining member, the engagement between the cham fercd end of said member and the inel "l grooveavall assisting the raising means the movement of the hub.
