Referring now more' particularly to the drawings, the reference numeral 10 designates generally a :frame member forthe device. Thisfra'ne'lO is shown jmoreelearly f in Fig.*6,'in whichA the side'portions 11 are bent downwardly Vv ,nd'p'rovided 'with alined openingsz 12. Mounted in .the alined openings '.16 and `are shafts 25; These shafts are preferably provided with a conical opening 26 at each' side of the'shaft, vinto which thereiextends a conical tip 2.7=of a threaded screw pin 28. These'pins 28 are preferably threaded in the openings 1'6 and 17, and are each pro-' vided with a lock nut 29 to securethe vsereni pin .in position. Each shaft is rovided .with
a ring secured to it, or a shoul er 30 formed..
integral therewith adjacent the one end, and.'i
upon this end a plurality of grinding Wheels 31 are disposed, suitably lspaced apart by blocks 32 and retained in position upon the shaft by Ameans lof al lock nut 33.- The vshaft-s 25 are spaced apart, .the distance apart being vless than the diameter of one of-the grinding wheels 31,"so that -When the grind?? ing wheels are '1n position upon the shafts the contiguous edges ofthe wheels upon one shaft extend beyond the edges of the wheels mounted upon the other shaft; This necesf sita-tes thexs'pmringl apart j of. the grinding wheels, so that the edge of -o ne whee1 p'ojects -betweenthe edges vof two otherl wheels mounted upon the other shaft.:
To rotate the shafts 25, wormy gears 34 aremounted upon the shafts, preferably adjacent the end opposite to that'at vvihich the' grinding wheelsjfage located, and mhing with the gears liich are mounted upon the shaft/'21.
. v 11K- Will be evident that the direction of rotation: of one of the shafts'` will be opposite to that of the other shaft,
and that itwill bc impossible to rotatethe .wheels is retained`in upright position by Jfrom falling upon means of these guides. Y
To prevent the grindings from'the wheels' the gears 24, a shield 35- is providedfvvhich is secured to the frame .10 adjacent its horizontal portion and extends upwardly over the gears 24 below the. shafts A25. This -shield prevents "the 'g'ri'dingsfrom entering the teeth of ihe gears 24 and thereby causing thein to LWear unduly.
The upwardly extendingpdrtion 15 otthe frame is preferably formedwith a grooved portion 36,"inorde1;`to give it.- additional rigidity, and to the upper end of this portion 15 there is secured a shield 37, which extends over the gears 24, mounted upon the -shafts 25, and in closeproximity to the. grinding wheels mounted upon the shafts. The object of .this shield is Atofprotect the operator `from .the gears' 34, and to prevent the grindings from coming in contactwith the said Wheels. The-shield 37 also provides a4 supporting surface for an L shaped clip 38, which may' be secured to. the portion. 15 hy nieansxof a screw 39., which also secures the shield 3'(v to. the portion 15. Atthe., otherside of--theframe and' carried by :the upwardlyextc'ndin'g.portion 14 is a clip 40. Thcsefclips 38 and 40 'are preferablyfcomposed of a. softer'inaterialthan the material of which the. frame is constructed, so that it the sharpened cdgeof a knife or other article comes in contact with the clip the edge will not he injured thereby. The clips are in alinement with the guidcway formed by the guides 19.
