Beit known thatl, PETER Katrina, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, in thecountyof Cook and State of lllinois, have invented a newV and useful Improvement in Gas-Regulators, of which tlie following is a specification. p
My invention relates to devices for regulating the flow of illuminating gas.
The object :thereof is to provide a simple, cheap and eective check or regulator for use in connection with gas burners df any kind, whereby the pressure lof gas in the service pipe may be'mbtlili'ed so that when delivered at the burner tip the gas pressure is uniform and lowered tothe point of eco-` y 1 1 y lber within the cup which will normally rest transversely of the shell 11' and partially n omical and effective consumption.
rThe principles of my invention are illustrated in the drawings, in whichlfigures 1 and 2 Vshow sectional views of my improved regulator, having different style-s of burners mounted thereon; Fig. 3 1s an enlarged vertical section shown in perspective; Fig. 4 is a cross section of Fig. 3 on the line 4*@ Fig. 5 is a slightly modified form of the device.
Further describing my invention with reference to the drawings, in which like characters of reference denote like parts throughout: 1 and l represent the pillars of different types of burners, provided with nonfusible tips and having their lower portions screw-threaded for attachment to an ordinary gas bracket.

pressed snugly in place thereagainst. This is not, however, necessary and the screens may be of very coarse mesh. A partition piece 7 provided with a multiplicity of regularly disposed openings is placed within the said dome and spaced therefrom, leaving a chamber through which the gas passes. Sai d chamber forms a receptacle which is filled with finely cut steel or other metallic shavings. These act as a check for the gas passing through it as further described below. This will be `the normal position under the influence of gravity when the gas is not turned on. As soon as the flow begins upwardly through the opening 13 the float will be lifted, permitting the gas to flow out of' opening 13 into the float and thence around the walls `15 and upwardly through the openings 8 5l` but any eX- cess of `pressure above that required for economical consumption will raise `the float until the portion 1G is in contact with the partition 7, whereby theopcnings 8 will be obstructed, except where they are coincident with `the depression 17. A `uniform resistance or` check is provided in the space or chamber between screen 6 and partition 7. rllhis l pack with finely cut shavings of steel vor other elastic metal, though l: prefer the former as I have found it to be peculiarly fitted for this purpose. `Being cut from solid steel and by a process which curls the shavings or fibers, the said material is highly elastic and capable by greater' or less compression of giving such definite resistance to the gas current as desired. This elasticity is not lost nor is the material otherwise deteriorated by age or by the extreme heat to which it is subjected and by which all other materials, usually fibrous and oil. organic origin when similarly used, are injured or destroyed. And when placed in proper quantity between the dome of my device and the foraminous partition 7 or 7 it forms a fixed and definite check against too rapid flow of gas. lt coperates most efliciently'with the valve 16, and I thereby obtain a continuous, uniform low pressure flow of gas and produce a soft, clear and brilliant light at a less cost than when gas is burned under ordinary conditions.
I claim:
l. In a gas check, a casing, an upwardly tapered shell having an opening in the apex thereof within the said casing, a foraminous partition placed transversely within said casing above said shell to form a valve chamber and an inverted cup-shaped float in said chamber placed over said shell and having a Hat top with an internal depending member to ride on the apex of said shell and close said opening. n
2. In a gas check, a casing, an upwardly tapered shell having an opening in the apex thereof within the said casing, a foraminous partition placed transversely within said casing to form a valve chamber and an inverted cup-shaped float in said chamber placed over said shell and having a depression in the top forming an internal depending member to ride on the apex of said shell and close said opening.
3. In a gas pressure regulator; the combination with a hollow casino, having an outlet opening in the head of a Jtransverse foraminous partition forming a retaining chamber below said head, a packing for said chamber of steel or other metallic shavinUs, an upwardly tapered shell having an opening in the apex there-of secured in the lower part of said casing to form a valve chamber below said partition, and an inverted cupshaped ioat placed over said shell and having a substantially flat top and an internally depending member to ride on the apex of said tapered shell and obstruct the opening thereof.
