To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JuLrUs Donnn'rn, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Line Setting and Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in line setting and casting machines, and more particularly in machines of the typograph type in which matrix bars are provided each of which is formed with a matrix representing a certain type, and which are adapted to be assembled into a line and after casting to be distributed again by sliding with eye portions along wires or similar guide ways from which they are suspended.
The object of the improvements is to provide simple and convenient means for reinoving the matrix bars from the wires and substituting other matrix bars in lieuthereof.
With this object in view my invention consists in forming the guide ways or wires with downwardlydirected bent portions which permit the matrix bars to be removed from the wires or guide ways onto a supporting frame, whlch bent portions pass through the openings provided at the lower ends of the eyes. In the preferred form the bent portions of the wires are provided be low the part of the wire frame to which the wires are attached at their rear ends and in this case they are bent laterally and upward again and to the rear part of the frame to which they are secured. Thereby I am enabled to place the frame on which the matrix bars are to be gathered at the rear of the frame and at a part of the machine where it does not interfere with the operation of the machine.
In order that my invention be more clearly understood, an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompany-- ing drawing, in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts.
In said drawing-Figure 1, is a diagrammatical plan view of the frame to which the wires or guide ways for the matrix bars are secured. Fig. 2, is a side view showing on a larger scale the ends of the wires in the distributing position of the matrix basket, Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the rear part of the wire basket with a frame for interchanging the matrices 7 attached connecting the guiding wires to the matrix frame, and Fig. l, is a detail view showing the manner in which a matrix bar is passed with its upper eye portion from the guiding wlres to the interchanging frame.
In the example shown in the accompanyin drawing the line setting and casting machine is equipped with a matrix frame (Z which is adapted to be rocked for bringing the matrices m mounted thereon into assembling or into distributing position. As shown a. plurality of guide wires a are connected with their rear ends to the frame, and in the distributed position the matrices m are suspended from the said wires near the rear part of the matrix frame, and when being distributed they are prevented from passing beyond their end positions by a suitable frame a. For interchanging the matrices an interchanging frame 0 is provided which is adapted to be attached to the frame a, and which in the example shown in the drawing consists of two sections 0 and 0. Each of the said sections is provided with wires f the number and position of which corresponds to the number and position of theguide wires a. The frame sectionsc and c are provided with arms Z which are formed with bent ends by means of which the can be attached to the frame at. For holc ing the arms Z in position thumb nuts 70 are provided.
At their rear ends and below the rear part of the frame cl each of the guide wires is formed with a bent portion which consists of a section a which is directed downward from the straight or main portion of the wires and a section b which is bent upward from the section a and laterally thereof and which is secured to the frame d. As is best shown in Fig. 4:, the matrix bars on have the ordinary construction, and they are formed at their upper ends with eyes m by means of which they are suspended fromthe wires a. At their lower ends the eyes at" are open, and the width of the said openings is smaller than the diameter of the guide wires, as is known in the art. The sections a of the bend ofthe wires a are formed each with areduced or flattened part the thickness of which is less than the width of the opening of the eye m.
The location of the wires f on the interchanging frame 0 may be such, that the wires f are in alinement with the guide wires a when the frame 0 has been attached to the frame (Z, or it may be such, that the said wires are disposed at an angle to the wires a, as has been indicated in Fig. 3.
If it is desired to remove one set of matrix bars from the wires a, the frame a is attached thereto by means of its arms Z and the thumb nuts It in such a position, that the wires f are in contactattheir outer ends with, the wires a atthe first bend of the same. If new the frame 6 is removed, (the matrix basket being in distributing position), the matrices slide downward on their wires and toward the wires f. tl hen arriving at the bent portions of the wires a the matrix bars slide away from the wires a and on the wires f, the outer branches of the eyes passing between the sections a and 5 and the openings of the eyes in, crossing the duced portions of the sections (4. After the matrix bars have thus been gathered on the interchanging frame 0 the latter is removed from the frame (Z by loosening the thumb nuts it". After one set of matrix bars has been removed from the machine, and itis desired to bring another set thereon, a frame 0 carrying the said set is secured to the frame (Z while the latter is in distributing position, whereupon the matrix bars are shifted on the wires a.
The advantage of supporting the ends of the matrix-carrying wires (4 in a frame above the main portions of said wires is manifest. By carrying the wires upwardly to the frame 03' the interchanging frame may be readily brought to position with the delivery ends of the wires f against the discharging and receiving end of the wires (6 and the matrices may then be readily passed from wires f to wires (0 without any preliminary separation of the suspended lines of matrices. The matrices in the various lines, should they swing laterally out of proper position, will automatically assume their proper alinement as they pass onto the wires a.
While in describing the invention reference has been made to an embodiment thereof which in my opinion serves the purpose best, I wish it to be understood, that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawing, and that various changes may be made within the gist of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a line setting and casting machine, the combination with the matrix bars having open eyes for suspension of the same, of elongated guide members adapted to have the matrix bars with their eyes suspended. therefrom and each having a downwardly bent portion, and an upwardly extending portion, a supporting means for the up wardly bent ends of the guide members, and an interchanging frame comprising a plurality of elongated matrix carriers and adapted to be brought with the matrix carriers in engagement with the bent portions of the guide members and into positions for receiving the matrix bars therefrom.

In a line setting and casting machine, the combinationwith the matrix bars having open eyes for suspension of the same, of a frame comprising elongated guide members adapted to have the matrix bars with their eyes suspended therefrom and each having a downwardly bent portion located below the rear end of the frame and bent laterally and upward again to the rear end of the frame and supported above the main portions of the guide members, and an interchanging frame adapted to be mounted at the rear of the frame carrying the guide members and comprising a plurality of elongated matrix carriers and adapted to be brought with the matrix carriers in engagement with the bent portions of the guide members and into positions for receiving the matrix bars therefrom.
l. in a line setting and casting machine, the combination with the matrix bars having open eyes for suspension of the same, of elongated guide members adapted to have the matrix bars with their eyes suspended therefrom and each having a downwardly bent portion reduced in thickness to correspond to the openings of the eyes of the matrix bars, said guide members being then bent laterally and upwardly, a support for the upper ends of said guide members above the main portions of said members, and an interchanging frame comprising a plurality of elongated matrix carriers and adapted to be brought with the matrix carriers in engagement with the bent portions of the guide members and into positions for receiving the matrix bars there hom.
5. In a line setting and castin machine, the combination with the matrixbars having open eyes for suspension of the same, of a frame comprising elongated guide members adapted to have the matrix bars with their eyes suspended therefrom and each having a downwardly bent portion reduced in thickness to correspond to the openings of the eyes of the matrix bars, and located below the rear end of the trame'and bent laterally and upward again at a point below the reduced portion to the rear end of the frame, a support for said upwardly extend-- ing ends of the guide members above the main portions of said members, and an interchanging frame adapted to be mounted at the rear otthe frame carrying the guide members and comprising a plurality of elongated matrix carriers and adapted to be brought with thematrix carriers in engagement with the bent portions of the guide members and into positions for receiving the matrix bars therefrom.
6. In a line setting and casting machine,
the combination with the matrix bars having open eyes tor suspension of the same, of elongated gulde members adapted to have the matrix bars with their eyes suspended therefrom and each havmg a downwardly bent portion and an upwardly extending carriers and adapted to be brought with the matrix carriers in engagement with the bent portions of the guide members and into positions for receiving the matrix bars therefrom, and removable means to hold the matrix bars away from the bent portions of the guide'members.
